Yes, but its really the weakest link in the IPX6 rating... Even if it doesn't kill the phone I find there is a presure leak that can allow moisture to build up. www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/16/sony-xperia-pro-teardown-reveals-a-huge-vapor-cooling-chamber-and-more/ As I said before, look at the size of the Xperia pro vapor chamber, if on the Xperia 1 iii really has nothing and the thermal dissipation is in charge only of the aluminum of the body is frustrating
I have this phone and the right speaker is not working well. If I blow through the speaker hole it sounds sometimes. Do you think blowing some hot hair from a hair dryer could fix the problem by "bailing" the component? Do you think is it risky to do it?
I just started working in a very thick concrete building where cell reception is extremely poor.... looking to upgrade to a phone with a good antenna. I heard last year's 5 ii had one of the best antennas ever. So I've been waiting to see whats up with the mark iii's.... Do you think the 5 iii internals is going to be the same thing as the 1 iii, just shrunk down?, including the shrinking of those antenna parts? like, would there be reason to believe that the 1 iii should give a stronger connection than the 5 iii?
Some other manufacturers use it as well depending on the application need. From what I have seen, on higher end phones they will use thermal paste vs pads for better heat transfer.
Removing the whole speaker assembly just to get to the screen flex is such a chore for one of the most frequent repairs. The Xperia Z2 from 2014 is more or less like this, so it seems like things have not changed that much in 7 years.
Please could you tell me where you bought that screen protecting tempered glass because I've been trying my luck with 5 of them and all of them having black edges are too slim from the sides so they cover up part of the screen
It may or may not be possible. If you find a camera same size and same connector size fit in the camera space and connect properly to the connector, its possible it may work but there may also be software issues if the software does not read it etc.
Hi was wondering how likely it would be if my phone dropped and basically just the finish got scraped off that the water proofing would be compromised. It was a corner against a basement tile floor so it was a pretty solid surface that it hit. The aluminum doesn’t seem dented but it does seem like the glass has a slight separation from the frame compared to the other side
hmm as long as its not cracked, I wouldn't worry too much but if there is enough separation, then it might be possible the adhesive might get compromised as well allowing water to get in.
@@PBKreviews I can't even tell if there is separation even when using zoom with my old phone. It looks different from the other side where the glass meets the frame it doesn't seem as flush. But it's so slight that most people would think I'm nuts. I'm trying to get Amazon to pay for it since I bought the phone from them and they delayed the case among many other orders the past couple of months. I'm positive this is a tactic to manipulate people into prime accounts. Funny thing is I ordered something today and at checkout there was a message saying we're giving you the opportunity to become a prime member. I had two different orders simultaneously delayed that then ended up at the next shipment center with a 4 hr difference. This leads me to believe they were transported separately. And I find it highly unlikely they both ran into the same issue. And even more unlikely the were both coincidentally delayed simultaneously for different reasons. They also never had any shipping history before they were delayed meaning they didn't leave the origin point before the delay. I also caved and got a prime account which is funny because I ordered all this stuff the past two months and I probably won't need to order anything for a while.
Dear PBK Review I'd like to ask you a question, when you removing the proccecor Board I'm curious can you apply a thermal paste for a better cooling solution?. if so where should I apply it? on top of the metal proccecor or behind the proccecor? and how much thermal paste should I used? Thank You.
Yes you can, but just make sure you don't use a thermal paste that is highly conductive since if it leaks to other chips or components, it can short it. Also you can apply a bit to the top of the processor itself, and some on top of the metal shield covering the processor so it transfers heat to the midframe efficiently. You don't need to put a lot, just a little bit since it will get pressed down and spread a little once you assemble it.
@@PBKreviews so i have to remove the metal shield first then i can apply the thermal paste on the processor? And then use it on top of the metal shield aswell?
@@PBKreviews so i have to remove the metal shield first then i can apply the thermal paste on the processor? And then use it on top of the metal shield aswell?
no there are phones which are more powerful. It uses one of the higher end processors and good cameras but there are phones out now which have better gaming performance and powerful cameras as well with faster charging, bigger batteries and better cooling.
have the same phone and seeing it being unmounted makes me doubt its "waterproof" abilities, i know that the adhesive acts as a sealant but still... Do you know if it's possible to order a back plate for the same phone ? I dropped mine and i slightly cracked it, would like to change it. Would really appreciate ! Thanks ! :)
Hi, parts in general are difficult to find for sony phones, you would need to keep checking ebay or other places for xperia 1 iii battery door cover replacement to see when one might pop up. Also for this phone I believe its just water resistant and not completely water proof etc.
I've had my phone dropped in water. Now it doesn't turn on, I've replaced the battery but still only get a red blinking led and no charge happening, still can't turn on. Any ideas what might need replacing to fire it up again as all my kids pictures etc are on there and I'd like to get them Thanks in advance.
You would need to make sure there is no corrosion left over on any of the chips or connectors. If there is, you need to brush it off with a small brush (like a toothbrush). Also its possible the board may have gotten damaged beyond repair if any of the chips shorted so yep.
I can't get the glass back to loosen no matter how long I apply heat with a dryer. The plastic tools break down but the back glass doesn't move at all. How did he do it?
shouldn't be too hard on this phone. The adhesive isn't that strong. Use a hair dryer to heat up the back for 30 seconds to a minutes by moving it gently around all parts of the back and if you have a suction cup tool, you can use that to help pull up on the back at one side or corner to give you leverage to get a pry tool in between the back and frame and then run it along the sides to pry it off.
I am really surprised the extent of the cooling is just thermal pads.... I wonder how hot the phone will get with use. I really appreciate the modularity of the components though, top tier repairabilty
Sony is a bit notorious about having smartphones that overheat when recording video. Thankfully not thermal shutdown hot, but it might stop recording on a hot day. I’ve also read the phones are smart enough to keep the battery cool when plugged into external power, since it doesn’t have to discharge the battery the temperate stays low. Would have to dig around for a source tho, I don’t own the phone (yet!)
I had the video Pro app shut down due to heat on the first day I owned it on a summer day indoors in the UK. The phone is not optimized for extended periods where the 888 has to run full chat on all cores. I suspect the Pro-I borrows from the Pro in terms of better thermal management. Still, the phone works great for daily usage.
@@ChristopherWoods sawvthe internal part shot of the pro-I looks like the same thermal solution but it runs even hotter cuz of the larger sensor(cropped)
My Xperia 1 III's power button stopped functioning, but the fingerprint scanner directly on it works just fine. Any ideas? I have no repair experience but I have built computers, so I'm wondering if it's something I could attempt to fix at home.
@@PBKreviews I contacted Sony and apparently it was a software issue. Restarting worked but only by holding volume up + power button. Otherwise the power button was unresponsive. It works fine after restart, just thought I'd fill you in.
The phone was being used, so I left the protector on there so the screen would not be scratched if moved around on the surface of the table during the disassembly.

Oh really just because of that? You think it made in china it have no quality? My Xperia E since 2013 and it still work until now same with Xperia X Compact since 2016 still working today. Even it made in China but the quality remain same. Even iphone was made there.
@@vertwheeler6698 Thanks for your comments. Don't get me wrong, I never doubt of their quality. Just for these few years, I have used to not using any of their products.
It was one that sony would be selling themselves on their site. I checked the box it didn't have any branding on it but came with the phone from the person I got it from.
hi, can you please help me how to buy one .. I'm from india and sony stopped their sales .. i couldn't find any global version too .. will the us version work here i mean like carrier issues.. please guide me
Hi, you would need to find one on ebay or some other online store. The network bands for each region version can vary, so you would need to look at the listing you are purchasing and see the listed network bands to match them with your carrier bands and make sure they have the supported bands for your network.
@@PBKreviews one more question the thermal pad is upside down if it put a thermal paste on it and then clip the board back and turn in on is it not gonna short the phone?
As someone who has worked in electronic repair shops, repairing hundreds of phones, tablets, game consoles, and computers I really need to point this out: never use alcohol under the battery when there is an opening to the LCD like that. You WILL damage the LCD if any alcohol gets behind that mid-frame. For anyone reading this comment please heed my advice or this repair could cost you more than you bargained for. Instead of using alcohol heat up the front a little then use a suction cup on the battery. Gently pull up while holding mid frame down. You don't even need to exert too much energy; just keep tension on the suction cup and keep it there. Even if you don't feel any give from the battery at all just keep the tension. Eventually, it will begin to lift and you won't have any risk of damaging the LCD and the battery will come out without any disfigurement, barely any bubbles on back or front if any at all.
I've worked on thousands of phones as well and other electronics in my day, I originally worried about that same thing at one point. However as long as you are using the correct type of isopropyl alcohol (preferably 99% so it evaporates/drys quick and doesn't damage anything) and are not using more than needed, then there is no problem. I've used this method on phones with all sort of openings behind the screen on the mid frame and haven't ran into any issues. But you are correct, if any other type of liquid or alcohol is used, or too much, then yea it can damage parts like the screen or cause the screen layers to separate.
...and fingers crossed it's still waterproof after all this... I had my Sony Xperia XZ repaired by Sony's repair center in the Benelux and you can guess the result...

www.gizmochina.com/2021/03/16/sony-xperia-pro-teardown-reveals-a-huge-vapor-cooling-chamber-and-more/
As I said before, look at the size of the Xperia pro vapor chamber, if on the Xperia 1 iii really has nothing and the thermal dissipation is in charge only of the aluminum of the body is frustrating
Good video!
Thanks!
I would think the 5 iii should have a very similar antenna layout and functions as well as the 1 iii as far as reception goes.
Is Sony the only one who's using the thermal 'pad' (not paste)? It looks clean and perfect. I like it! :D
Some other manufacturers use it as well depending on the application need. From what I have seen, on higher end phones they will use thermal paste vs pads for better heat transfer.
@@PBKreviews great info. Thank you 😊
@@NinPossible You're welcome :)
The back plate is partially open on mine around the sim tray. What should I do ?
Removing the whole speaker assembly just to get to the screen flex is such a chore for one of the most frequent repairs. The Xperia Z2 from 2014 is more or less like this, so it seems like things have not changed that much in 7 years.
Yup, but I prefer removing the speaker over having to remove the battery to gain access to the screen cable. It's got it's benefits I guess.
@@PBKreviews You have a point. I guess compromises have to be made somewhere haha.
Please could you tell me where you bought that screen protecting tempered glass because I've been trying my luck with 5 of them and all of them having black edges are too slim from the sides so they cover up part of the screen
Hi, it came pre installed with it when I got the phone so I have no idea. Sorry.
I wonder if it would be possible to upgrade the front camera since it being modular. That would be awesome.
It may or may not be possible. If you find a camera same size and same connector size fit in the camera space and connect properly to the connector, its possible it may work but there may also be software issues if the software does not read it etc.
do you glue the backplate or just fit it in and it holds? wonder how
Hi was wondering how likely it would be if my phone dropped and basically just the finish got scraped off that the water proofing would be compromised.
I have a sony xperia 1 iii and its so much better then the iphone 13 pro max that i had
👍
Can I change the from camera of the 1 ii with the 1vi
Not sure, sometimes there is software issues which might prevent it from working.
Do you know where the GPS antennas are? I got a second-hand one and GPS isn't working at all and I'm wondering whether I can fix that.
I'm not too sure, sorry.
Very good review, thanks!

How long the thermal paste will last normally sir?
Hello.
Would you repair new Nokia 105 4G or 110 4G?
Thank you.
Hi, will look into it, but usually phones like this many people don't care to watch, so it is not worth spending the money to do.

Is this the best hardware of smartphone in 2021..?
no there are phones which are more powerful.
@@PBKreviews okay, thanks for the reply! Really appreciate 🙂
This is the china version right? Does it have mmwave antenna?
This was an Asian market version and this version did not have any mmwave antennas.

I've had my phone dropped in water.
Now it doesn't turn on, I've replaced the battery but still only get a red blinking led and no charge happening, still can't turn on. Any ideas what might need replacing to fire it up again as all my kids pictures etc are on there and I'd like to get them
Thanks in advance.
You would need to make sure there is no corrosion left over on any of the chips or connectors. If there is, you need to brush it off with a small brush (like a toothbrush). Also its possible the board may have gotten damaged beyond repair if any of the chips shorted so yep.
Where to find mobile network anntena in this phone? I have signal issues and I want to replace that part
Is it possible to repair the motherboard if the motherboard is short circuit for this 1 mark iii.
Ah, i wanted to see how the zoom camera works 🙁
is this battery compatible with 1 mark 2?
Super!!
Thanks!
I am really surprised the extent of the cooling is just thermal pads.... I wonder how hot the phone will get with use. I really appreciate the modularity of the components though, top tier repairabilty
From what Sony says, the midframe is made in a way to act like heatsink as well to transfer the heat.
That's actually better than other manufacturer that only puts graphite pads on one side
Where is signal antenna located and how to replace it?
My Xperia 1 III's power button stopped functioning, but the fingerprint scanner directly on it works just fine. Any ideas? I have no repair experience but I have built computers, so I'm wondering if it's something I could attempt to fix at home.
There is a clicker behind the physical button itself that probably has gone bad. Would probably require replacing that flex cable/button assembly.
@@PBKreviews I contacted Sony and apparently it was a software issue. Restarting worked but only by holding volume up + power button. Otherwise the power button was unresponsive. It works fine after restart, just thought I'd fill you in.
Are there any anti-repair shenanigans with this phone? Like part serialization or such?
Not that I'm aware of. From what I know, the parts should all be replaceable.
Is it Wasser resistent after opening?
How do you remove the LCD from the frame?
Why your screen has a glass screen protector? Usually the phones on the tear down table does not have anything attached to them.

Even iphone was made there.

what screen protector r u using
It was one that sony would be selling themselves on their site.

The battery has pull tabs for the adhesive so both heat and alcohol aren't necessary.
@@pixels_per_inch Spoken like a true inexperienced tech repair man. Battery tabs work 0.5% of the time

Can you explain how to use digital tester?
Hi, not sure what you mean.
I mean do you know how to use digital multimeter? If you know can you make a tutorial video?
...and fingers crossed it's still waterproof after all this... I had my Sony Xperia XZ repaired by Sony's repair center in the Benelux and you can guess the result...
After taking it apart, unless new original pre cut adhesive is used to re attach the back plate, you would lose the water resistance.

You can watch the new video I just uploaded, the samsung battery was Li-ion and the rest Li-po. Both can be dangerous.
