    It always bugged me when people over and over repeated "you can't use sound film anymore".... I was always thinking "why the heck not?" This looks and sounds great. And we love goofy here. That's why we all come here, isn't it? Keep up the good work.

    This shows how engineers perfected Film & cameras for sound years before the digital age !, I recall reading about sound super 8 I think it came out in 1973 ?

    Very good Mike, wonder if people in 20 years time or more will find this ( or other reels ) and wonder how to play them back, will they go to the trouble of feeding through a projector ...its good to Pass this expertise to the next generation.

    Very impressive. That came out great, both sight and sound !
    You should make the “news” a part of all of your sound film tests when possible, I loved it ! With the right wardrobe and setting this could be mistaken for 1960, great works and experiments, thanks again ! ! !

    Great stuff! Since the vertical scratches are completely straight, the scratching very likely happened at the gate. It's either worn parts or dust and grime build up. The microphone obviously has a thin sound, but I actually like the quality. It- together with old mag strip and probably worn capacitors in the circuits - has that vintage saturation, making it sound like it was recorded in the early 1970s. Yep, the decades zip by quickly. 1994 was 30 years ago.

      Thank you, Christian! That's kind of what I was thinking with the projector. I always feel like the gate is the problem child of a projector. Definitely going to see what I can do.

      @@Filmboy24 I had three super 8 projectors. An Eumig with friction drive. Lots of problems. Then a Bauer T-18. A plastic guide part wore out and scratched the films badly. Stay away from claw fed (no sprocket before the gate) projectors! Then the Bauer T-600. Excellent machine, but the sound heads were made of a soft material and wore out, but only after two decades and many feature length Derann prints and tons of my own stuff.

    For some weird reason unexposed old stock Super 8 soundfilm does not appear all that often over here on ebay. NO matter if Kodak stock or any other brand that produced Soundfilm for Super 8. Otherwise i probably would have dabbled with it too some years ago. Also your wife makes a fantastic Camera operator :) I noticed a few dropouts in the audio and yeah i guess this comes from the magnetic tape material that was used for the soundtrack of this particular reel. That is more or less the only thing you can expect after 30+ years when magnetic tape material ages. It would be interesting to know where Kodak sourced their Magnetic audio tape material they used to add to their Super 8 Soundfilms? I suppose the later Soundfilmstock used subpar audiotape material to cut corners and soundfilm probably wasn't as profitable anymore in 1994 as it used to be 10-15 years earlier.

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks, Mike! My wife thanks you as well 😄. I would love to know where Kodak sourced their magnetic tape, wondering if the may have produced it in house. Seems like it wouldn't be incredibly difficult to cut standard cassette tape down to fit, although most of that is aging as well. I guess in the meantime, we just have to make due with the limited stuff we can find :(

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  10 місяців тому +1

      I was about 15 feet away from the camera with the handheld microphone. I think it also helps that the Canon 1014XL-S is a relatively quiet camera. At least as far as Super 8 cameras go.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6
      @KRAFTWERK2K6 10 місяців тому

      Super 8 cameras that wre able to record soundfilm where generally a lot more quiet than silentfilm Super 8 cameras. And yes, it also helps to have the microphone further away from the camera and behind the aim-direction of the microphone :) Another benefit of Soundfilm Super 8 cameras is they run a lot more speed stable and are often quarz sync'd which even helps shooting for sound with normal silentfilm super 8 cartridges and an external audiorecorder.
