- The terms ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ were not included in the initial draft of the Preamble. It was added later in 1976 by Indira Gandhi. This has been used by many to question if the two words should be removed. In this week’s Let Me Explain, Pooja Prasanna explains why the words were omitted, why it was added later and what it means to India if it is removed once again.

The more I read and understand about Babasaheb Ambedkar, the greater the awe and respect I feel towards him. His argument regarding the term "socialist," to describe our Constitution, is spot on. In a democratic country, where the nation's policies -- especially with regard to the economic framework -- are chosen by the people through the electoral system, how can there be a pre-announced choice of socialism? As Babasaheb rightly points out, what if the vast majority of the electorate wants a capitalist system? Should the government just tell them, "Oh, no, that is just not for you to decide. That has already been fixed for eternity by the makers of our Constitution"?

but by that logic we can't guarantee in the constitution any right to the ownership of private businesses
or atleast large private businesses
as Marxists seem much more concerned about large private businesses than small ones.
Also if you want people to vote on the economy I would argue the most democratic way of having people vote on the economy would be allowing them to vote on how much labour and resources in the country would be dedicated to each sector.

I can't think of any nation where sectoral resource allocation is decided by country-wide votes, do enlighten me if there are any such countries.
Let me make my point clear: if India is officially 'socialist,' can any political party offer 'market reforms' or 'privatization' as part of their manifesto? Wouldn't they be going against the constitution if they did that? In such a case, how could the majority of the people (assuming that they really wanted such reforms) get to choose these policies? Is it fair to tie the hands of our population to the "socialist framework" forever, even if they desperately want to go in a different direction? How is that "democratic"?
I applaud BJP for touching complicated subjects like terroism, Baabri, Article 370, Criminal bill, Tripple Talaq bill, China App ban, Manipur border fencing, Examinations bill, ban on coaching to control student suiicide, UCC, CAA, GST bill, Bank regulation/UPI/ Digitization bill, Reservation bill, Etc..which Congress avoided to not loose vote bank..

Very interesting argument. But one question, when the undivided India was partitioned based on religion, why India should be secular? We agreed for a separate country for muslims, then it is understood that the remaining part of India is for Hindus only. When the other minorities are happily living in India,why only Muslims create trouble ?

India was against the partition. It was the demand of the proponents of two nation theory to partition the country on the basis of religion, which was resisted by the Indian leadership of that time. India cannot subscribe to the lame communal logic of creation of Pakistan. So we are not a country based on religion like Pakistan. We are not copying their misdeeds. If India becomes a religion based country, the communal ideology behind the creation of Pakistan becomes legitimised.
Except Muslim there are other relegions. Hindus are the name give British equal to name others. Hindus are not homogeneous. It is diversified. It is life stlye with varitions.

You missed ( on purpose) the most important point. Indian civil code is based on religion. So Indian constitution cannot be called secular until UCC is implemented.
Secularism is division of religion and state.
Untill the UCC is not implemented in India, India is not a secular state ! So, India is rightly not mentioned as a secular state in the original preample of the constitution of India !

Like constitution is needed for dalits entry to temples, constitution is also needed for ending triple talaq, women entry to mosques.
Constitution is secular but sadly govt controls hindu temples. And constitution says govt priority to setup minority religious institutions which itself is not secular.
So you are basically saying that constituent assembly itself had rejected 'Secular and Socialist', but Indira Gandhi fraudulently added them? If there was no clarity on what does it mean 'secular' why are you saying that constitution was already secular? If it was, why there is need to add it? A lot of questions arise ...

The preamble and the last line of the constitution makes the republic a frqudulent entity with regard to international law..
Since it rejects the accession treaty..and the preamble is a fraudulent statemnt which offers insurance and guarantee to rights to citizens by the people of constitutent assembly who were under oath to the crown ..when the assmebly via the last article is in violation of the Crown oath and international treaty law with the princiely states ...

The 13 member SC bench verdict in the Keshav Bharati vs State of kerala in 1973, made it illegal for parliament to alter the pre-amble( basic structure) of the constitution . Yet Indira was allowed to do it. !!

The word secular is alien to Indian culture. It has been thursts upon the Indian ethos e.g , In Abrahamic religion, the founders are guiding principles and no one can take divergent views. The word secularism is like a football playing by the convent educated illiterate accidental Hindus. In Hindu Dharma (not religion) infinite is both positive and negative but One. A person who opposes the idea of another person is called Nastik ("Sod Bipra Bahuda Badanti") unlike Christian to Hiden, Muslim to Kaffer, Communists to Reactionary forces and empowers the dominating forces with holy duty to kill his opponents! (eg. Lelin, Mao's, Mughals, Christians, Muslims killed their opponents in the name of Jehad, Crusade, revolution. But If he is a Hindu, his opponents had never been killed like them. But the binding forces among the different denominations of Hindu Society are purity in mind, soul and the means to achieve this is "Brahmmochorya". (Not celibacy) which is the greatest gift of Hindu culture to entire humanity. This can be achieved by practicing individually. Hijab is not the solution. Controlling by force will not yield any fruitful result in the society or any person.

Good video Pooja and TNM team. Would have also been good to add that secularism as a basic feature of the constitution has been upheld by the SC in SR Bommai case and Keshavanada Bharati case. Many aspects of the directive principles..in addition to what you mention also show India to be a socialist state. Eg. State should endeavour to reduce inequality, resources to be used for greater common good etc

While secularism is important for our country, from a Hindu perspective and a historical perspective, Muslims got what they wanted, 2 countries, what did we got as “Hindus”? I think rather than a Hindu Rashtra, Dharmic Rashtra is more correct term for Hindutva narrative because Hindu Rashtra excludes other Dharmic religions like Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism.

They wanted to make sure that India never became a hindurashtra or a pure capitalists economy. Even though these words were illegally inserted nobody questioned it.
