  • Welcome back to Reserved Investments! This is one of my most important videos on this channel! In this video we discuss and define the differences between flipping, speculating, and investing as well as review some strategies you can employ when investing in antiques or collectibles over the long term. We also review several antique and collectibles markets that are ripe for long term investment.

This is one of your best videos to date, and should be pinned to the top of your channel.
I encourage anyone hoarding modern era collectibles to take just a third of its unrealized value and follow Reserved Investments advice by putting it in an S&P 500 Index Fund… I can almost guarantee within a couple years of watching your Stock Market investment constantly working for you while your Elite Trainer boxes collect dust, you will have a financial mindset paradigm shift.

    5) Buy the dip again
    6) Get frustrated and liquidate everything

Sold off about 95% of my collection across 2021-22. Made a killing. Put most of it in the stock market. Mostly S&P but also spread some across Apple and other big companies.
And I kept all my favorite nintendo games.
    Very happy with the decision.

I’ve watched tons of your videos but for some reason the things you said in the last couple minutes stuck with me. For some reason I thought the idea of dealing with collectibles was to take profits and roll it into other collectibles ad infinitum. But makes sense to reallocate profits or a portion of profits to more reliable long term investments (the market).

Will be interesting to see what happens when the older crowd goes away. Generations are going to change the bellwether here and I have no idea what that looks like.

I flip speculate and invest in real estate. The flipping has been pretty good for short term gains (and taxed highly)
The speculation has been great and somewhat hit or miss
The investing in real estate long term fundamentally by increasing value through improvements has been a game changer, life changer

A lot of people thing flipping is speculation. But really you know the short term after repair value of the house and it’s sort of an arbitrage not speculating that value will just go up due to short term market shift. This is difference between speculation and flipping. Flipping can be more calculated if you know what you’re doing

People often only go after the slightly cheaper ones because the $90 ones are driving the prices up even though no one is paying that much.

No, if they simply bought and held an index fund, they didn't lose a single dime. Always remember, the only people who get hurt on a roller coaster are the ones who jump out of the car while it is moving at breakneck speeds. If you don't sell an index fund when the market is low you don't lose money and the index fund will recover as soon as the market does. This is why indexing is much better than buying individual stocks. Much less risk.

When considering OCG, I have 2 questions: 1) can a collectible (e.g. comics or coins) have more than one OCG where multiple grades trade at a discount to the next grade above it? 2) is there a general rule of thumb as to how much discount (as a %, e.g.) needs to exist between grades to qualify as an OCG? Mickey Mantle cards didn't even go nuts until the later 70's. Plus there's another reason 52 Mantles are so rare. It was included in the high series packs that came out in the late summer/early fall. By then a lot of stores didn't even carry high series as kids were onto football cards by then. Therefore the print run is even lower than the rest of the 52 set. 52 common cards are more valuable too because of this.

I think you should be more specific when talking about an S & P index fund, as some funds are weighted by market capitalization and others are equal weighted. Right now the most popular market capitalization S & P index fund is SPY, and technology stocks make up just under 40% of the fund, and most of that weighting is in the Magnificent Seven stocks, so you’re not really diversified in this ETF. You might as well buy a technology ETF. Also, as you have mentioned you should sell around the top, and technology stocks have been on a fantastic run for years. Perhaps, it’s time to sell or at least trim them back some. However, with SPY you’re stuck with a heavy exposure to technology, as such an equal weighted fund may be a better choice right now.

I actually disagree strongly here. Do a study on the S & P and you will see that literally going back all the way to the mid-1990's, with few exceptions, the S & P was always top heavy in tech (just not as much as today). As such, it really doesn't matter. Any stock based index fund that has large cap stocks in it is going to most likely be heavily weighted in tech unless s of course if it is a non-tech sector fund (i.e. REIT, healthcare, energy, etc.) People have been complaining about valuations for decades now. I remember when Microsoft was selling for around $20 a share after the dot com bubble crashed and people told me it was overvalued. AI is not equatable to what happened during the dot com era, even though the market is very frothy (I'll gladly acknowledge that). Anyone looking to invest for the long term who has 15-20 years or more, should easily consider an S & P index fund in my opinion and the opinion of many others. Could it fall in the short term? Absolutely, but we have been due a recession for years now...that should not affect the buy and hold long term investor in the slightest. Just my two cents.

@@ReservedInvestments Granted the stock market is a different market than Antiques and Collectibles, but doesn’t this go against your basic philosophy of buying things cheap and selling when they are dear? At some point there will be sector rotation out of technology. My guess is a new bull cycle in commodities will take over the top spot, and I think it will happen sooner than later. This is part of an article from J. P. Morgan Asset Management that was published in February, 2024:
‘In 2024, we do not expect a reversal in big tech, but rather a broadening out in market participation due to valuations and profits:
Valuations: In 2023, 68% of S&P 500 returns were attributable to multiple expansion, leaving valuations somewhat rich. The S&P 500, which is market-cap weighted, is about 26% more expensive than its average valuation of 16.2x back since 2009, while the S&P 500 equal weight is only 5% more expensive. From a valuation perspective, there may be more room to run for a broader set of stocks. In addition, profits, which are estimated to grow by nearly 11% in 2024, should be a key determinant of returns this year.
Profits: Last year, the Magnificent 7 essentially drove all the S&P 500’s returns and profit growth, with profits up an estimated 31% in the Magnificent 7 in 2023 compared to profits contracting 4.3% in the rest of the S&P 500. This year, that leadership should broaden out, with 39% of profit growth projected to come from the Magnificent 7 and 61% coming from the rest of the index.’
They also have an interesting chart in the article comparing when the equal weighted S & P index outperformed and when the market weighted
outperformed from 1990 to 2023. It was about equal between the two. A link probably won’t work, but if you Google “J.P. Morgan asset management “Market Cap or Equal Weight” article Meera Pandit” it should come up.
