I was having lots of lag, drop in connection etc. I wired my ps5 instead of WiFi and the portal now works perfectly well. Edit, I should mention I hard wired my ps5 to a mesh device in my living room that’s not hardwired to the router and it still worked. Not sure how but it made a huge difference. I was getting 90mps wireless with the ps5 which in its own rite should be ample but it was terrible. I hardwired the ps5 to the mesh, my speed increased to 250mps and I’ve very very little lag now. Played the portal last night for about 3 hours, was a great experience
I left my ps5 in Colombia and now I'm playing from a hotel in Argentina. Works pretty well for solo games but for competitive games like COD it is not that well because there is some input lag that affects the aiming part
Just purchased one and really struggling. I get great video quality but tonnes of input lag or sometimes if I press the dpad, its over responding like I've pressed it 5 times. Any ideas?
Pretty awesome that Sony recognizes all the work you've done to show how great if a product the Portal can be. Definitely convinced me to give it a to. Look forward to vampire survivors as I watch some evening sports.
I appreciate your kind words, but I actually think this is how Sony deals with all returns. It seems like they verify that the issue exists, then ship out a new Portal and send the old one to be repaired and sold as a refurbished unit. I don't think I've seen anyone that's gotten their original device back (afaik). Still, gotta love Vampire Survivors, such a great game ❤️
I love these videos and that you’re starting a discord channel. It’s so great to have a fellow PS Portal enthusiast making helpful content like this. One additional thing that has been helpful for my portal, as well as overall network, has been a scheduled router reboot. For a while, my portal was getting bogged down and super laggy. After a reboot, that was taken care of, so now I have it done weekly. The slightly obnoxious thing is that I have to re-optimize the 5G network frequently as it always defaults to the same, more congested channel.
That's an odd problem with your 5GHz frequency, I wonder if that's a bug in the firmware? Are there any updates available for for the router? Appreciate the kind words though my friend :)
I'm where you are. Ordered one just because nothing else was available after a lengthy wait on PS direct the day of the anniversary launch. I'm now thinking of selling it or holding on to it for potential higher resale value down the road.
Nooooo !!! Don’t cancel it. These are going to be very rare. I returned my portal but you need to keep the 30th anniversary one. They only made a certain number of the 30th anniversary portals, ps5s, and ps5 pros
It doesn't absolutely need to be, it will work if both are connected via WiFi. If you're experiencing any kind of poor performance on the Portal, then the first thing to do is to hardwire the console into the router. It solves a lot of network performance issues and doesn't require any fiddling with settings and such :)
Thanks for your video, very helpful, but now that you can stream the ps premieum games, can you have the same problem in this video (with lag and bad quality image) even if your connection is good ?
Well, it kinda depends a bit on how the network is configured and how the console is connected. After all, the network traffic is still being passed through the same equipment. Let's say that your console and Portal are both connected via WiFi... In that scenario, you might well see an improvement in quality.
@ ok Thanks, so my wifi is really good on my ps5 it may lag and have a bad quality image on my portal because of the stability, but I could have no problem in streaming ps plus games in my portal ?
Absolutely! I've done a bunch of testing, just need to get some more done on mobile data today. Hoping to have something out in the by tonight :) so far, so good! It seems like the best update yet.
It sounds like you need to configure your router to accept the incoming connection with port forwarding. Before you do that though, check that your isp isn't using something called CGNAT.
If you're streaming from the cloud there isn't much difference with the troubleshooting steps. The traffic still has to go between the portal and your router, then out to the internet and back in again. So you'd need to see if the problem lies with your internet connection or whether it's a local issue on your wifi. If your internet speeds are fast and stable, then it's most likely the quality of the wifi connection, in which case all of the steps in the video are the same :)
Great video! These have helped me immensely after purchasing a Portal. I have a question about channel width. I'm using WiFiman & at home it shows I'm connected to 5ghz 80mhz & performance is excellent. When i go to my GF's house it connects to 5ghz 160mhz & the picture quality is reduced as is performance . Is 160mhz sub optimal for Portal & should i consider moving to a channel with lower width. If so , how do i do this? Forgot to add, signal & latency shown on WiFiman are both excellent at both locations & very stable. Cheers
I'm so glad you found it helpful. With regards to your question (which is excellent by the way). WiFi channel widths are a bit of a balancing act; a 20Mhz channel will offer the greatest stability, but at the cost of network speed. On the flip side, 160MHz will offer the greatest speeds, but at the cost of interference (and potentially stability). I've had the most success at 80 and 40MHz personally, but that's taking into account where I live and what surrounds me. Since your GF's network is running at 160MHz, I'd see about knocking that down to 80 and see how you get on. You'll need to log into the router at her house and look through the settings within the WiFi section of the router. It's a bit difficult to be more specific than that without knowing what the router is. But any decent router should give you the option to change the channel settings, including the width.
@@TheGameFatherUK That's great, thank you! Performance is perfectly playable here but it just looks like the resolution is dropped considerably from what it is at home. I'd imagine that it's not so much a change on the Portal, but an environmental change with the network. If there haven't been any changes at home (baby monitors, doorbells, microwaves, changes to network hardware or the building), then could something have changed with a neighbour? Either way, the same tests apply, if you can get a stable low latency, you should be fine.

Cool. You tell us your home network is.....a crap. My friends and i have no problem at all with portal. Yes we are wired, but not just for portal, but for all connexions ! Tv, firestick, console,etc... I think even with wifi, we'll not have problems.
I'd say that at least 90% of the problems that folk run into with their Portal (or any remote play device) is because their home WiFi isn't up to scratch. This video shows how to test for that and how to sort it. Wired connections are always more reliable than wireless, but you can have a decent setup with WiFi with good equipment and the correct environment.. My portal has been excellent since day 1, no problems here. But that's not been the case for a lot of people. The issue is that there isn't really any actual support for those people so they just end up thinking "my internet connection is awesome, so it must be this piece of shit Portal", when in actual fact, they've just not understood the problem fully.
I have wired connection to ps5 and good internet and a very good router. Ps5 streaming to my oled steam deck, Odin 2 pro, iPad Pro,and Lenovo y700 are all better than the portal. And they all use WiFi 6 or better. Now if I had never played on anything but the portal then maybe I would have kept it. Because I wouldn’t have ever noticed the difference. Portal is fine but it could have been a lot better with WiFi 6 or higher.
I agree that it would have benefited from being WiFi 6, but I certainly don't agree about it being a waste of money. When your network is setup well, it's fantastic.
Yeah maybe not a waste of money. That may have been too harsh. I was just very disappointed because most my devices are WiFi 6 or 7. The few devices I use to stream also have screens with high refresh rate. I could just tell a major difference between those and the portal. But at 199$ I guess I should have figured that in. Wish it worked better for me because the ergonomics and size were perfect. Just bummed 🫤
Portal sucks, it just does. If people just stopped buying it PlayStation might actually fix it, or release an updated model. Anyway, my iPhone streams better for now.
Sony released a massive update last week that fixed the micro-stutter, added direct cloud streaming and a few other bits. It's a great device and has been very successful since launch. It's not everyone's cup of tea, granted, but most of its criticisms usually come down to poor home network performance.

Appreciate the kind words about the videos my friend 🫡 and shhhh, best keep that £200 price ticket on the down low, last thing we need is a £600 version 😅
@@TheGameFatherUK they must've seen my message. I do like the limited edition version but i'm a weirdo who likes to match and the standard white one would suit me fine i think...
It's ok. The limited edition will be 499.99. The colour change isn't cheap y'know! (I really hope i'm wrong!)
Playing a portal and your tv is in front of you is wild 💀
Only for testing my dude :) unless the TV is already in use by the kids/wife, in which case the Portal is a life saver.
Diabolical….I only use my PSP during Football season…watching Football and playing the Portal at the same time
Ps portal uses WiFi 5 in 2024 immediate fail on Sony’s part regardless of what you do. Waste of money immediately returned mine.
@@TheGameFatherUK that person is the type of person that keeps cable technicians with a job lol
Now cloud gaming is out and it’s perfect!!
Fr. Imagine my disappointment when I connected it to my wifi7 router.
