Regarding your AC, buy a second filter. That way, you only have to turn off the AC for a few seconds to switch filters. Then you can clean the dirty filter at your own pace and use it the next time, rinse repeat👍

that squeak under the hood, it may be the bearing going dry in the belt tensioner or one of the idler pulley bearings. Those items are not expensive, I would change all three of them to be proactive. Make sure the alternator bearing spins freely and seems ok and the Air conditioning clutch bearing needs to be checked too. Any of these parts can be producing that squeak but replacing the cheaper idlers and tensioner device should be done to keep you out of trouble down the road, they will be a source of probable trouble sooner or later so deal with them now so you can be confident of less potential for breakdown.

A quick test to make sure it’s just not the belt… spray a little water on the belt. That water will lubricant the belt. It’ll stop squeaking quickly.

Of course they want to sell you on "rebuildable" shocks...but without a doubt, "normal" shocks such as Bilstein, KYB, Rancho, Monroe, etc...will last you CONSIDERABLY longer. I know it's tough trying to figure who's right and who's wrong amongst all this advice you get. The fancy "rebuildable" shocks are nice for plush operation, but that comes with a price...and you're paying it. BTW...your 4th of July attitude and outfit just straight up rock. You're awesome.

I accidentally left a candle burning in my bathroom of my motor home. It eventually liquified the whole candle and the glass cracked and alloaed it to run out with the wick still burning on the fiberglass counter and lit the bathroom on fire. Fortunately the neighbor saw the smoke and the fire dept. put it out.
I suggest putting the candle in a skillet on the stove just in case. Side benefit is the heat will go out the stove vent so less heat added to the house!

Sarah, You can cover the panes of glass in your windows with Aluminum Foil (shiny reflective side facing out) and that will help to keep the morning sun from heating up the casita. That way your mini-split won't have to work so hard to cool down the interior of your living space. Which should help you a great deal. If you use the foil to reflect the sunlight the black-out curtains won't heat up and as a result they won't retain heat during the day. Take care. sincerely, Dean O. :-I

@@TobyCostaRica - I was talking about something that is cheap that could be put up right away. If she wanted to do what you're talking about she could buy REFLECTIX. But that would take some time and would also be more expensive then buying a simple roll of aluminum foil and tacking it up on the inside of the windows with a little Scotch tape. She's leaving town soon so it would be more cost and time effective to just put up the Aluminum foil right away. If they don't already have the Aluminum Foil it would cost her about five bucks to do the job right away. :-I

Wonderhussy...You need sunscreen screens covering on the outside of your windows. They mount outside and attach to the exterior window frame. I have them and they stop the suns rays outside the house. The hardware stores here will build them if you measure for them. Don't get the black ones. I have beige. You wont need them anywhere under the overhang or where the sun cant shine on your windows. With curtains on the inside, the heat is still getting in and being absorbed by the glass and curtain. The sunscreens will stop a lot of the heat and keep it outside. As for the outside wall by the fence maybe you can build a higher privacy fence to block the sun on the side walls of the casita. And if you have a crawl space over your ceilings and under the roof, you need an exhaust fan to circulate and vent the attic heat outside. Mine went out and it makes a huge difference. Good luck. Stay awesome!! Happy Birthday Merica!😎

The reason is that it is running continuous and the evaporator coil will ice over and block air flow. You need a larger unit that can be set to a reasonable temperature that it will easily meet and cycle on and off so that the evaporator coil can de ice.

Live in Phoenix. Same temps as you all have in Death Valley. To beat the heat I do the following: First and most important I buy my power under the "Peak load" plan. I pay 1/4 the price per kilowatt off peak (in my case 8:00pm to 3:00 pm the following day) and I use very little electricity (lights and computer only) on peak (3:00 pm to 8:00 pm) when the price is 4 times higher. I use a programmable thermostat to turn my air conditioner off and on. I set the temp for 68 degrees when off peak. It cools the house - including floors and walls - down to that temp. (yes I sleep under a blanket at night). When the clock strikes 3:00PM the air goes off. Only the fan runs to circulate the air. At 117 outside it doesn't even start to get uncomfortable inside until 7:30 Pm when it reaches 80 degrees. My high bill in the summer time is just under $200. My air conditioner - which hasn't been serviced in 7 years is 43 years old. (Goettl).
I'm using 2 important principles here. First the principle of Thermal Mass and the second is the principle of reducing on/off cycles for your refrigerated air conditioning. The fewer on/off cycles your equipment goes thru the longer it will last. Because your target temp (68 degrees) and your actual temp at 8:00pm is 10-12 degrees different the air cond will run for a very long time before cycling. That is a GOOD thing and the reason refrigerators last so long. Been doing this for the last 7 years and I am VERY comfortable ALL summer long. I have 1750 sq ft. in a townhouse (i shared wall to the south) and a 1" foam roof. My Air unit runs off 220v.
I hope your utility company has peak load billing options. Good luck.

the temp control on the ac is so it knows when to auto shut off the compressor based on your temp preference. With it being so hot, even if you turn it down to 68 or whatever, it will not actually get any cooler because you are basically maxing out your AC right now. It cannot overcome the size of the room added with the poor insulation and extreme heat outside.

Indeed...when it gets over 100 degrees you're screwed unless you're running an industrial A/C like they do in convenience store chains. Those are big boys. There's nothing she can do about the casita aside from building a shade wall on the west side or building a cover/second roof over the whole thing. I'd bet the house itself has poor attic air circulation...a lot of people don't realize how important that is.

Ignore 99% of the "how to keep the casita cool" advice, you have done everything pretty well and most things that people are recommending have downsides (like getting destroyed in high winds, or turning it into more of a prison, or increasing project/maintenance costs more than just upgrading your AC).
Regarding your existing window AC, getting the temp down to 84 or even 88 with low humidity, really isn't bad. But here are 3 things to help:
    1. If you want it 75 degrees, you simply need an AC with more BTUs. For next year, upsize it and go for super high efficiency while you're at it. Maybe even something like a Fujitsu window heat pump AC. I'd bet that you can get an AC with more BTUs, while at the same time using the same or less electricity.
    2. Don't hesitate to set your thermostat to 68, it won't hurt anything. Even set at 75, the compressor is probably running continuously, so I'm not saying that setting it to 68 will make the casita colder. But it might, if the temp right near the AC gets down to 75 and kicks the compressor off. Running continuously is actually easier on it than having it kick on and off, though it's designed to handle both situations, that is what an AC with a thermostat does.
    3. To increase the BTUs of your existing AC a bit, you can do two things. First, clean any and all aluminum fins and copper pipes you can get at. Spraying water from a spray bottle to get dust off them will help more than you think. Second, if you have access to the hot coils/fins from outdoors, if you can set up a little water mister onto them, that boosts the BTUs of cooling quite a bit. I realize that water may be too precious in your location to do that. But if you can spare a gallon per hour, even just at the peak afternoon hours, it will help until you can get a bigger AC.
Misting the hot coils of an AC cools the coils with evaporative cooling somewhat like a swamp cooler, but is superior to a swamp cooler. The swamp cooler evaporates the water into the indoor air, creating humidity/condensation problems. Misting exterior AC coils evaporates water into the outdoor air, just cooling the metal coils rather than cooling the air it's evaporating into. Adjust the amount of misting water until it's not making much more water drip out of the AC outdoors, than it already does. If no water drips already, then you're already getting some benefit of condensed water on the cold side somehow being evaporated on the hot side.

This might sound kinda cheesy, but plant some mulberry trees around the back side of the Casita. They grow fast and in a couple years depending on the size they were when you planted them, they will shade the casita completly. They dont tequire lots of water either. Bonus is the yummy fruit you get frim them. Unless you get a male then it will just flower. Either way you get lots of shade drom a tree that can take the heat.
