The spanish chicane looks more dangerous then having nothing there. Small margin of error and if you hit them tyres they’ll go flying in every direction.
not the same, tho, as in indy, one manufacturer had a technical limitation, while the other didn't. Bridgestone tyres could do it, so why would they accept a change that limits their chances? I don't agree with how the whole thing played out, but they had a point...
Teams were going to get together and run the race anyway without FIA sanction since it violated a bunch of FIA rules to change the track after qualifying. A lot of politics happened. FIA realized they didnt want the teams organizing their own demonstration races because it would make them completely irrelevant, teams woudl realize they didnt need the FIA. So they shut it down. It's actually a very interesting, complex story, with most parties just agreeing to forfeit the points, money, race, whatever just to put on a show.
Not once qualifying and practices had happened; there was no opportunity to practice that proposed chicane before the race-and as has been pointed out only Michelin tires had the problem, and both on one team. (Oddly, at Le Mans it was cars with Michelin tires that also had problems; at least three times cars came to the bottom of the Mulsanne straight with flat tires while leading.)
Should also point out that it wasn't just Senna's death that motivated these changes. Roland Ratzenberger's death and Karl Wendlinger's near fatal crash at Monaco also motivated changes to the tracks and improved car safety.
I think Abbey change could be done because Lamy had crash in tests (Silverstone) which could end his carrier (broke his both legs). Also, JJ Lehto was injured in pre-season testing and Montermini was injured in Spain, which had chicane, but not on finish straight. Oh, and Alesi was also injured in testing.
RetardRay estoril unfortunately has been neutered of its character. The turn 1-2 combo has been ruined and that chicane kills the flow big time. It’s still there for track days in a limited running though.
So I do think Eau Rouge looks horrendous but I think as a corner on its own and not a modified Eau Rouge, it does look quite nice and I like it. I'd still pick an Eau Rouge typical version any day
There’s a section at Eau Rouge that goes even farther back than what’s shown here; if you look at a satellite image of Eau Rouge there’s a section that was used for a number of years, behind the present day stands.
A new Eau Rouge which were kind of "in between" the 1994 version and the traditional version could be interesting. Nowadays, the F1 cars have so much downforce that it's not a corner, it's just taken flat out. A narrower corner would bring back the challenge, while reducing speeds at what is still a dangerous corner if something goes wrong.
This is pretty unknown, but the chicane at estoril was made in 1993 for Superbikes and F1 raced in the normal layout. After Senna's death they decided to use the horrible chicane
On Silverstone we didn't talk about the Stowe and the Copse being almost a 90 degree corner and on the complex being slowed and how the entire circuit was ruined
yeah, they tightened the 1st corner in Hockenheim and made the 3rd chicane tighter as well (although that coul´ve been already 93). Monza had Curva Grande pushed inwards and the Lesmo 2 was made slower (which was horrible, as the flatout Lesmo 2 gave a good run towards Ascari). Not sure if they changed the chicane after Curva Grande in 94 or 95 (pulled the chicane sooner to give bigger run-offs), but for sure they pushed the Lesmo´s further in in 95 to make bigger run-offs. But people have to remember that tracks evolved before this too. Silverstone had some slower corners added in the 80s and early 90s (the luffield section added, the maggots-beckets complex, the chicane after Stowe), the Hockenheimring kept adding and changing the chicanes, Monza added chicanes over time, Interlagos was made shorter and slower for the 90s (although was still a kick-ass track even with the changes) and Montreal had had a few changes as well in the 80s.
I hated the Portugal chicane. No overtaking opportunity. Just ruined the flow of the circuit. Tanque was where Cafi broke his leg in 1990 but couldn't they have moved barrier back and add sand traps??
There’s houses and such directly behind Tanque so no. What they didn’t have to do was create such a tight chicane. I suspect they did try to create an overtaking opportunity as it’s very wide compared to much of the rest of Estoril, but they didn’t do a good job.
If you look at the track on google maps. There’s actually room to add run off just as the bend at Tanque starts. However next to it there’s houses close by.
The changes made at Spain were idiotic. Others were acceptable to a certain extent (Silverstone and Monza), Spa and Estoril was questionable, but for Estoril, it did make for a slightly "longer" lap.. Spain? Those tire chicanes looked absolutely safe😂😂😂..
@@williammaurice7206 Not representative: Barrichello Crash was at Variante Bassa. If you wanna take an example, use Berger 1989: he crashed at Tamburello, the car took fire, but he survived. Please also note two things: 1- There was a reason for the wall outside Tamburello. Originally the track was a road circuit, and the Tamburello corner was made near Santerno river, so no place for run off area. Following the example of american speedway, the wall at that time was considered a safer option. 2- What killed Senna was not the impact against the wall, but a suspension part that pierced his helmet. The root cause for Senna death was more in the cars, and much less than you can think on the track.
Spa Chicane is dangerous, you heading to wall, plus you have turn. then once you get to the top you can lose traction, and lose control, at high speed. I've lost it few times in a simulator. It's also very important you have enough wing. The problem is people play with the wing because spa is such fast circuit the less the better, but more dangerous at that chicane.
Like all safety incidents, they will probably change it when there is crash number 2 or 3. Just look at Imola, Berger, Piquet crashed into wall before senna, only after senna lost his life they changed it.
To everyone interested: there is a second part of this video, with all suggestions inserted. :)
tbh that spain chicane seems more dangerous than safe
Yeah. Even more dangerous than Barcelona's chicane at the final sector of the track
Eau rouge chicane facing a concrete wall as well
That chicane in Spain was absolutely ridiculous.
Yes
All those 1994 layout's changing were ridicolous
Not as bad as what's there now.
And people complain about what we have today 😂

The year of chicane..
It’s kinda funny they could put chicanes at all these tracks for “driver safety” but wouldn’t do so at Indy in 05
It was against the law by the state of Indiana

uuugh that eau rouge modification breaks my soul
Idk what kind of the eau rouge is that in 1994 it doesn't feel like the real eau rouge

Senna was the tipping point tho Nascar let 2 drivers die before dales death made sweeping changes
The best chicane was actually the Abbey Chicane on Silverstone, wich survived until the layout change in 2010
The slow uphill section at Estoril does survive to this day, although definitely not the "best chicane"!
@@retardray5701 it's not really a chicane is it? It's a crime against humanity

I noticed while watching this video that they have remodelled club corner is there any idea why
Nah that ruined the very fast bridge corner and the flow of the circuit
A great compilation! Good job! Thank you!

I take it this was a response to the deaths of Senna and Ratzenberger on high speed sections.
Portugal Kept the chicane as well.
No way. Really?

That chicane at Spain was, in my opinion, totally unnecessary and very dangerous. I don't like that Spa chicane, but i don't think it's atrocious.
That chicane at estoril was the beginning of the end for that track. First that chicane and then Turn 1 got ruined.
1:05 Nice, they had online racing lags before internet gaming was even a thing
The additions of Chicanes, I'm calling this the "Ayrton Senna effect"
Campsa is less dangerous without the chicane than with the chicane

Great one. But what about Monza's Lesmo II and Hockenheim's third chicane? They modified these corners, too!
Sonic84 The fast Senna chicane had been modified from the year before.
What a blasphemy was that Eau Rouge chicane...i remember watching that race on live TV and i was like “WTF!?”
problems? add chicanes
Dat eau rouge chicane..
Adding a chicane to Eau Rouge is like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa.
