      I enjoyed the video, you're getting closer to the truth.
      You have to go back way before Bruce. In China, including Hong Kong it's all about the Ching versus the Ming. This doesn't come out in the western quest for Kung Fu and the questions they ask the Sifus because they have no idea what to ask and the Sifus have no reason to tell the whole story.
      Start with the Tai Phoung rebellion, 40 million people died. Learn about the Hakka participation because they became the southern Kung Fu in the Boxer rebellion.
      In the Boxer rebellion Christians were targeted along with the Hakka people because of the quasi Christian cause of the emperor who started the Tai Phoung rebellion and this led to the expulsion of foreigners especially missionaries. Islam was also moving down from the north in schools such as Hsing I. This led to the "revolution" because of the religious influence in how the "government", Ching or Ming, should operate and whether Buddhist or Taoist ideologies were sufficient to compete with the West as a nation.
      The Kung Fu schools were secret societies networked according to their alliance with the developing GMT (Guo Min Tang) or the communist movement. Kinda like the Masons against the Catholics. Everyone is involved.
      "Criminal", triad, activity was to provide funding and logistic support for one side or the other. These battles were not about martial arts or simple street gang beefs, they were about civil war.
      Ip Man developed his Wing Chun for use by the secret police while infiltrating cells to capture opposition members for interrogation, that is why he works with the police in Hong Kong and the restaurant union which is "secret" network operating in the open, the reason for the initiations and secret teachings. These operating strategy and tactics meetings, not just advanced techniques.
      William Cheung was sent to Ip Man by his father who was in the police force and therefore probably did learn the more advanced skills. Bruce was groomed to be a Kung Fu actor and then movie star to compete with the opposition films because those monies were, like and with the Triads, were providing logistics support. The operas and films contained not just the history of the conflicts but embedded information about future plans, propaganda. Bruce connected with major US players and had immediate access to the Triads and could oppose the Triads film industry in Hong Kong, like the Shaw Brothers. It's not enough just to say "the Triads" you had to know which side a Triad was on, Ching or Ming. Why do you think the TV show Kung Fu came about? It was propaganda for the fusion of the American West with the mythology of the "Shaolin" South which was the home of the GMT.

      any body that has done wing chun for a length of time (those who have trained long enough to be in an actual street fight) knows the stance is for training, not fighting!
      the wing chun stance is for the following:
      balance so your opponent does not knock you over
      reflection & redirection as opposed to hard blocking
      to make your muscle reflexes such that your entire body is a shock absorber

    It's good to finally hear someone highlighting the influence of Wong Shun Leung in the Bruce Lee story. Usually everyone focusses on the Ip Man connection because of his obvious credentials but ignore Wong, who was the Ip Man school fighting champion and successor, also who was Bruce's main instructor as you have highlighted in this video. Bruce's father was a close friend of Ip Man. Bruce faced racism in his homeland because of his German roots. Despite this fact Ip Man taught him Wing Chun. Bruce who was often involved into street fights beat up the son of a police officer and Bruce Lee's parents fearing repercussions moved the fighting prodigy to the United States to avoid trouble. Living in America had it's challenges. Bruce studied philosophy and graduated with his thesis the Tao of Gung Fu, a philosophy of self defense not to be confused with the Tao of Jeet kune do which he wrote as a book later on. He began teaching American students Gung Fu eventually angering traditional masters of Chinese Martial arts including Ip Man who considered Kung fu should belong only to the Chinese. This was mainly why Ip Man stopped teaching the core of Wing chun to Bruce Lee which comprised of the low kicks. Bruce stopped teaching wing chun since he didn't completely master the art. Therefore he had to create an art of his own that would work for him. He studied boxing, taekwondo and fencing to develop a non telegraphic as well as famous one inch punch. Bruce Lee's involvement in the world of cinema further angered the Chinese masters which led to the famous fight with Wong Jack Man. The result was unclear. Many said Bruce won however the spectators present all spoke with contradictory statements. On the sets of movies Bruce learned Grappling with stuntman gene lebell, notably a leg technique he used in Way of the Dragon. He also trained with Dan Inosanto by adapting Silat hand techniques combined with wing chun and boxing. He became a worldwide sensation with his movies and trained many famous western actors and prior to his tragic passing finally wrote the Tao of Jeet Kune Do. His death also remains a mystery to this day. For all those wondering about Bruce's dance like stances and motions in fight scenes, he was previously had Cha Cha Cha dancing skills

    Great upload. Bruce was forced to leave Hong Kong or he would've been arrested and sent to jail for fighting. Hence, he didn't get to master Wing Chun. In the U.S., he reluctantly started teaching Jesse Glover, his first black student, as he didn't appreciate the way his own peers treated him back home due to his mixed race. But in the end, he triumphed over his many challenges.

    I love stories about Bruce that doesn't paint him as an untouchable/unbeatable prodigy throughout his life. It shows a human side where a phenomenon learned MA and one of the first to admit most styles have fluff and flash not suitable for a street fight. I trained in Wing Chun because I couldn't find anywhere that taught JKD because of how I idolized Bruce. MMA shows that he was right. Take the most effective movements from diffrent style and be efficient.

    Thanks for sharing. Interesting take on the topic. I train in Wing Chun for many years and read a lot of books and articles on the subject. Gotta say I’ve never heard this side of things in regard to William Cheung fighting Bruce because of a Triads? Cheung and Bruce were friends from the beginning.
    From everything I’ve read, the two remained friends until Lee’s death. I’ve heard rumors of Cheung Father possibly being a corrupt Police Chief too. Again, rumors, Could be, dunno 🤷🏾‍♂️. Hong Kong in those days… gangster!
    I think another important missing fact in this story. Cheung and WSL were both assigned by Yip Man to continue Lee’s lessons after he was forced out. Cheung was 3 years ahead of Bruce in Wing Chun, And WSL was senior to Cheung by a few months in WC. Also, he was older than both Lee and Cheung by 5 years.
    After school William and Bruce would train outside the city limits in an old barn. I believe Peter Lee would sometimes be there too, But don’t quote me. Peter was an amateur fencing 🤺 competitor. When Cheung left for school in Australia. Bruce was full time training with WSL until he departed for the states. Bruce Lee’s first student Jesse Glover mentioned that Bruce would often talked about William Cheung and WSL as the best street fighters he had ever seen. They both played a major role in Lee’s early development.

    The story that Bruce Lee told about himself is so appealing because it fits into the hero's journey arc, and it feeds into a lot of the magical thinking mindset grindset stuff, where this dude just spouted profound wisdom and had superhuman abilities. The reality is a lot more complicated and, in many ways, completely at odds with how he portrayed himself.

      @GoldenbellTraining  2 місяці тому +11

      I've discussed some of this in other videos, but what does 1968 have to do with THIS topic? We're only talking about what happened in Hong Kong.
      Besides, Wing Chun is still the foundation for JFJKD. It doesn't matter what appears to be different when Bruce still had the attributes from training Wing Chun for 12 years.
      That doesn't just vanish.

    • @axelstone3131
      @axelstone3131 2 місяці тому +3

      @ yeh that’s true. This video is about his early years, and yes, of course, his attributes he picked up weren’t lost when he changed things, but jfjkf kept changing until the 70’s and people teach it as it was in the 60’s with a heavy emphasis on trapping which Bruce removed altogether from the curriculum in 71.
      As Ted Wong said, imagine Jkd as an apple, where wing chun in the beginning was the core of JKD, and the flesh being Jkd. You don’t eat the core of the apple, you eat the flesh and throw the core away. Jkd by 73 was pretty much fencing and boxing with little to no wing chun.
      But yeh I’m not trying to argue with you or anything like that. I’ve just noticed that many other people, are stuck on this period of Bruce’s martial arts development, not understanding that he moved beyond it.
      As Jesse Glover said, Bruce went beyond style. Even when he sparred Wong Sheung Leung in April 1973 in his Kowloon Tong home, Wong said Bruce used “his method” there was no mention of anything wing chun.

    • @guerrerodelainfo4220
      @guerrerodelainfo4220 2 місяці тому +2

      @@axelstone3131his method was to be formless, shapeless like water. jkd was always evolving. an acquired skill simply doesn't get forgotten

    • @axelstone3131
      @axelstone3131 2 місяці тому +3

      @ and what does that look like when it comes down to practical application? You don’t even underhand what he’s talking about. He’s talking about adaptability, but adaptability starts by having a structure, good body mechanic and footwork. You don’t know what he’s even talking about. Having no form doesn’t mean being “formless” it means being able to adapt to any style by going beyond style. Look into the progressive weapons chart.
      Quoting him won’t get you Bruce Lee like skills either. You have to actually train.
      "People don't get the kind of speed and power that is required in effective Gung Fu from just doing techniques. Bruce's power was the result of his body development which he pushed to such a high level that he was approaching maximum human tolerances. His ligament and tendon strength was stronger than that of normal athletes, because of the hundreds of thousands of movements that he had done against different kinds of pressure, weights, springs, bodies and gravity. His muscle tone was such that when he flexed his arm the muscles were as hard as stones. This maximum development in muscle tone enable Bruce to push for their maximum level of development. Everyone doesn't have to develop the same strength that Bruce did, but they do have to strengthen certain areas of their body until these areas are stronger than comparable areas on stronger people. Most of these areas are generally under developed on even the most highly trained athletes".
      - Jesse Glover.
      “As in boxing or fencing, JKD is a step by step process where every move must be repeated many times". Bruce Lee
      “It is not daily increase but daily decrease, hack away the unessential. The closer to the source, the less wastage there is.”
      - Bruce Lee
      "The majority of people who practice
      Jeet Kune Do are mixed up, they think it should be a part of Wing Chun, a part of MMA, a part of Thai boxing, a part of wrestling, you know, a part of Wing Chun, which this is completely incorrect. You don't go from style to style, you go from distance to target or target to distance. Longest weapon to the nearest target and the most direct and efficient route possible, that is Jeet Kune Do."
      - Tommy Carruthers
      In this case, Bruce’s “evolution” was towards simplicity, not complexity, so no he wasn’t adding new things over time or mixing things. He was discarding and finding more effective and direct methods.

    I find it amazing hearing these stories about Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is one of the reasons why I took martial arts in the first place and why I studied it so hard and so vividly. But martial arts is such a powerful weapon that tend to lack the ability to not use it that much Due to not causing harm to other people. I truly believe that I would have been something extra extraordinary, but I gave it up quite a few years ago, and I lack the ability to even just practice and study that being said martial arts is a beautiful technique and extra extraordinary weapon is used accurately. Bruce Lee has paid the way for many martial arts in today’s society all over the world. He will always be the legend of martial arts. May he rest in peace.

    I trained with Yip Man’s two sons at the headquarters in Kowloon in 1997. There were a bunch of old guys who were contemporaries of Bruce Lee who still trained there.
    One night at dim sum, I asked them about training with Bruce. They were universally “meh”. The consensus was that his skill level was average, but his passion was high. We continued eating until one man, who had been training longer than anyone else alive, punched me in the shoulder and exclaimed happily, “Bruce Lee taught me to cha cha!”
    Wing Chun, middle of the pack. Cha cha? Champion of Hong Kong!

      Would like to know how many of these actors were real champions. I know Chuck Norris & Benny ‘the jet’ Urquidez were pro champions. Some great martial artists in films but not all were champions.

That is why every time I watch Bruce Lee I study how is knows Anatomy so well and can move in a way to take advantage in every way and not waste a movement. He is an absolute master at manipulating someone else's movements against them. His fluid movements and lack of predictability is just shocking. Don't forget his speed. I had watched videos about him over 20 years ago talking about he studied Anatomy at a very high level. He knew how to move you to get the result he wanted. The guy studied so much more than just throwing punches or kicks. He was a student in every way.

    Bruce Lee had the mentality what really led him bettering himself becoming a realistic martial artist fighter. Regardless of what any so called MMA fighters thinks whether he was a real martial artist or not. Just because he wasn't in any organized ring fighting, didn't mean he wasn't a skilled fighter. Hence! It has gotten to the point Bruce Lee has became a threat unintentionally to the other martial artists because he has become just that good. That's what set him far apart from other martial artists

Those who say he never got in the ring or recorded fights, etc. He appears to have more real fights than most people today. Constantly in trouble and being chased by the Triads, serious stuff. He only wanted to learn what was real. Not some ring fights. Great video, I'd like to see more like this. Thanks.
