  • Learn how to make a flowerpot out of cake for Mother's Day with this DIY video tutorial. It contains edible Oreo dirt/soil and chocolate cake with two tone rose cake pops. For the Rose Cake Pop tutorial watch this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyJYa...
It's Mother’s Day next month and I know exactly what I’m making for my mum, although I’m really hoping she hasn’t seen this video yet! This flowerpot cake is so cute and actually not that difficult. You can top your flowerpot with any kind of flowers, but I thought I’d make some more rose cake pops, as they were such a hit earlier this week. This time though I made two-tone roses, which are really eye-catching. Give this a go yourself for mother’s day or valentine’s day or even as a thank you gift for someone.

To make this for yourself you will need:
    For the cake:
♡ 60g/2oz/½ cup dark cocoa powder
    ♡ boiling water
    ♡ 4 large eggs
    ♡ 225g/8oz/2 cups self-raising flour
    ♡ 225g/8oz/1 cup caster sugar
    ♡ 225g/8oz/1 cup salted butter
    ♡ 1½ baking powder
    ♡ 300g/10½oz/1⅓ cups unsalted butter
    ♡ 600g/21oz/4⅔ cups icing/powdered sugar
    ♡ Pink food colouring
    ♡ White fondant
    ♡ Red fondant
    Equipment you will need:
    ♡ Electric mixer
    ♡ Spatula
    ♡ Sieve
    ♡ Mixing bowls
    ♡ 9” round tin
    ♡ 8” by 12” tin
    ♡ Piping bags
    ♡ Petal tip 104
    ♡ Leaf tip 67
    ♡ Cake pop sticks
    ♡ Cake pop stand/polystyrene block
    Method:
    1. Soften the butter and then add the flour sugar and baking powder and mix to combine. Then create a paste by adding boiling water to dark cocoa powder. Add the paste to the mixture. Divide the mixture between your baking tins and bake in a preheated oven at 160°C fan/350°F for 25 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Once baked leave to cool completely.
    2. Whilst the cake is baking in the oven, create the buttercream by softening the butter and then adding the icing sugar in two batched. Then add your vanilla extract and take a spoonful of the buttercream out to dye pink. You will also need to dye a small amount green for the leaves. To learn how to create the rose cake pops, check out my tutorial here www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyJYa....
    3. Cut out three identical circles of cake and fill with buttercream. The left over cake can be used to make your cake pops. Then flip the cake upside down and cover completely with buttercream. Then flip the cake back the right way up and cover with fondant icing. I find it easier to roll fondant out onto baking paper as is doesn’t stick and it’s easier to maneuver. If you like, you can add hearts to your fondant by using a cookie cutter to create red hearts out of fondant and then placing these on your white fondant. Roll the hearts equally in both directions. Cut the fondant to size using a knife, scissors or a pizza cutter. Then cut out another piece of fondant to create the rim around the flowerpot and use a small amount of water to stick this down.
    4. Then crush a packet of Oreos with the filling removed to create the soil. Melt the filling in the microwave for 15 seconds just to make it more spreadable. Then spread the Oreo filling on top of your cake. This will help to stick down your cookie crumbs.
    5. Finally push in your rose cake pops to finish and you’ll have one very happy mother. You can thank me later!

how come you add boiling water to the cocoa powder and then add it to the batter instead of just mixing it with the dry ingredients?

Hello, you get a more intense chocolate flavour out of the same amount of cocoa powder by adding boiling water! ^.^ x
