same. everyone always calls my collection creepy and says how much they dislike them. I get not everyone is gonna like them, but it just makes me feel bad.
the fact that TSR and other modding sites for many other games dont pre screen or scan a lot of files for viruses or bugs means something like this was eventually going to happen
I was just thinking about this the I ther day. I feel really bad for the creater/modder. The guilt they must feel after they realized what had happened to the point where they felt the need to disappear. Hope theyre doing fine whereever they are.
I was hoping you'd make a vid on this because I looked for Sims creepypasta for spooky month and this topic came up. That was like 2 weeks ago. The deep dive is much appreciated
Oh hey, this. I remember! The girl doll was a Sims 2 custom content conversion by someone who had no idea the devastation she was about to release upon the simming world. She was asked to make the doll for Sims 3 and so she did.. and like you said, she uploaded the wrong version. The doll wasn't really a virus, it was just broken code. Really broken corrupted code. Because of people in the community, the file was identified and there was even a cleaner program to remove it from your game. It lead to a "don't trust the exchange" attitude in the community and forums where people uploaded clean builds, checked by admins. No one wanted this thing in their game.. and it's still out there because of how it works so if you play Sims 3, watch what you D/L. Thankfully we do know how to remove the doll so if you do end up with it, the solution is easy to find. Also backup your game files before adding any CC. Always.
Stuff like this was the reason I refused to ever use CC in The Sims 3. I was so terrified of losing everything I had done/created. Now in the Sims 4 i'm pretty much the opposite as my sims are pretty much drowning in CC lol.
Yes! I knew there were glitchy CC coming into exchange items but I was too young to pinpoint how to get rid of them/what items they came from and I never googled it but I did realize problems were coming from the exchange so I REFUSED to use the exchange in Sims 3 lol
Ehhh, I like my Sims but I'm not going to freak out if I have to remake or delete them. Thats the game after all! I would just delete everything and start over if I couldn't figure it out.
@@BengtBagels This comment just made my day fr, you cracked me up! Don't worry, I'm a nice clown... The worst I can do is embarass you with my sense of humor. I hope you had a nice night/morning of sleep with no nightmares hehe
it sounds like the mesh itself was corrupted while the creator was trying to save/export it with the third party program being used like nifskope, which does stuff like this a lot when you make skyrim content. your computer would freak out trying to properly load and render it and apply any normalmaps or textures to it and end up not being able to render it in-game at all while still struggling desperately to do so because sims 3 doesnt have failsafes for this kind of thing. I think i'm confused though. the main thing it did was lag the game and potentially break save files that tried to pack a corrupted mesh into the save? That's it? And it could be removed safely once the specific file was found? and that's what was freaking people out so horribly and making them have really unkind backlash to the creator? to me it seems like a massive overreaction. my own personal experience with modding might be biasing me though.
Idk if you played many games around that time, but the view on CC, viruses in general and shared content was much different at that time. Now most people who have a computer have antivirus software and have much higher knowledge of how the internet works and ways to safely browse or download. As someone who was affected by this doll, it was truely scary not knowing what was happening. In hindsight, it's not that big of a deal because we know what happened and how to fix it but at the time, we didn't know why it was happening. If you saved any saved game while the file was in your game, it was often corrupted due to it attaching to other random cc or noncc items, destroying legacy saves and hours/days of save data. When it was discovered that it was a virus-like item, there was also the fear that it was an actual computer virus (like I said, a lot of people didn't have antivirus or had a bare minimum firewall). This was just after the time of viruses like smile, netsky, bifrost and the mass cyber attacks in the US and North Korea. Today most people don't spend much time thinking about viruses but at that time, many people were very fearful of viruses. I laugh now thinking about how scared we all were because it really does sound a little silly but we were genuinely terrified
@@casi1000 i did and was, i still have a lot of my physical sims 1 cds somewhere around here. i think you helped me understand a whole lot better, so thank you. I was tinkering around with computers and even reformatting my hd regularly pretty early on - especially since even when you weren't on the internet a lot, you still had to worry about viruses from the underground 'circulate the tapes' community because not everyone was honest - so it seems the extra exposure i was lucky enough to get diminished how scary those things were to me and led to me not parsing what was scary about the doll. thank you for helping me have better empathy for others
One thing that kinda adds to that theory is that the doll looks like it was originally from the sims 2. I wouldn't be surprised if the makers tried to just convert the old mesh to work with the sims 3 but it didn't work. They found a way to convert it but used the wrong file when uploading.
i think something else that made it worse was how it could appear from ANYTHING. the exchange was notorious for downloading files that u didnt want, so it spread like wildfire because the exchange couldnt just deactivate the doll cc link and have it be gone forever
My first experience with mods/cc was with the sims 4 so I had no idea this was a thing back in the day! Kind of crazy how a small piece of cc could complete make your game unplayable. I do feel very bad for the creator though, it seems like it was an honest mistake and they got all of this hate thrown at them
It disturbs me, but doesn't surprise me, that the game and the Exchange both had so few guardrails that a piece of custom content could not only corrupt the whole game, but also spread silently through exchange downloads.
4:10, from what I remembered, the Sims 4 did a twitter post talking about a bug fix that banned a specific mod attachment, to that one Sims 4 sex mod, that made it so that you can "do things" with minors. I remember watching that announcement on Pixelade's channel but I forgot the title.
Not gonna lie, Sims without CC would not be Sims for me. Maxis is just too cheap with their pack sizes ... So, as someone once said, there are no mistakes, only happy little accidents
I remember hearing about this for the first time about a year ago. It's terrifying how the doll just creeped up out of nowhere and spread like wildfire. ;-;
I remember having it in my game without ever actually downloading it, it just kind of appeared one day and I was like ‘huh, it must’ve been part of some CC I downloaded’ - soooo creepy how it attached itself to other downloads!
My mom was suuuper into CC for TS3 and this doll drove me crazy!!! I remember trying to place it in cribs and my game immediately crashing, so I gave up on it. It really creeped me out once I realized it was the doll crashing the game.
I never used the exchange because 1. I preferred building my own houses and 2. I had a... less than legal... copy of the game at the time, but I did use a lot of CC. Fortunately I don't think I ever downloaded this doll because I avoided TSR as much as possible 😂
The worst cc I had were these long boots that all my babies/toddlers/children would end up wearing and stretch them out. Super terrifying and I could never find the cc in my files.
Just imagine uploading CC and two months later you realize you uploaded a corrupted file and broke so many people's games. I would feel so bad, I'd want to disappear from the face of the Earth.
When I was little, my mum used to dress me up like a doll -- curl my hair, ridiculous lace sleeves, the whole shebang -- and, to top it off, she also collected the porcelain dolls. And they lived in my closet. The glass eyes! So many glass eyes!
I feel silly for admitting this but when I was little the centaur cc legitimately made it hard for me to sleep at night. I didn't get it, never did, I never even touched any cc websites or the sims exchange, not even before I heard of it. I don't remember where I heard it, most likely youtube. I thought the disgusting disfigured centaur monsters were scary and was afraid they'd kill me lol
I never played Sims 3, but this reminded me that once I downloaded some CC for Sims 2 that (intentionally or otherwise) bugged my game so that every sim was constantly trying to do friendly hugs with every other sim. It was funny but horrifying at the same time, because they would stop doing other actions to go and hug random people nearby, but because most of the sims didn't already know each other, the hugs would often get rejected and they'd lose relationship, so it quickly spiralled out of control. Good times.
it’s been quite a while since I’ve watched one of Plumbella’s videos and I gotta say this mic is really good lol the audio quality is the first thing I noticed, I don’t know when she changed mics, and the one she used before was also really good but this one is just **chefs kiss**
OMG i remember being so scared of this, looking back it's kind of hilarious how it was actually just an accident and yet it spread so much fear around the community
I've never had that doll in my game, but I always end up with those boots and that centaur outfit and it's driving me absolutely insane when I have a toddler in my household and the whole screen glitches out
Love these episodes about the like back end of the sims. I’d love an episode about the way cc/mods have been shared over time and how they’ve been handled by the sims team. Keep being amazing Jesse!
I had a pair of glitchy high heel boots that would apply to all ages, all genders, all outfits. Including babies and nice outfits. Stunning, yet terrifying
I'm so fuckin glad I only ever heard about this thing AFTER I started downloading Sims 3 CC, bc this kind of thing was literally *exactly* what I was afraid of back when I played vanilla, lmao
I just got her and found out I had her from CC Magic when I tried rebuilding it said "Deleted Corrupt Package: Doll Dressed: Causes crash to desktop" and it said "rebuild complete" after that but it would say that everytime I rebuild and it would never actually get deleted, the game worked fine and everything too. When I was looking for a way to remove her I literally couldn't find the file anywhere until I saw of a forum that one guy got her from the tattoo section on the exchange and I recently just downloaded some tattoos so I deleted all of them and now shes gone.
Idk as far as CC goes, but the Sims team did release a statement about a pedophilic/bestiality mod that they said they would ban anyone found to have downloaded/used in their game
I had 150+ Victorian style porcelain dolls growing up. Been slowly sneaking them into my married home over the last 2 years. I had 5 of my favourite childhood dolls when I got married 6 years ago. I now have 20 dolls in the house. My husband hasn't noticed.
I remember hearing about this back in the day and it scared me so badly even though I didn’t have the Sims 3 that to this day I almost never use CC for that game, the only piece I have is some Hawaiian Lei I downloaded. It’s honestly crazy and terrifying how it spread so fast, infecting so much of the exchange, and the fact that it was invisible and would infect your uploads, and the fact that it all happened unintentionally makes it all the more shocking. I’ve heard it got all sorted out in the end and all corrupt content was removed but I’m still too scared to download anything most of the time.
haven't watched the video yet but saw the thumbnail and am already excited. Hunting down that awful thing anytime I downloaded content from tsr was always chaos.
I'm gonna drop a controversial opinion, this stuff only happened bc the Sims player base (outside of modders ofc) are some of the most technologically inept group of gamers out there. It's 2021 and people still ask the most ridiculous questions on Sims 4 streams and treat simple texture recolors like dark magic. I can't imagine something like this happening on this scale with like, GTA mods or something. The moment someone's game would be bugging they'd go through every piece of CC and check it instead of spreading panic and telling people not to download any CC ever LMAO
I can't speak for people now but back then viruses were viewed very differently and people were already wary from the cyber attacks. That combined with the audience being much younger and the hours of gameplay you could potentially lose due to the corruption made for some easily spread hysteria. Try not to compare the maturity of them to mostly adults too hard😅
I also collected creepy porcelain dolls as a little girl; they're in a big storage bin in my parent's basement...on the bright side their ringlets still bounce so *chef's kisses*
You should totally do one of these videos on those awful thigh high boots that made babies and toddlers look like monsters and were hard to find and remove.
i never got hit by the doll as far as I know, but I got those broken centaur CCs stuck in my game and there was a women's shirt with a screenshot of a female sim's face on it. Also had a set of hooker boots that were pretty broken too? all three of them would absolutely ruin the models of babies, toddlers, and children (and maybe teens? i don't remember) but from my experience, it was nothing worse than that. i've still got no clue what content they snuck in on, because i deleted all of my cc at some point and they were still in the game im sure theres more broken cc i had that i just dont remember too lmao
It's crazy I never heard about it until yesterday when I saw a comment on a different sims 3 video where someone said they are scared of downloading cc because of the creepy doll and today you upload this
Seeing this reminds me off those damn boots you would get from the exchange if you downloaded sims, it made your sim babies either go insible or into this just skin coloured mass that would flash across your screen. (Would love to see an episode on those by the way!!)
i cant confirm i downloaded the doll virus, but around this time i had the load screen turn into a baby face texture with no eyes and i fully-reinstalled because i thought my game was haunted.

@kirakira my mom has collected porcelain dolls an holiday barbies all my life. She just moved into an apartment and currently has them set up in a storage locker. I'd love to see someone's face if the broke in to see shelves of dolls staring into their soul.
Blame it on cliches
Look up the explanation of uncanny valley. It explains why people find 'human looking' things creepy
same. everyone always calls my collection creepy and says how much they dislike them. I get not everyone is gonna like them, but it just makes me feel bad.
the fact that TSR and other modding sites for many other games dont pre screen or scan a lot of files for viruses or bugs means something like this was eventually going to happen
Tsr does screen cc now haha (not sure about at the time) but tbf I don't think a screening would have caught this considering how silently it spread
AHH POSSIBLY THE MOST ICONIC HACK/GLITCH IN GAMING HISTORY SO GLAD YOU COVER IT
me *looking at my collection of eyeless dolls*: ya'll would never do that to me right
I was just thinking about this the I ther day. I feel really bad for the creater/modder. The guilt they must feel after they realized what had happened to the point where they felt the need to disappear. Hope theyre doing fine whereever they are.
As of March this year, they're still modding. They make mostly tuning and object mods for sims 4 and sims 2, but seem to have moved away from Sims 3.
I was hoping you'd make a vid on this because I looked for Sims creepypasta for spooky month and this topic came up. That was like 2 weeks ago. The deep dive is much appreciated
I fell out with porcelain dolls when my sister's shelf full of them fell on me when I was younger 😂😂 all I did was sit under it
Did it happen often?
@@angelicgalaxy4534 no just the once 😂 the shelf never went up again after that
Oh hey, this.
Nah CC in Sims 3 is fine. I have 12gb worth of them lol
Ehhh, I like my Sims but I'm not going to freak out if I have to remake or delete them. Thats the game after all! I would just delete everything and start over if I couldn't figure it out.
i dont use cc in the sims 3 mostly because the game is already perfect imo
ive had some minor glitches with sims 4 cc (eg. one shirt that caused every texture to freak out once i put it on) but overall same lol
I love how you say “film” like it’s two syllables.
Editing to add that I mean that as a genuine compliment 💜✨ I think it’s really cute ^^
This makes a lot of sense as to why CC doesn't automatically download when you download other people's creations now
I'm SO pleased with how well structured and organized this video is... also the editing is perfect
@@BengtBagels This comment just made my day fr, you cracked me up! Don't worry, I'm a nice clown... The worst I can do is embarass you with my sense of humor. I hope you had a nice night/morning of sleep with no nightmares hehe
4:39 ah that's how you read that
UA-cam's close captioning has been doin its damn thing recently... the fact that it got "citalopram" in Jesse's accent, truly simtastic babes
it sounds like the mesh itself was corrupted while the creator was trying to save/export it with the third party program being used like nifskope, which does stuff like this a lot when you make skyrim content. your computer would freak out trying to properly load and render it and apply any normalmaps or textures to it and end up not being able to render it in-game at all while still struggling desperately to do so because sims 3 doesnt have failsafes for this kind of thing.
Can you do the story of those super annoying boots that ruined so many sims 3 babies?
4:10, from what I remembered, the Sims 4 did a twitter post talking about a bug fix that banned a specific mod attachment, to that one Sims 4 sex mod, that made it so that you can "do things" with minors. I remember watching that announcement on Pixelade's channel but I forgot the title.
Not gonna lie, Sims without CC would not be Sims for me. Maxis is just too cheap with their pack sizes ...
So, as someone once said, there are no mistakes, only happy little accidents
I believe that was Bob Ross
I remember hearing about this for the first time about a year ago. It's terrifying how the doll just creeped up out of nowhere and spread like wildfire. ;-;
I love everyone in the comments bringing back the haunted hooker boots as a solid cc feature that managed the sneak in everywhere 😂
This story sounds like a creepypasta lol
When I was little, my mum used to dress me up like a doll -- curl my hair, ridiculous lace sleeves, the whole shebang -- and, to top it off, she also collected the porcelain dolls. And they lived in my closet. The glass eyes! So many glass eyes!
is this the berries and cream little lad’s back story
@@star-po3gb 👀💦
This sounds like a horror villain origin story. Hope you are alright.
Good times.
I don't even play The Sims anymore but Plumbella's videos are such a joy to watch!
it’s been quite a while since I’ve watched one of Plumbella’s videos and I gotta say this mic is really good lol the audio quality is the first thing I noticed, I don’t know when she changed mics, and the one she used before was also really good but this one is just **chefs kiss**
The Nikki from Big Brother soundbite took me right back to that time 😂
i remember seeing that doll banner as a kid and being so inexplicably scared even though i had no idea what was going on😂
same it unlocked a core memory lmfao
OMG i remember being so scared of this, looking back it's kind of hilarious how it was actually just an accident and yet it spread so much fear around the community
of all the things the glitched CC could've been it was a creepy doll! I love plumbella's entire history of series so much
jesse standing up for digimon in this day and age is what i needed thank u for my life
This is basically a sims 3 version of “wash your hands and wear a mask” 😂
i just know she would have the craziest beef with azealia banks
LMFAO
“Going to the pictures aren’t we?” Sent me to the floooooor
Sim Tower sound effect @5:28 was glorious!
the doll was like syphilis lmao
I had 150+ Victorian style porcelain dolls growing up. Been slowly sneaking them into my married home over the last 2 years. I had 5 of my favourite childhood dolls when I got married 6 years ago. I now have 20 dolls in the house. My husband hasn't noticed.
Really The Sims answer to a virtual corona virus
Hunting down that awful thing anytime I downloaded content from tsr was always chaos.
just realized that the reason my dad has been so against cc was bc of this omg
1:28 STOPPPPP BIG BROTHER OH MY GOODNESS JESSE I HAVENT THOUGHT ABOUT THAT QUOTE FOR YEARS
I'm gonna drop a controversial opinion, this stuff only happened bc the Sims player base (outside of modders ofc) are some of the most technologically inept group of gamers out there.
You should totally do one of these videos on those awful thigh high boots that made babies and toddlers look like monsters and were hard to find and remove.
omg WHAT 💀
i never got hit by the doll as far as I know, but I got those broken centaur CCs stuck in my game and there was a women's shirt with a screenshot of a female sim's face on it. Also had a set of hooker boots that were pretty broken too? all three of them would absolutely ruin the models of babies, toddlers, and children (and maybe teens? i don't remember) but from my experience, it was nothing worse than that. i've still got no clue what content they snuck in on, because i deleted all of my cc at some point and they were still in the game
im sure theres more broken cc i had that i just dont remember too lmao
I love the added detail to saying California Gurls was topping the charts
All in favor of the sims team making this a real object in the sims 4 (minus the corruption and such)
But make it a haunted doll and not tell us 😂 I'd love the surprise
I was really hoping they'd make a joke about it with the creepy doll that came with the Paranormal Stuff Pack.
Then again, if your Sims 3 game is lagging, it might just be Island Paradise. *shudder*
I used to collect the big porcelain dolls when I was younger... now they live in the basement.
dont make them sad...
They're hungry... Feed them...
It's crazy I never heard about it until yesterday when I saw a comment on a different sims 3 video where someone said they are scared of downloading cc because of the creepy doll and today you upload this
I accidentally downloaded like 2 months ago, I had to delete my entire mods folder because I didn’t know how to remove it
Seeing this reminds me off those damn boots you would get from the exchange if you downloaded sims, it made your sim babies either go insible or into this just skin coloured mass that would flash across your screen. (Would love to see an episode on those by the way!!)
i cant confirm i downloaded the doll virus, but around this time i had the load screen turn into a baby face texture with no eyes and i fully-reinstalled because i thought my game was haunted.
Holy shit I’d cry

my favorite story to come out of the sims franchise. love her so much
I’m loving these sims community stories videos!
This just completely justified my fear for the internet and downloadable content when I was a child. I feel validated.
. . .not gonna lie, I too kinda love that the evil broken CC was a creepy doll. XD Makes me glad I skipped that generation of the game! Though I should probably run my Sims 4 custom content through Sims 4 Studio again, just in case. . .
I would love to see more Entire History Of episodes about community happenings like this! I feel like I never know about them until years later. I first heard of this doll maybe a year ago, because I don't think I ever downloaded from the exchange and visited the official forums very rarely.
Not me getting physically excited at the mention of digimon in the year 2021 just like it was 2003. Bless you.
My game always had those horrible cc hooker boots that were black but also brown and white which would glitch my sims and baby sims, but they wouldn’t show up in my files
I remember having the doll, the centaur and the broken boots once haha
That poor woman. Imagine accidentally creating a piece of CC so fucked up it becomes an invisible game-destroying virus and scares the shit out of hundreds of 10 year olds, and having THAT be your legacy as a CC creator despite your many positive contributions to the community.
I legally require the baby doll Kanye edit at the start
It would be cool if you did a video of Knut Futa, who is a dead sim in the sims 2, if you resurrect him he comes back…well interesting maybe a bit creepy to say the least. You should definitely it if you don’t know. Hope you’re having an amazing day! 💜
the music. the intrigue. im hooked.
refuse to believe this doll isnt actually just haunted
