    I've gotten bullied by the Deaf community numerous of times because I'm hard of hearing. Being hard of hearing feels like a bad stigma because just because we speak or can hear. I didn't learn ASL until I was 18. Now I'm fluent. I don't want anyone else to have to go through what I did because it really discouraged me because I felt like I wasn't Deaf enough to be apart of the community.

      Thank you for your comment. Like you, I am severely hearing impaired and did not learn ASL until I went to college. I felt that I was not fully accepted in the Deaf community because I was not as fluent in ASL.

      Frieda Loves Bread that’s terrible. It truly sucks because you can literally feel the separation of deaf people based on deafness and how well you can sign.

      Me too. I was raised in an hearing world all mainstream at school and an hearing family. And I’m deaf and hard of hearing. I started to learn LSM (Mexican Sign language) since two years ago and I sometimes feel excluded in the community because I am not deaf enough for them…

    I love this. I have faced this ALOT since losing my hearing. And have had SO many terrible experiences meeting other deaf people especially when I first started learning ASL. People who looked down on me for not being “culturally deaf.” Or would get mad or frustrated when I couldn’t follow conversation....It gets hard and I really feel stuck in the middle a lot and not fully accepted by either community....It’s been a very confusing and hard time. But THANK you for sharing this 🤟🏾❤️

      I have had similar experiences to you. I'm learning ASL but feel look down upon for not being culturally deaf. I have difficulty following people who sign very fast but I'm persistent and eventually will become fluent. But I am still deaf enough!

    This is beautiful. I can't thank you enough for making this video. I'm a teen who's partially deaf/HOH, use a CI and hearing aid, and have always struggled with my deaf identity. I've been told that I'm not deaf enough and it's hurt a LOT. This video feels so validating because it represents the different backgrounds in our community and the variety of people who believe in everyone being deaf enough. Thank you for spreading this message.

    Today I was at a Deaf event, they showed this, I started to cry deeply, a woman came around and quickly sat next to me, she signed if I was fine and was very supportive, i signed thank you repeatedly for her kindness and support. After, she asked to hug and we did. I haven't thought I was deaf enough, now I can see that I am deaf enough. I needed to see this.

      There's a video that exactly expresses how I feel, "Emily McClure Major Tom ASL" space is Deaf world, earth is Hearing world. This is a sharp contrast to my previous "Tortoise Hare" rabbit is deafness, turtle is ASL learn, rabbit fall into rabbit-hole, everyone learn ASL, everyone win.

But I grew up from my family who is Mixed as Deaf mom/hearing dad. My parent always look at me as Deaf Enough to them and That community of Deaf who will always say You are Deaf enough. aka better place to hang out with all Welcome!

    I freaking feel this so much, so deep. I grew up hearing, and then completely lost my hearing. I then became fluent in sign, to communicate, and became involved in the deaf community. I don't talk now since I have horrible voice control, since I can't hear myself and it's embarrassing & uncomfortable for me.
    I come from a hearing family, being the only deaf person, and even though I can't hear anything, I've seen comments towards me in the community on occasion, that I'm not "really" deaf like they are. I feel this video so much 😭🥹

    I can't find the words to tell you how important this video was to me. I have struggled for so long trying to figure out if I can say "I am deaf". I was so afraid because everyone always said "not enough", so I would rather have people get mad at me thinking I was ignoring them when I could not hear them or just nod my head and say yeah as if I knew what they were saying. I'm not feeling so afraid anymore. I really needed this. Being reminded I'm not alone always helps. Thank you. ❤️

    My Soul wept with relief and acceptance while watching this video. Nerve damage from ear infections stole my hearing 8 years ago, I lost 88% of my hearing. This year I will be a half-century plus 5 years, my signing skills still have room for improvement but I am not giving up on myself. Most people who have known me before the ear infection still expect me to be fully hearing. Well, I'm not and I cannot nor will not apologize for it. Perhaps their acceptance is because I am at 90% vocal. Growing up, I learned to speak 5 different languages so naturally, I can speak them but I can no longer hear them well - especially without my hearing aids. But I try to accommodate my family and friends because they are short-sighted about my hearing capabilities. My hearing continues to decrease so the time is coming when I won't hear anything they say. Now I get to accept that I am deaf enough

    Thank you! As someone who has slowly been going Deaf for over 20 years, (without my hearing aids I am at about 30% hearing) I am currently trying to learn American Sign Language and integrate into my local Deaf culture. But I have also often worried that I might be “forcing myself” onto a community that really didn’t want me because I wasn’t Deaf enough. This makes me feel a lot more confident about participating in local Deaf events and getting to know my Deaf community. Thank you!

    I'm hard of hearing and I grew up in a hearing family. I have to read lips. American sign Language was my first Language then it faded away and I'm relearning it along with Japanese sign language and British sign language. I met a deaf girl and I talked to her some and she looked like she was gonna cry of happiness because there was someone to talk to in sign language. This video is beautiful and shows a strong message.

    🤟🏾 Hello!! I’m glad you mentioned this. I’m hearing. But am VERY interested in the deaf community. Which I’ve been learning. I just watched “Deaf U” on Netflix and was EXTREMELY SURPRISED by how there’s such blatant racism amongst the Deaf community😩 I only thought it happened in the hearing boy was I shocked 😳 and mad at the same time. I felt so sad that you really had to drop out because of the blatant racism and like the Deaf say “Elite”🙄 I’m glad also you followed your heart 💜🤟🏾🙌🏾

    I feel like I always have to validate my deafness since I didn’t lose my hearing until I was 23. So I feel embarrassed I can’t sign well and then I get anxiety to try and be apart of deaf culture and to the community. I still do not know how to get myself into deaf functions. I’m stuck between worlds and it’s lonely.

And some hearing people tell me I'm not like them cuz I need help to understand oral communication. That makes me cry. I feel forced to fit into a community.why cant I be myself. I am hearing and learning ASL while also learning about the d/Deaf community. I think it's great that you are spreading a message of acceptance of all kinds of d/Deaf people.
    Something I thought was interesting was when one lady said "the big 'D' and 'd' should be thrown out'". (2:56) I know I don't have a place to judge because I'm hearing, but I think maybe, it's still okay to have "deaf" and "Deaf", for various people to have a choice of which they identify with more personally, BUT it is never for other people to determine, only yourself. For example if someone thinks of themselves as Deaf, other people in the community should not tell them they can't do that, they are not Deaf enough to have that label, etc.

    Hi! So I have a story to share and I would love some opinions from anyone in the d/Deaf community! So at my local community college I am part of ASL Club. (All the officers and most attendees are all hearing, including me, but all of our ASL teachers are Deaf and we have many opportunities to interact with and learn from the local Deaf community.)
    Last semester we decided that the club had enough funds to create a scholarship for (a) Deaf student(s)! Which is great! But we had to create a list of requirements for who qualifies. Our Deaf teacher basically wanted it to qualify only for someone who is profoundly deaf (he even wanted audiogram results), has been involved in the Deaf community, and uses/has used an interpreter. As a hearing student, I didn’t feel like I couldn’t speak up against my Deaf teacher or voice my concerns that we would be excluding some deaf kids who maybe aren’t as medically deaf, or who haven’t discovered ASL or the Deaf community yet, but need support nonetheless.
    What are your thoughts on this? Are there maybe any benefits to limiting it to culturally Deaf people? Is there a way I could have said something without seeming like I’m imposing my hearing view on the Deaf community? To me, an outsider to the Deaf community, it seems like this is going against the very message of this video and is pretty exclusive. But again, I’m not really in a position to say as a hearing person, so I’d love any thoughts from deaf and Deaf people alike! ❤️

    • @stellwyn
      @stellwyn 3 роки тому +1

      Oh wow that is exclusive! Regardless of levels of hearing loss, we all struggle with the hearing world. Eg I'm moderately deaf in one ear and that's enough to make me struggle. So sign language is useful for everyone in the deaf community. Restricting the scholarship to profoundly deaf people only is problematic when we ALL have so much to benefit from using sign. Also, restricting it to someone who's 'culturally deaf' means that deaf people who grew up in the hearing world and didn't get a chance to learn sign are missed out, when they need the support to learn. It almost sounds like your teacher is trying to get a deaf person to help teach people, if they already have to be involved in the community....

    • @greenishbagel9998
      @greenishbagel9998 3 роки тому

      I was taught to spell it with a capital D because it is a culture and a community like saying "peruvian" people or "american" people. I was taught that because we dont spell American or Peruvian with a lowercase, so Deaf shouldnt be either unless it is used for a medical term.

    I mean... I donʼt understand why anybody should be PROUD to be deaf🤔🤔 we hearing people arenʼt proud of our working ears either... And before you start whining about this comment: Iʼve been on a date with a deaf guy and Iʼve been into deafness for long.

    I watched Deaf U and I have to say how disappointed I was. These "Elite" acted like a bunch of emotionally immature high school girls instead of grown women. Its one thing to be proud of your culture but its another to think of yourselves as superior than others especially within your community. History has proven that, that way of thinking is dangerous. Hitler thought that way. Lets not forget there was even a time where black deaf children weren't allowed in a white deaf school. You can look up the history of Black American Sign Language. Or the fact that deaf people as a whole have faced discrimination among hearing people. So please stop this ignorant way of thinking "Elite" people. Also, the fact that you felt you had power to be able to "shun" someone from the community...grow up.
    To those who felt less, dont let nobody have that power over you! Surround yourself around mature like-minded individuals who are going through the same thing you are going through as well as Deaf people who are willing to take you under their wing to share culture, knowledge, and language without judgment.
    To Cheyenne, this is something I always told my daughters "Not everyone who smiles in your face is your friend." ❤ My thing is this, if you come to me about someone talking bad about me...the first thing I'm going to ask is did you stick up for me? If you didn't, then get out of my face with all that negativity.
