Do you have a single fact to back that up? I've checked my source code for 1112 vanilla deus ex, and both calls to signaling WeaponFire and LoudNoise AI events check for !bHasSilencer and !bHandToHand, which should never change during a weapon's usage, aside from applying weapon mods. If you're referred to the SOUND EFFECT it makes for players to hear when shooting, it does only produce a single silenced gunshot noise, because there's no full auto silenced gunshot noise, but that doesn't impact whether or not any part of the burst can be heard by AI.
Damn, I never took into account that death screams were an actual mechanic in the game. That explains why it "felt" buggy during my first stealth-oriented playthrough. An interesting observation and find!
@@pmchad "emergent gameplay" (AKA "immersive sims") was *big* in the late 90s; it's fallen completely out of fashion with the current trend of game designers all thinking they're movie directors and getting very upset whenever the player tries to go off-script and start improvising. Modern "triple-A" games practically run on rails compared to 0451 games, which were birthed in the 90s.
Been a long time since I played, but I thought that was just realism in the design, it still gives an advantage because enemies near the target will hear the scream and go to alert, but they won't be able to instantly zero-in on the player's location from the gunshot, *if* the player is also not in a brightly lit place; any enemies very near to the player also will not be alerted. As long as you use the stealth pistol at a reasonable distance and *stay in the shadows* (it's great with a scope mod and even better with the range mod on top of that), it's still advantageous over a regular pistol. Also, *obviously* your footfalls alerted the guards; you jumped off a roof onto hard concrete then ran around at top speed. This is an 0451 game; it has the same lineage as Thief 1 & 2 (honourable mention to Thief 3; Thief 4 can bugger off). Walking is quieter than running, crawling (crouch-walking) is quieter still, and I think the surface one is running on also does make a difference; it *certainly* does in the Thief games. Also also, obviously it's not as effective if you're not at master-level; this should go without saying, but you also weren't waiting for your cross-hairs to fully zero-in on each shot, which is what you have to do when you're not at master level. IIRC, if you hold the cross-hairs on the target long enough for them to fully shrink down and zero in, you have a *chance* to do significantly more damage and drop an un-armoured target in one shot; I think enemies that wear helmets are less susceptible to single-hit headshot kills. I also think you may have chosen a bad level for your test run, since this is the level where the UNATCO troops start out allies and can switch to enemies at any point during the mission, and IIRC the game scripting is *very* erratic about how and when this triggers; I suspect this may cause the AI's aggro/awareness reactions to JC to potentially be inconsistent compared to the rest of the game. Even though this definitely seems to be after the point all troops in the building are guaranteed to become hostile, I wonder if each of their AI behavior is altered depending on how and if you interacted with or were seen by any of them earlier in the level when they were in a friendly-but-tense state. Some of them might seem to have preternatural awareness of your location because you pushed them very close to aggro whilst they were still in a friendly state; there's also the possibility that they're *scripted* to run up the stairs and know you must be there somewhere, because, in-story, Simons knows you must have just used the terminal on the roof.
Nah, I noticed immediately after trying out both non-lethal and lethal melee stealth early on in the game. Which is why the baton is the single best stealth weapon in the game. And you can always double tap the unconscious body later if you want to.
@@pmchadto be fair there's not going to be a death scream if their instantly killed by a headshot. More games should have them though for when it does take more than one shot

The screams masking the gunshots is the only reasonable way I can think of to shrug off the fact that you're using an unsuppressed gun lol. Nice video 👍
I know this is off-topic, but I like how the creator used an AI generated JCD to voice the video. The campy and compressed voice acting in Deus EX lends well to Generative AI TTSes.
I have also noticed that when you kill an enemy with a silenced weapon, and other enemies hear their death scream, they immediately know your position, and come running directly toward the position you shot from. I usually activate the "loud weapons" modifier in Revision, so that I can justify silenced weapons.
Just attaching a suppressor onto the regular pistol would have sufficed instead of having a whole new weapon entirely. I remember watching an interview with Warren Spector that he mentioned that some of the devs wanted to get rid of it too, I suspect replacing it with an attachable suppressor but that wasn't made clear.
Very nice observations. I've been playing Deus Ex a bit myself and tooling around and I never really saw much of a difference between the two Pistols. I guess the Stealth one solely makes up rn for the cool bullpup design lol.
The design of the stealth pistol is also really bizarre. A bullpup Glock 17 with a really skinny magazine that could absolutely _not_ hold 10mm handgun rounds. You could tell it was designed by people who don't understand how guns work. Same deal with the "assult rifle" looking like a submachine gun but firing full-power rifle cartridges. Its bullpup design and "sideways" drum mag could never feed cartridges IRL (the box magazine in front of the pistol grip is actually the magazine for the 20mm launcher btw)
That A.I. interpretation of Jay Franke's recordings of J.C.D. is pretty incredible. 💪😎✌️ Funny side note, I actually voiced the J.C. character in an old Machinima video ("Trouble at the 'Ton"). Yeah, I'll definitely look into that. I played a lot of shifter when I was younger but I didn't really find Revision all that appealing. I'm also going to try out GMDX, the last time I played GMDX was like over a decade ago I think. A very old version with not many new features
@@BaconHer0 GMDX just looks like the revision with a different paint of coat honestly, changes way too much. And some of its useful tweaks already have standalone versions. I wonder if patching these vanilla bugs (+ broken changes introduced by GOTY) is even possible at this point. Shifter is the closest to being that but some of its changes like the XP system is debated.
@@arhum1224 Fr? My first playthrough of Deus Ex was on GMDX and comparing my gameplay to vanilla one I saw no difference. Even on Revision I find it hard to find what they actually changed. Where can I read about their changes?

By gameplay changes I mean how skills/augs work, weapon stats etc. Your weapon tier list video showed how almost half of weapons aren't even viable. Only thing I probably wouldn't change about OG Deus Ex are the maps, Revision maps are just way too big sometimes
IMO a character like JC as a combat instructor would probably work well in the Deus Ex universe. The constant deadpan demeanour, delivery of jabs mixed in with actual instruction would force recruits to stay on their toes and sharpen their wits, especially if mistaking a key point for a joke would mean being stuck with having to clean toilets alone for a week.
I wish there was more than one laser upgrade early in the game Use one on starting pistol or keep it for assaul rifle from the trooper who fell on the ground under mysterious circumstances....
The silenced pistol is completely irrelevant once you've found the first silencer mod. I had no idea that there were people that didn't know this, considering that I figured as much out in my first playthrough when the game was new.
I learned how basic this game's stealth is when I decided to use the GEP gun to make silent takedowns, and it actually ended up working like the meme said.
"A non-lethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance..." - Paul Denton I mean, it's right there at the start of the game. If you want to be stealthy, go for knockouts with the tranq darts. Another favourite of mine is to shoot the poison gas barrels with the stealth pistol - not enough to break them open, but enough to make them leak green gas and hurt any enemies nearby.
The riot-prod seems like an absolute joke compared to the rest at first, but in practised hands it can actually be scary effective for a silent run, right up there with Garrett's blackjack. Unfortunately, ammo for it is absurdly sparse from the get go (pesky game balance), and IIRC vanishes almost entirely by the late game.
@@TonkarzOfSolSystem Only NSF troopers because they have 75hp. Common troopers and above with 100 or more HP cannot be instantly KO'd by dart, even at master level
Facts man, i found myself playing eith the regulat pistol, switching to the stealth one soon as it was availablr, and then modding and switching BACK to the unsilenced one because a lot of the maps were large enough and the enemies sparsely sprinkled, i could do that. If there were more then 1, melee does the job just fine Alternatively, silenced sniper does the job of the pistol at no other drawback other then ammo price, but if you explore, use melee when you can, and make the shots count by paintinng the wall with brainmatter, its a good alternative
The wonky mechanics in DX are what make it great. Thanks to the alliance system, it's possible to kill some NPCs with a loud weapon in plain sight and not aggro anything, if you pass the bare minimum amount of checks.
I love how deep this game is with all the mechanics like the various alert systems and play styles... that said I always just go full juggernaut destroying everyone and everything mercilessly.
Cool video, after 23 years and many play thrus you still can learn something. It makes sense from a balancing perspective that the stealth pistol doesn't one shot.. I always thought of the stealth pistol as a replacement for the regular pistol after you get it. Seems redundant to have a "loud" one if the the stealth pistol did the same thing but quiet. I like the crossbow for the first half of the game anyway, tranq dart to the head and its instadowned.
On my rifles playthrough I discvered that the sniper can take out drone guns and cameras at max skill (don't remember if it also needed targting aug, since that increases damage, but still). With targeting aug on it could also take out the mid-tier bots with six or seven shots. Game's beyond borked in the player's favor.
"Remember we're police, stick with the prod. A nonlethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance." -Paul Denton, Liberty Island, first conversation
I've been playing this since 2002, and I always assumed the noise from guns were just binary "Loud/Not Loud". No idea they actually made it so the different guns have different sound levels.
It's a good SMG though, can argue it's better than actual AR(espec with a silencer). For silenced stealth weapons go sniper rifle you can even destroy cameras on master level lol.
I definitely noticed back in 2003 when I first played DX the "stealth pistol" damage was never high enough to kill off targets with one headshot. Even when modded (which most don't work with) its never as good as the pistol could be.

It's all in the numbers. Number one: That's terror. Number two: That's terror.
I was expecting a meme but instead, I was given an entertaining and informative video. Well played.

Good vid
Keep it up
Huh, never knew I needed JC himself to talk to me about game mechanics until now, thanks chief.
That A.I. interpretation of Jay Franke's recordings of J.C.D. is pretty incredible. 💪😎✌️ Funny side note, I actually voiced the J.C. character in an old Machinima video ("Trouble at the 'Ton"). I also did a pretty awesome cosplay, which included legitimate L.E.D. sunglasses (no joke), and a "Dragon's Tooth Sword". I did all the electronics myself.
Dang man, sounds awesome
Whoa! That's so cool man
@@BaconHer0 Thanks. :) The cosplay and my J.C. impression (LOL) is on my channel--this one--if anyone ever wants to look it up. But it's pretty old. Probably from 2014 or something.
The Machinima thing was an animation by Leo Tierney, and I don't think it's on my channel, heheh. And to be clear, I didn't get paid for any of this, I just did all of it. :)
P.S. "A BOMB!"
@@Novastar.SaberCombat I remember watching that video back in high school LOL.
I definitely needed this today.
I always hated the silenced pistol and even installing a silencer mod on the regular pistol. Now I know I was right all along.
You can't put a silencer mod on the normal pistol.
@@TonkarzOfSolSystem They ppatched that out? Not that it ever mattered. Just put a silencer on the sniper rifle. Unless they patched that, too.
Death scream with a bullet to the head? 😵💫
I can imagine the guy who invented the stealth pistol watching this and being like "GREAT. Another 40244 billion dollars down the drain."
I like putting a scope on it and using it as a substitute sniper rifle.
Helps save ammo once I get the actual sniper rifle.
U-UNATCO? No, Savage.
The non silenced pistol looks better than silenced imo, was the only thing I cared for when choosing. But I guess being better mechanically is good too...
You didn't immediately notice that the normal pistol was better? I think it looks cooler, too, but even on my first playthrough, I realized pistol was all I really needed.
They're too busy listening to the banging soundtrack to hear the gunshot
as someone who just started playing deus ex and trying/failing to be stealthy, this video is greatly appreciated 😂also love this kind of format for a vid!
0:41 bruh i killed an enemy from a HIDDEN spot with it, he died, screamed, and all the others SOMEHOW KNEW where I was
1:23 that's what i mean how can the guy below know where i am
I think they run towards me not the death screem, as you see after 2:10
I love how this game was so broken and still so good
I'm glad we finally see some Deus Ex content on YT 😊
Hopefully you'll make more videos about this game and maybe in future you can tackle popular gameplay changes mods like Revision or Shifter?
@@arhum1224 You might want to look at the Deus Ex Transcended mod. That mod is intended to be bug fix only
@@arhum1224 Fr? My first playthrough of Deus Ex was on GMDX and comparing my gameplay to vanilla one I saw no difference. Even on Revision I find it hard to find what they actually changed.
Where can I read about their changes?
@@BaconHer0 Hot take: I actually think Deus Ex could use a lot of gameplay changes.
Maybe I should train the AI with General Carter's voice to give instruction on weapon use
@@BaconHer0 you can certainly try, perhaps also a guide to weapon mods or something.
Honestly, I find Gunther and Anna's demeanour in the vanilla training sequence to be pretty enjoyable already.
As I remember, the best silent pistol is a sniper rifle with a silencer.
This JC Denton AI voice is a marked improvement over one in Weapons Tier List.
This almost has the energy of JC posting tutorials for executing covert hostile infiltrations of government facilities on the dark web
Pretty good point actually. Can't see myself using this weapon any more
I wish there was more than one laser upgrade early in the game
Use one on starting pistol or keep it for assaul rifle from the trooper who fell on the ground under mysterious circumstances....
"If you're far away enough, any weapon can be a silent weapon"
Words to live by
It's weird that there are screams when you die even if your brain stops functioning.
JC Denton giving me Deus Ex tutorials is the thing I never knew I needed
and this is why the stealth pistol ends up dropped on the floor never to be seen again in all my playthroughs
Haha yeah it's funny when that happens
Good content as always!
Please, do tier list for augmentation or/and skills (AND WITH FACTS TO BACK THAT UP)!
Cheers!
"A non-lethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance..."
- Paul Denton
I mean, it's right there at the start of the game. If you want to be stealthy, go for knockouts with the tranq darts.
Another favourite of mine is to shoot the poison gas barrels with the stealth pistol - not enough to break them open, but enough to make them leak green gas and hurt any enemies nearby.
Haha! The tranq darts are so much worse at stealth than the stealth pistol!
@@BaconHer0 No death screams though :)
@@BaconHer0 Tranq darts can instant knockout with a headshot.
@@TonkarzOfSolSystem Only NSF troopers because they have 75hp. Common troopers and above with 100 or more HP cannot be instantly KO'd by dart, even at master level
so what you mean is , the basic pistol is the best rock in the game ?
you can lure them with sound AND kill them instantly
I like when I hear "shit, I miscalculated, two guys" with JC Dentons voice lol
The enemy can't hear how loud your gun is if the enemy is already dead~
Facts man, i found myself playing eith the regulat pistol, switching to the stealth one soon as it was availablr, and then modding and switching BACK to the unsilenced one because a lot of the maps were large enough and the enemies sparsely sprinkled, i could do that. If there were more then 1, melee does the job just fine
Alternatively, silenced sniper does the job of the pistol at no other drawback other then ammo price, but if you explore, use melee when you can, and make the shots count by paintinng the wall with brainmatter, its a good alternative
Jc Denton self narrates himself committing an act of terror
The wonky mechanics in DX are what make it great. Thanks to the alliance system, it's possible to kill some NPCs with a loud weapon in plain sight and not aggro anything, if you pass the bare minimum amount of checks.
The stealth pistol is good for stealth when you have a good gaming chair.
I love how deep this game is with all the mechanics like the various alert systems and play styles... that said I always just go full juggernaut destroying everyone and everything mercilessly.
GEP gun is the optimal weapon for a stealth kill.
"The stealth pistol needs two -"
Thats all I needed to hear.
Adore these Deus Ex videos, keep up the great content!!
Misda JC Denton in da flesh
It's good as a noise maker. Other than that, the standard pistol out-damages it and the crossbow accomplishes better functionality.
Standard pistol does the same noisemaking job.
no one will know you're there if you leave no witnesses with the GEP gun
Thank God someone is still creating content about this masterpiece
He was loud and proud
Well now I feel doubly stupid for putting a silencer on my sniper rifle
Cool video, after 23 years and many play thrus you still can learn something. It makes sense from a balancing perspective that the stealth pistol doesn't one shot.. I always thought of the stealth pistol as a replacement for the regular pistol after you get it. Seems redundant to have a "loud" one if the the stealth pistol did the same thing but quiet. I like the crossbow for the first half of the game anyway, tranq dart to the head and its instadowned.
Stealth pistil, sneaky and silenced!
*Shoots a guy in the head* "OWW!!! WHAT WAS THAT!?"
Your presentation on this is perfect.
Just a good-ass video, period.
Damn. More advanced stealth mechanics than even Metal Gear Solid
JC's AI voice is too good!
This explain why GEP gun is the best for stealth xD
this is really good, make this a series
My entire stealth-focused life is a lie.
That's a funny looking mini crossbow
Here -
You can have my stealth pistol
Good to know on my next playthrough.
OK I didn't realise that about the death scream. I did realise very early on that needing two headshots was a problem...
"Remember we're police, stick with the prod. A nonlethal takedown is always the most silent way to eliminate resistance."
-Paul Denton, Liberty Island, first conversation
@@Ryvaken "Stick with the GEP gun for the most silent takedown." - Paul Denton, Malkavian mod I think.
Silenced Glock>stealth pistol doesn't look as cool, but is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more effective
Seems like what they needed to program is that kills without being alerted do not cause a death scream.
I've been playing this since 2002, and I always assumed the noise from guns were just binary "Loud/Not Loud". No idea they actually made it so the different guns have different sound levels.
Good info, but it’s almost 25 years later, and Gunther still hasn’t gotten his lemon lime😂😂
It's a good SMG though, can argue it's better than actual AR(espec with a silencer). For silenced stealth weapons go sniper rifle you can even destroy cameras on master level lol.
wow i learned something new about deus ex today. thank you JC Denton
The regular pistol will always be my favorite ^^
Btw, very good video : )
That narration is text-to-speech with JC Denton voice via AI, I presume? Impressive how far technology has gone!
God, the systems in this game are amazing.
I definitely noticed back in 2003 when I first played DX the "stealth pistol" damage was never high enough to kill off targets with one headshot. Even when modded (which most don't work with) its never as good as the pistol could be.
Yeah you need to be master level to single headshot common troopers. Big waste of points
