    Martial arts whirlwind Jet Li has kicked an incalculable amount of ass over his cinematic career, from his early Hong Kong hits like ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA (playing his signature role, Wong Fei Hung) and FIST OF LEGEND, through his Hollywood breakthrough in LETHAL WEAPON 4 and ROMEO MUST DIE. His legendary status even qualified him to join other action stars in THE EXPENDABLES. But during the last decade, his output drastically diminished and concerns were raised about his health. Follow the flying fists and find out “WTF Happened to JET LI!”

      @@yeon723 I agree that all those martial art films has taken a toll on him and he’s no longer a young man who is acrobatic with the physicality to do all those challenging physical moves on camera. He’s one of the greatest movie martial artists of all time and will forever has a place in the conversation of greatest film martial artist of all time. But the present day scene belongs to the younger guys who are coming through because Jet Li, Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen are of a generation that’s rooted in the past

    I was fortunate enough to work with Jet Li on Romeo Must die, and all I can say is WOW watching him and Russel Wong spar in between takes in a Vancouver back alley was just awe inspiring! I grew up watching Bruce Li, Jackie Chan and all the pooly dubbed martial arts movies including the Xiao Lin movies and so I was giddy, I got to rap for him and AAlyiah let me tell you 90's and early 2000's film industry in Vancouver was magical, between the sci fi horror action movies it was so good!

    The fact this guy hasn't ended up in a marvel movie blows my mind.
    He is made for protecting our universe ... dushbag
    He is clearly selfless and his amazing heartfelt works for charity proceeding his own real life experiences is inspirational.
    He is and will always be one of my favourite martial arts actors of all time.
    Damn he must have put in more work in terms of hours, basically putting his body on the line more than many actors ever.
    Remember this guy rarely used stunt doubles.
    Underrated is a word maybe used to often but since Jet Li isn't a house hold name as i think it should be id say underrated is a good call.

    • @jasonsezno8197
      @jasonsezno8197 10 місяців тому +3

      First of all his name is Jet Li not Lee.
      Secondly he was a household name in the west after Romeo must die. And he stayed a household name until a couple years after forbidden kingdom. Then he came back a little with the expendable movies... but not the way it used to be. And since his most recent western movie is Mulan, and alot of people didn't even realize jet li was in the movie, that's probably why he has drifted from public consciousness especially the younger parts of the public.

    Jet Li being "too fast for the cameras to register his movements" wasn't the problem. The problem was Hollywood's still ongoing, very annoying obsession with adding excessive camera movement and jump cuts during a fight scene.
    As we've seen from this video, the Chinese martial arts movies of the late 80s/early 90s had technology decades behind that of Hollywood's early 2000s and yet their fight scenes looked phenomenal and read just fine despite the actors moving like saiyans. You know why? Because *the camera freakin stood still!* It stayed on the widest shot, allowing the fight to breathe and only moved when the fight did while still maintaining that wide shot and made jumpcuts where it made sense. Hollywood's camera is equivalent to that of an annoying, drunk douche at a club constantly trying to cut in between a group of girls just trying to have fun and zipping around them like a cartoon character on a sugar rush.

    • @alekesam
      @alekesam 2 роки тому +36

      To be fair, part of the reason why Hollywood does all of those cuts is often to cover for the actor's lack of skill. The Raid 1 n 2, most of Jackie Chan's non-Hollywood movies as well as Jet's, meanwhile, can do those long takes and wide angle matches is because they're skilled enough to pull it off.
      There's also the lack of good choreography in Hollywood in general which doesn't help either.

      @RoyRossow Рік тому +10

      lol love your explanation... and it does make sense...I know this is about Jet Li, but in regards to Hollywood filming... in my opinion one of the most annoying and down right confusing filmed movies that does sooo many cuts to point i can't tell what the hell is going on during action scenes is the Transformer series with Shia LaBeouf.

      But yes they did have to slow down so the camera could register the movement cuz his punch and kicks where to fast for the camera's frame per second could catch it the same with a lot of skilled martial artist it costs 5k us Dollars for a camera that can get a 50-80 frame's per second

    One of the major reasons Jet Li turned down The Matrix sequels was that the contract would allow his images and moves to be owned by the studio. So, if they felt like it, they could have transplanted him into videogames or anything else without his consent or compensation.
    Also, the fact Jet Li didn't realize High-Risk was making fun of Jackie Chan is further proof of what a good-natured person he is.

    Hero, Fearless and Kiss of the Dragon are by far my favorite movies of Jet Li.
    Hero is damn right poetry, yes it does the fancy Kung Fu but fighting actually feels kinetic and they are actually striking each other. The ending could make a grown man cry and Fearless was also just as good with grounded fight scenes and excellent choreography.
    Jet Li earned his name "Jet" due to his lightning fast reflexes and speed. He will go down as a legend in cinematography history as man dedicated to his craft as a martial artist. I didn't care much about his "acting" in fact, not speaking so much adds to his mystery and made him more badass which is funny because in real life he's Mr. Chatter Box, but on the silver screen he's a mysterious warrior that speaks through his fists.
    The fact he's so charitable too, how can you not love this man, his intentions are so pure and genuine. He's committed his whole life to help others now and people should and need to respect that. That's what his Buddhism has taught him and he's living through his principles. You can't say that about most people, putting money in a donation box doesn't necessarily make you a good person...you don't even know where that money is going.
    Jet Li is a man of action, both on screen and in real life.

    As a life-long fan of Hong Kong/Chinese martial arts films (and cinema in general) the one thing I find people often overlook is the on-screen presence of Jet Li... he has a natural gravitas akin to Bruce Lee, where your eye is naturally drawn to him even if he's not the focus of the shot. A quiet, calm presence that can instantaneously transform into fluid energy... no overblown editing or effects required. 👌

    I still remember jet li's first big American movie with the leathal weapon movies. I remember he was so fast and new on the screen. I only remember it because I watched it at six flags in Atlanta Georgia. Here I am now nearly 30 years later and seeing he is in bad shape lately is very sad. Such an incredible actor and martial artist bringing wushu style martial arts to the big screen and allowing the world to see the beauty of his skill. The grace in it's brutality. I hope he doesn't suffer in his current ailments. And wish him the best of health. His asian film accolades are truly gems and one of my favorites of his is his portrayal of the monkey king. Mainly because I love the dragon ball z in it's entirety. From dragon ball to the newer super series. And all movies. But jet li allowed me to find out about the monkey king and the story journey to the west. Great book. Thanks for all the movies
