The company I work for make siding gauges out of the thick trim board. Cut a 8-9" piece. Our reveal is 6 3/4". So we cut a sliver of the block the width of the siding at a length of 6 3/4" out of the 8-9" block. Real simple. Cost nothing. Make it out of the fall off from thick trim.
Then you need 2 people to nail it on. Big waste of manpower and impossible on ladders and planks. Geckos are the best

This is spot-on!!! Now if I was a contractor doing handyman work I wouldn't hesitate to buy the name brand tool but that guy I am NOT. I am like most watching this, building a garage finishing up the project, about to side the building all by myself. No big deal, as I did this to save money not waste it on tools that I will NEVER use again and have no desire to buy, use and then sell on Craigslist. I'll be making these with scrap metal in the garage.

I didn't spend the big bucks but I did buy a lesser cost siding clamps. Yours are fashioned after the ones I bought. All the siding manufactures recommend 11/4 inch overlap.
Absolutely brilliant, the hardest job was finding the strap. So easy to make and use. Your instructions were a joy to follow.
Perfect timing- I'm also installing LP Smartside on a shed, and likewise- could not justify spending big bucks on a small job. I also happen to have all the materials on hand- even the strong tie strapping! Great job on video- clear and concise. You make me look like a genius!

If I was working by myself, I would just tack a nail down towards the end of the board and have my combination Square set for the reveal
Who is holding your other end while you tack your end in place?
Great idea! I improved it to my liking by using a piece of metal 4 inches long to make a lever, which I just turned sideways a little to release the board instead of unscrewing the wing nut each time. If you round off the top corners you only have to turn it about 30 degrees.

What is the thickness of the piece of wood 1/2" or 5/8" at 6:38 it looks like a heavy 1/2" piece
@@craftman5632 It was about 5/8". As I recall I just found a piece of scrap wood that was slightly thicker than the siding itself.

Nice. I made a couple of very simple "C" channel type bends in sheet metal that hooks to the bottom edge and clamps by using its own spring pressure that is slightly over bent that makes it stay tight until it's removed. It's 7" and works well. Mine is 2" wide and holds the spring pressure well. An eighth of an inch or less if wider with sharpened bottom edge is all it needs. Yours works well also. thanks, just what I was looking for, I ended up making a pair out of 22ga sheet metal (steel), just bent them into the right shape, nothing else. Not as fancy as your design but very simple

That's a great idea!! My only suggestion is to make the hook end at the top less aggressive. A tiny hook would work for its intended purpose and make it a lot easier to remove especially on shorter spans. Amazeballs! 👍 Thanks.

Get a pair of geckos side your house and selling locally, you will loose probably 15 dollars the same amount you will spend in money and time to make yours. they are real nice.

We just bend a backwards "s" out of sheet metal. You set plank on bottom of "s" essentially another set of hands. go nail other side of plank go back to s hanger remove and nail. Makes working solo easy.

I found it easy to install and lightweight enough for one person to deal with pretty easily. Seems to be holding up well. My house is sides with the same product, and I like it there as well. Thanks for watching!

I like it. Nice work man. FYI your nailing pattern is expressly verboten in the lp instructions. They want you to nail from one side to the other or from the center out. The theory being that if you nail one end then trap it with the other end it might lead to buckling.

You should pay the extra money for the cement board siding. The fiber board stuff rots out and turns to wet carboard after about 8 years. You are just creating a future problem for yourself or the next owner.

I was under the understanding minimum overlap is 1 inch to 3 inches? To sustain a wind 75 miles and hour. The shorter the distance of overlap, the weaker the hold.
The LP Smartside instructions indicate a minimum of 1", maximum of 1 3/8" overlap, with the nails driven 3/4" from the top edge of each course.
@@AmplifyDIY This guy is only using a 7/8" overlap.
Yeah, I did shave 1/8" off the lowest recommended minimum, but I did that for a few good reasons. First, I based that measurement off of matching the exact reveal from the siding on my house. The HOA in my neighborhood is pretty strict with respect to making sheds match houses perfectly, so I could not have a wider reveal on the shed than I do on the house. Secondly, I don't live in a particularly windy area. Third, the shed is situated on my property with my house blocking wind along one side and a fence blocking wind along the other.
Also, I built these gauges specifically with an adjustable setting to allow a range of overlap.
Finally, the 1" minimum is what is recommended for the specific product I installed, but is not a universal number for all siding materials.
Of course, consult the installation instructions for whatever product you are installing and build gauges to fit your specific situation.

At my work we don't use no gauges we just put the siding up by are selfs
How did you run the first course alone?!
Hi T! Great question! I marked the walls where the top of the first course needed to be to create the right overhang and gap to the ground. Then I used a small stack of scrap wood at one end to get it close to correct, and simply lifted the other end up to the line and nailed it in place with a single nail. Then went back to the first end that was resting on the scrap blocks of wood, lifted it the last half inch or so to the correct height, and nailed it in. Then I finished nailing the entire length.

I had purchased the siding gauges from local hardware store today, they were for Hardie plank, 5/16. They were $65, they wouldn't fit the Smart Side planks. Too tight. I'm making a set from your design tomorrow. Thanks

Hey there berserk - thanks for watching! Virtually all new construction in my city comes with an HOA... we wanted a new home, and that plus a bunch of other positives about the house, location, builder, etc all outweighed a few negatives... such as the HOA requirement.
