I would recommend thining out the milk once and then overdoing the milk, I have seen that it helps me more knowing how to get a balance in the middle rather than just guessing every time. Maybe count seconds in your head when aerating and then balancing out!

Think I can see what's going wrong: that puck's made contact with the shower screen (the bit that disperses the water through the coffee). You can tell because it's left an impression in the final puck. The same thing happened to me, couldn't figure it out. Quick tip is to grind, distribute, tamp the portafilter, then chuck it in the machine and pull it back out again without pulling the shot -- that'll tell ya if it's making contact. If so try dropping the dose down. Remember that 18 -> 36g @ 30s is not set in stone: experimentation really is the name of the game here :-)

yeah we realised that but it happened with a 16g dose as well so we thought it was just the machine. but we recently bought a supposed 'deeper' basket to try with our current portafilter. hopefully that helps sort that issue out🤞🏻 we like our coffee strong and 16 > 32 wasn't cutting it hahaha😂 - zee

@@thegroundedduo Machines are weird! I've got a Lelit Elizabeth, and its included 18g IMS basket can actually hold more like 16g for medium roast. Good choice on the deeper basket :-)

@@JeremyFoster-ve6kq hahah yeah, the default rancilio basket was 16g and the current one we're using is a 20g basket but we're only using 18g dose as the impression would be heaps more if we actually used 20g. fingers crossed for the new basket!🫣 - zee

Hey Guys, you can't avoid the "Rancilio Kiss", but the puck still looked over filled. Maybe try reducing the ammount by 0.25g? The stength of the coffee really comes from the Ratio you use. The 2:1 in 25-32sec is only a guide, its really down to what tastes good to you. But, that said, there needs to be a certain amount of contact time between the water and coffee. That "cappucino" looked great!!! 😀 Are you doing your weekly backflush to rinse out the solenoid?

hey raj! i love that phrase, gonna use it next time hahah. yeah we might have too, altho we're really hesitant as an 18g dose tastes soo much better than the 16g dose😮‍💨 will definitely try whatever we can with the hardware first before going back to the dose☕ yes we definitely have been backflushing, actually recently made a video about it so keep a lookout for it! heheh - zee

Good cup of coffee. I noticed that recent all the video hit around 23sec to 36g. Maybe u should grind finer to get closer to 30sec mark.

hello! hahah you noticed that! yeah we've been monitoring the extraction time and are planning on trying a slightly finer grind size🫘 - zee

Although you might need to grind a tiny bit finer, the speed of the shot would increase with the puck making contact with the shower screen, as it would create a channel in the centre where the divot is. Try using a puck screen! It keeps the shower screen cleaner, so less backflushing and it also reduces channels with a more even water distribution. One last thing, the distribution tool you used after WDT might actually do more harm than good, as it compacts parts of the grounds where the convex part initially hits the grounds, you’re better off WDT’ing, tapping the basket downward to remove air pockets and then tamping.
    Really nice workflow! :)

thank you for the great tips! really easy to understand as well🥹 regarding the puck screen, we actually ordered some. however we were wondering if the rancilio's shower screen screw might damage it (if you notice our puck, there's always a little dent in the centre). having said that, we've also ordered a deeper basket in hopes to sort that out. and for the distribution tool, i've actually never thought of it that way. but you definitely have a point, i might actually try your method to see if it makes a difference heheh. thanks again!!🤎 - zee

@@thegroundedduo No problem! 😊 a deeper basket might help. Just make sure you leave a little room between the puck screen and the screw of the shower screen, because as they puck absorbs water it can expand slightly (more so if it is a dark roast), and could potentially damage it. As for now, simply reduce your dose, try 16-17 grams and check to ensure there is no imprint in the puck. Focus on achieving an even extraction and don’t worry about how big the dose of coffee is! :)

Another little tips 😂, try prepare the milk first in the jug before brewing the coffee (not steam it) just pour it into the jug first, and you can continue doing the espresso shot, after that just switch to steaming and steam the milk right away after brewing, so the espresso doesn't sit to long and lost the crema, u can clean the coffee puck after steaming the milk, and i see the coffee it's quite light roast try to grind finer and use longer time around 28-33 sec, i think it's still fine, hope its help 👍

hey tommy! unfortunately our little rancilio's a single boiler which only allows us to either pull a shot or steam milk. so usually after pulling a shot, we'd have to wait for it to heat up before we can steam the milk🥺 we are planning on playing around with the grind size to see how it affects the time but for now, the shot tastes pretty good hahaha - zee
