Thank you. Disassembly was too fast though. I did this project with the AKSpeedo kit (ribbon and LCD). Just uses tape across the terminal on the board and a pressure pad that self sticks over that. Worked out perfect.

Nice. I did this with the pixel fix silver non bond ribbon about a year and a half ago. kinda a pain but still working great.
Well worth the pain =) You should replace the bulbs too,

Thanks, wish it was 100% but screen is at least readable now. Bulbs may be next if I can get my hands on the car again. Thanks for watching!

Reason they don't show disassembly is glass is very vulnerable and easily broken where the ribbon attaches. Best to remove glass before pulling ribbon off. .

Nice video & helpful as I need to do this on my Saab too. Just one suggestion for others who view, it's better to use a thin bladed tool, such as a spatula or similar, to remove the unit, as a screwdriver can mark the surround or the unit if it presses in too far.

I've just done mine with an Lcd screen kit and T bar iron.
As I've worked in electronics for over 40 years this seemed like it ought to have been pretty easy and straight forward repair.
But despite cleaning the pcb absolutely spotless and preping the contacts again with IPA before attaching the cable the clock had missing pixels when I put it back in the car 😡😡which is worse than I started with. As mine worked ok when you first turned it on but as the car warmed up all the pixels started to disappear.
After checking it (my work) under magnification there's nothing wrong with what I did so it's likely that the LCD wasn't bonded properly at the factory. The trouble is it's chinese rubbish, and I've had it too long before fitting it to get my money back. Plus the fact you'll destroy the ribbon when you remove it the seller will then claim it was my fault . Lucky I saved the old LCD so I've just ordered another cable and I'll refit that which is a bit of a pita as the display was £20-30 and a cable is £5. So I spent more so that so I didn't need to bond the cable to the glass. Making it easier and less potential for failure as you're only reworking one end.
I did my climate control with similar kit years ago and its still perfect
What Might do before remove the new faulty lcd is power it up on the bench and try to apply pressue to see where it's actually failed. And also inspect the cable incase any of the tracks a broken. But on the whole I wish I'd had just bought the cheap cable in the 1st place rather than a new LCD thats doesn't work correctly. Pure laziness on my part. I basically trust my work so had I do both ends it would have worked.

Weird thing but my 9-3 has a sid 2 but the cable looks like similar to your sid 1 unit cable. I purchsed a sid 2 cable which looks like the other one you purchased first and it's wrong so open your sid unit and identify your cable type before ordering.

Do you think that placing some tape to either side of the display ribbon before you remove it to allow for alignment would work?

I like how the flex cable just disappears from the PCB and display then we get to watch you clean for almost a minute.
There's no LED:s in that display, is there? It's just small light bulbs, right? Some other guy put some light on the light sensor to the left with his phone - to make the display brighter.
All that work and you settle for less than a perfect result?

Had no choice, didn't have a back up ribbon cable to try again. Plus the owner wasn't too worried about the issue, they were just happy they could see the display now. Would like to try again but not sure how much longer the car is going to last.

Do you need glue for this repair ?
    Or just soldering

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel  4 роки тому

Need only heat as shown. The ribbon has a heat activated solder/glue that binds to the screen.

Did You try replacing the light bulbs?

    • @jungleking007Channel

+Tom Buckley I have not yet. Didn't have the bulbs to do so, but I'm sure that's partly why the screen isn't showing in some sections.

I'm sorry, I don't have that information. I gave the soldering Iron and Tee bar about 10-15 minutes before I used it. Basically until it was as hot as it could get.
