Russel was based off Lazlo

Originally, Russel was called Lazlo, in reference to the brief character 'Lazlo' in the Half Life 2's chapter, 'Sandtraps'.
During development, the character went through drastic differences, like changes to his voice and name. I believe that they changed the name from Lazlo to Russel to differentiate the two characters. If we knew that Russel was going to die off much like Lazlo in HL2, there wouldn't be much of a point to grow an emotional attachment with the character through gameplay.
