    The steering box adjustments you mentioned is the same for older Land Rovers. That 1/8 of a turn and lock it down is definitely spot on!

    YJ, the battery is passenger side firewall, airbox is in about the same position. The nice thing about an old YJ is that you get lots of practice rebuilding the vehicle bolt-by-bolt over the course of about 5 years. Mine will be new again in say, 18-24 months.

    Man, thank you so much!!!!! All in all, 3 or 4 adjustments (I’d say almost about 1/4 turn) I don’t want to go too tight. Might try another adjust in a couple weeks. Once again, thank you!

  • @natemasterson1727
    @natemasterson1727 3 роки тому +50

    My ZJ took about 3/4 of a full turn. It also makes it a lot easier to keep track of the adjustment if you put a little dot on the allen adjuster and also on the box itself with a paint pen to keep track of where you started and where you're clocked to after adjustment.

      Followed this advice and video. Have already adjusted a 1\2 turn. Still feels a little sloppy to me but I'm afraid to go any further. Curious after 2y if the 3\4 turn @natemasterson1727 made ever caused any issues. Still going strong?

    • @natemasterson1727
      @natemasterson1727 Рік тому

      @@Joespower I daily my XJ now but I did back the ZJ off MAYBE 1/8 of a turn. Just to fine tune it. Still going strong with that though, no binding feeling and no slop beyond what the 1 ton UTK kit has inherently with drag link roll. The box was on 200k miles with no adjustment ever before that that I could tell, and I’d definitely say mine is a fringe case.
      If you’re going over 1/2 turn, I would do 1/8 turn increments from there IF that to make sure there’s no binding. But you may have other slop at play outside of the box itself, and doing a full inspection of the system from firewall to ground should be done to rule any of that out. I at first thought the I joints on the linkage from firewall to box were worn causing some slop but they were still tight when I inspected them.

    Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge! 98 ZJ I6 4.0 here, I have to try that, neat tip. I've replaced the wheel hubs, axles, new tires, tie rod ends, front sway bar bushings, front diff oil & gasket, steering damper. I did notice that it drove just a little bit better after each of those components was changed but it is all total markedly better than when I first got this jeep. Next up is the front upper & lower control arms and ball joints. Thanksgiving morning I replaced the harmonic balancer (it delaminated), interesting job for me as I had never removed a radiator before. What a mess! Yup, gotta replace that soon and update the transmission cooling lines, too. And I haven't even touched the cosmetics yet...headliner is shot, carpet is crap but each and every area needs TLC and will serve as a learning for the next jeep. I'm gonna get that sweater!

    Don’t forget the bushing adjustment on the input shaft side. It is more likely that the play can be corrected there. Also, take a sawzall and cut off the u joint splined coupling on the steering shaft and replace it with a new set-screw type from Borgeson or other quality manufacturer. The play in the steering of my ‘01 XJ was actually due to slop in the splines of the u joint coupling on the input shaft. Check it out!

    Great advice man! I was gonna do this on a friend's lightly used 07 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Just popped on to make sure I was on the right track. It only has 83k on it so the steering box was my first suspicion. I can't imagine it's tie rod ends or anything more major with such light use. But those steering boxes are notorious from being a bit on the looser side from the factory. Even only at 83k on the clock it could just need a little tweak. I'll likely start on the lesser side of adjustment just to be safe.

    That adjustment is for removing play between the gears in (sector and worm) the steering box. It should be done with the steering box at the high point (centered) easiest way to check for play is to pull down on the pitman arm and then hit the end of the sector shaft up with the palm of your hand, you will hear it click if there is play. If so adjust the screw down just until that play goes away. If you over adjust your steering won't go boom, but it will be too tight and steer even worse.
    Another huge source of play in those boxes is side play in the sector shaft needle bearing at the bottom end of the shaft. Best to replace that.

      My 96 ZJ was bulletproof, the 4L I6, and quadra-trac went everywhere I pointed it...it was offroad more than it was on the highway, sold it with 232k on it, drivers seat was all torn up from wear, and the viscous coupler in the transfer case was completely shot. I still see the current owner driving it occasionally. Last I knew it was very close to 500k on it, the current owner replaced the transfer case, its now selec-trac, and he pulled seat covers out of a wrecked ZJ. If I had known back then what I know now about the transfer case swap and how to replace the seat covers I'd probably still be driving that ZJ. My 98 ZJ was a box of problems sadly, and 2 weeks after the head gasket issue and $1200 the transmission decided to puke fluid all over my carport. So I ended up trading it in on a 2008 Ford Explorer 4.6L V8 Eddie Bauer edition...so far its a great rig....but I will someday have another Jeep, just not sure what yet, possibly an XJ (you know how customizable they are, I'd love to build a trail rig not major offroad rock crawling but something I can just take to the hills and go anywhere I want). I do like the ZJ and WJ, but would love an XJ or even an MJ. Not a Wrangler fan, I want to be able to daily drive it as well, and the Wrangler is out of the question for practicality purposes they are NOT highway vehicles LOL
      My 98 ZJ drove completely different than my 96 ZJ. The 98 had U-Joints up front, the 96 had CV axles....you wouldn't think they'd be that much different on the highway but they were. I loved the limited slip in my 98 ZJ with the selec-trac though, great in the snow....the 96 ZJ with quadra-trac was awesome in the snow, but not nearly as fun as the selec-trac in 2WD with the limited slip LOL.

    “ Temper your expectations “
    I’ve found over the years to have LOWERED EXPECTATIONS. That way when things go as planned or better than life’s great. When life takes a shit oh well I kind of expected it would any ways. Many of us have done repairs that just didn’t meet expectations. Modifications that were just as bad or worse than the junk I started with.

    I bought a 2000 xj from auction and omg so far what a nightmare. So far I welded in a new coil spring perch on driver's side. Then realized leaf spring shackles were both broken. While putting them in I noticed that 1 of the leaf springs has a couple leafs broken. And on the driver's side the U bolts someone used too short of u bolts and figured it was ok. Only one side of the u is sticking through to get nuts on it on both off them I really hope this makes sense. Which is causing the whole rear diff to move....smh. also I can turn the wheel about 90° and still drive straight at times. This thing is all over, wheel hop, feels like rims are bent driving. It's amazing what they let go through the auction. So know I have to put new leaf springs, shocks all around, control arms and everything else u mentioned in here. Thankfully I am mechanically inclined and parts are not extremely expensive. Compared to my audi that someone just totalled on me the parts are actually extremely cheap...lol. When it rains it pours.

    I may have to try this on my Bronco 2, steering is a little sloppy in it still after the front end rebuild. This might just take the rest of the slop out of it or at least make it less noticeable. It is nowhere near as bad as when I first got it where it took quite a bit of steering wheel movement to get the thing to actually turn or keep it in its own lane of traffic LOL. Yeah it was a bit worn out at every single ball joint, and stabilizer bar bushings were all well not there.

Out of fear I turned it back a quarter turn. Performance improved a little, but with all my research online it seems like you also want to tighten the top collar first and you need a spanner wrench or some other hack to do that. Very leery of messing with it. Steering wheel is also crooked so been meaning to fix that one too.

      I used to drive an old p30 '84 Chevy. I think slop was just a normal trait of those step vans because of the steering geometry. It was a good old truck though. I wish I still had it because it was purchased by my father at a government auction in the 90's and was previously owned by NASA. It had the all aluminum body and was used to transport things to the launch pads. It had a plaque glued to the dashboard that said it was approved by NASA for launch transport at Cape Canaveral. I haven't ever seen another plaque like it online anywhere. Sadly my dad traded it in for a fuso around 03. When he bought it, it was over 10 years old but only had like 2k miles on it. The original engine threw a rod just before I took over driving it in 2000 because the driver wasn't checking the oil and ran it dry. I was 16 years old and drove it every weekday for 3 years after that delivering furniture. I was happy for the upgrade to the fuso though as it was far bigger and had air conditioning but I still miss that old step van.

A have a little bit of play on the steering but not much thinking giving it a small turn but scared to do it as you said that you can bugger things up. I am lucky to see your video on this because many times i have thought to tighten it up but did not otherwise i would have bugger it up

    I changed all the suspension and steering parts except the control arms on my 02 4.0l GC, ever time I hit a sewer cap or bump on the freeway the wobble comes and goes out, when I’m in a turn on the freeway and hit a bump it doesn’t wobble. Any suggestions

    Doug would hitting a nasty pot hole cause the gear box to loosen up like that? It happened to me and I adjusted it and its fine now but it freaked me out when the steering got sloppy all of a sudden. The steering felt "pre-death wobble" if that makes sense. I've had full blown dw before and I know what it feels like when its coming....but its fine now
    Thanks

    2007 JK: I've done this with a newly installed (I believe brand new) gear box. It is almost to the point of fatal error. I know the adjustment is too tight because the wheels don't self-straighten when coming out of a turn. It did not fix any of the slop in the steering. Any suggestions on what else could cause the play in the gearbox input shaft?

    Doug! Romex? LOL. Love the advice. Tightening up the steering on an old vehicle can make a world of difference. I recently refreshed all the steering components on my '04 WJ (240K miles) and she drives like it just came off the lot! Engine mounts took care of the low idle vibrations and I was able to convince my wife that we didn't need a new car yet, lol.

    So i replaced tie rod ends, ball joints steering damper, lower and upper comtrol arms, sway bar end links, and put a remanufactured steering box in my wj. Still feels like i have very little control from the wheel. It follows any undulations in the road, bump steer, feels like a boat would handle better. Also has new tires, front hub assemblies, cv axles, rear wheel bearings, pads and rotors. I don't think that adjustment is gonna help me. Basically every steering and suspension part has been replaces other than the socks and springs. Any ideas??

    I just did all the bushings and tie rod ends everything front end and was greeted by 3 inches of slop on my first test drive beating on the pitman arm to get all the old stuff off probably knocked some of my jersey shore rust free it took about half a turn and it's good as new I was worried I might have made it too tight but there's no tight spots in the steering lock to lock and virtually 0 slop anymore
