  • New home? Starting a lawn from scratch? Ready for an instant lawn? Here are 7 tips for your new lawn install.
    The lawn has finally arrived (on pallets).The day of installing turf is here and I want to take you through what I do to ensure success. This video will take you through the processes from prep to lay and show you some of the things that I do differently.
    1. Topsoil. Make sure you get enough of a layer especially if you are dealing with a contractor grade install. The time to amend is now.
    2. Rake Rake Rake. Get it smooth. This is huge. Don't waste your time leveling the lawn later. Do it now.
    3. Polymers for water conservation. Do it. You will be happy you did.
    soilmoist.com/
    4. Pre-treat with fertilizer. I love this and there are many ways to accomplish it. Granular, liquid, whatever you choose will make a difference in establishment. This is also the best time any pH and soil amendments.
    5. Source your turf. Call the growers. Dig in for the best success.
    6. Lay in a brick pattern and tuck and roll! Don't leave gaps... cmon!
    do it right, get it tight!
    7. Water. make sure you keep the soil moist 3-34" down and maintain that for the first few weeks, this is vital. soon you can water less and start your regular feeding and mowing.
    My first Mow will be in 2 weeks and I can't wait.

    On a project now where I took out an old lawn 3 times this size with a flat shovel and a dolly for the brute bins to go into dumpster. Using toppers for soil and finishing install this week. In 100 degree weather in santa clarita it is tough work having to do the whole thing with no help and no machines

    I did my lawn using zoyzia plugs and found the process so much longer...weeds also sprung up like crazy between the plugs - it was alot a work to get rid of the weeds constantly... and it seems like it will take a full year before all the spaces are filled with grass.
    Your method of laying the rectangle sod seems a better way to slow weeds, and even though its not rooted yet it appears to be finished.... I will adopt your method for the other part of the yard...
    Very well done video!

    Excited to see you have your lawn in. Been fun watching you work with others lawns but also enjoy watching the progress of the same lawn and it's maintenance. The polymer use in lawns is interesting... heard of them more for potted plants. Will the polymer last decades or is it degraded over a few years by microbes?
    Won't humic acid have a similar effect to increase the soils water holding capacity by flocculating the clay and increasing micropore space? Curious to know does humic acid also increase actual water retention too similar to a hydration surfactant?

  • @buds.8645
    @buds.8645 3 роки тому +1

    Considering your subsoil conditions, I would have added a lot of peat moss and compost. Probably would have added a good amount of biochar and a flood of humic acid. Would I have made a mistake?

    • @Lawncology

    I had landscapers regrade and install new sod, and waiting at least 3 weeks to mow. Big question: how long does it take for the sod roots to start growing into the soil below? I'm at 2 weeks post-install and only seeing a few. I can still pull up edges of the sod.

  • @jackf6622
    @jackf6622 Рік тому +2

    Used too much of that polymer stuff and it completely ruined things. It's like jelly under the lawn and when I walk on it ( 3 weeks later) it squishes out...not saying it's bad stuff but use it VERY sparingly... Would have been much better off without it then over doing it and it's very easy to overdo

    • @Lawncology

    You know a helluva lot more than me. So, I'm asking vs one of those, "I know better in the form of a question". Why didn't you put any humic and carbon down b4 sod? Bc of the quality of the topsoil?

    • @Lawncology
      @Lawncology  3 роки тому

      That is a great question and you’ll see that upcoming on the next project. For this, I’m starting it from “scratch” as they say. Only doing a top down method. The green will be different. I am going to send the soil off for testing shortly, a couple weeks or so before I feed it topically. By that time the light dose I sprayed on the soil will have moved on. Then we start the top down process.
