i have a Leica and it always interesting to me that no one really talks about then fact that the lenses that are accompanied with these cameras are truly what makes the image quality supreme ...
Been watching a lot of your videos lately after watching your video on the M-D (dream camera). Seeing as how it'll take a while to save for the M-D, I've been binge watching your Leica videos. Really, really excited to get my first Leica and your videos are very soothing and fun to watch. Love it!
Thanks for another great review, looking forward to the next one.Leica store Miami lend me a M10 for couple of hours, I was impressed with the high ISO performance, and did like the slimmer body. I'm not sure if I'll like the smaller battery, since now I'm spoiled by the long battery life on the 240.
Yes, the ISO is somewhat 1-1.5 stop higher, meaning you can go 10,000 if you must. That's a lot when you use the usually light-strong Leica lenses. On the battery, I find it lasts for a day without EVF, or somewhere around 600 pictures. I generally like batteries to be smaller, and more powerful; which is the way it goes with all batteries. The M10 battery is smaller, but relatively more powerful than the M240 battery: 80% or the M240 battery power in 60% of the size. (I haven't measured precisely and I probably should or the article coming up).
Magic Of Light that's good to know, if you think the battery is powerful enough then I'll definitely considering upgrade later. 600 pictures are plenty enough! I also love that VF is a lot bigger(back to film leica standard), that with the high ISO are the two features attracted me the most.
When I saw your first video about Leica M8 and others,I've started to look on Leica from another perspective. Not just your verbal descriptionnof cameras and lenses, but also backgrounded by your photos. If only there would be cheaper M9,I wouldn't think too much.Thank you... ;-)
I know what you mean. Have a look at this that I just re-posted on the D2, that's a $300 Leica and will get you going. www.overgaard.dk/leica_digilux2.html
One feature I love in my M-9 is a menu setting under "color saturation" which is "vintage B&W" which gives a lovely slightly colored hue to my B &W photos. I'm told that is gone in the new M-10. Is there anyway I can reproduce that effect when I get my new M-10? Thanks, Paul in New Jersey
I would do it in the editing in Lightroom or Capture One Pro. Generally, I recommend to leave things as original in camera as possible (BW in M9, not any special setting) and edit it later. So as to have the choice later to add special looks to an original neutral look. But I know what you mean. You can download my free settings for Capture One Pro and Lightroom here. Maybe I will make a preset for that look of the M9 vintage. Hadn't thought of that before: www.overgaard.dk/Thorsten-von-Overgaard-Gallery-Store-Specials.html
I recently used the M10 at Leica Mayfair in London, its a stunning camera - tomorrow you should wake up and smile, why? You have a whole raft of Leica camera's, get out and enjoy them, enjoy the moment. Me.. I will continue using my Leica X typ 113, and I will save like a demon until I can afford an M.
In my film days, I shot with Leica M6 35mm rangefinder with the following lenses: 21mm f/1.4 Leitz 35mm f/1.4 Zeiss 90mm f/2 Leitz I patiently waited for Leica to produce a digital rangefinder that was similar to my M6 film rangefinder. The M10 looks like the rangefinder I want and need.
It seems that you are using autofocus mode to film. Is it a good idea to close autofocus once your are all set and you sit in the same position throughout the shoot? Thx
Clearly you know your stuff Thorsten but in this video we had sight a rare event.....at 2.54 you cracked a smile! More of that perhaps?! When can we expect the Cba and Mexico vids?
Thor - another great presentation.I don't have any Leica bodies but do adapt some of their older lenses to my Fuji's which is probably slightly blasphemous.
A lot on the forums are saying the M10 colors are very similar to the M9, I assume raw files, will be awaiting your next video on the image quality and colors :) great video as always! -James
Two questions come to mind from this video. Does the ISO dial only move in whole stops, say 100-200-400, ignoring 125, 160, 250, 320, etc.? Also, I don't see a PC sync socket: does use of the Visoflex in the shoe prevent any flash synchronization?
Yes, there are no sync, so if you have the EVF in the hot shoe, you cannot have a flash at the same time. Not a great loss in my opinion because Leica generally are low light cameras "meant" to be used without flash. Opinions of course differ on this. The dial goes in full stops like film did; if you set it to M(anual, which some call Menu), you can set the ISO in the Menu, and in there it goes in 1/3 stops from 100 ISO to 50,000 ISO.
I have a Nikon Df: the ISO sensitivity can be set on the dial in ⅓ step increments. Film speeds were in ⅓ steps: Rollei Retro 80s (AGFA Aviphot), Kodak Portra 160, Adox Scala 160, Ilford FP4 Plus 125, and Kodak Tri X 320 (sheet film) are remaining examples of films with speeds on the intermediate steps. It seems to me that since the shutter, aperture and sensor are all controlled electronically, it should have been easy to make both shutter speed dial and ISO dial adjustable in ⅓ steps. The only thing more foolish than a photographer fiddling with menus, trying to adjust his exposure, is being that photographer.
Hi Thorsten. Face shape and style of glasses seem to be the driving factors for the amount of relief the larger eyepiece affords. In your case how much better are you able to see the 35mm frame lines on the M10 compared to the M240?
It's effectively a tiny bit more than the M9 and M240: The reason is that you see more, but the view is larger. So the result is about the same field of viewing. I would say 75% of a 35mm frame
Hello Thorsten, always great to hear you talk. I see that there is also a Fujifilm X-Pro2 on your desk. How would you compare that camera with the Leica M? Greetings Alain
Thank you for the reply and I'm looking forward to it Thorsten. I have a X-Pro2 for over a year now, but keep looking at a Leica (M-D or now the M10). I love the simplicity and as a designer the look and feel. If you want to see the images I shoot: instagram.com/alainmonnens/ or my designs at www.idam.be.
Hi Thorsten, really enjoy your videos and would love to hear your point of view in the X-Pro2. I know you said you'd be talking about it in the next video... any idea when that might go live? No pressure... just curious!
I really like your videos. The segue between the intro song and the subsequent content could be a little smoother, though. What is the watch that you are wearing in your videos? It looks nice.
Always good to see your review, fell less commercial but more personal. Also I was wondering about your straps on the camera, seems very unique, is there any place I can find one?
Thorsten another great review. I am very interested in see your coming thoughts on that X-Pro2. My M8 still works like new, but sometimes I think in the moment I will have to replace it, maybe I won't be able to invest 5000 usd in an M-D or M10 so I might think in "downgrade" to X-Pro2...
Rather than getting this new M10, I'm contemplating of getting a different model. Could you give some quick hints on the differences of the M-P, M-240 and M-262. Appreciated!
The M9 is having a revival as people seem to recognize it was pretty perfect and very simple. So they are slightly up in price again because nobody really wants to let them go (or at least so few sell that there are more buyers than sellers). M240 is faster and all than the M9, so you get used to that and like it. There is not a big difference compared to the M10 besides the M240 is thicker body (which you only notice if you go back from the M10), and then the colors of the M10 are more like the M9 than the M240. M262 is the same as the M240, except is has no video and it has a WB button.
Magic Of Light Nice sum up Mr. Overgaard, I would add that all of those are overpriced toys, and if one actually wants to take quality photographs, one buys a Sony or Fuji mirrorless. Just so that our friend can make a well informed decision regarding his camera purchase...
thanks Leica, for not making me spend money on a new body - will keep the m240 until the next update, maybe not even then..thanks for another great review. looking forward to the next one.
I really liked your video...day with a Leica video..it's really inspirational. I would love to see more of that. Will we see something like that from your own channel ?
There's a few things on heat, battery, image quality, etc that goes into that as well. And also that if they pursue video, they will have to add HDMI, minijack and all to the M10. So they left video in the M240 and that is still available; and then the Leica SL is the "real video solution" from Leica.
Great video...except for one thing: the focus hunting on the video is very unprofessional and distracting. Please make sure that whoever is recording your video learns some basics about video production and turns off autofocus. Apart from that issue, I enjoyed watching :-)
Leica it'll probably outlive you, that one camera that you can carry everyday everywhere for the rest of your life without even thinking about upgrading im a leica Leitz Cl film user
I recently visited a Leica Store in Rancho Mirage, California. I have an M(240) and I wanted the salesman to give me a few good reasons why I should trade in my M(240) on a new M10. He couldn't give me even one good reason. I found out that the reason for the M(240)'s larger, heavier battery was the M(240)'s video capability.
If Leica were ever to offer an M11, hopefully the shutter would be absolutely noiseless. Had the M10 an utterly noiseless shutter, I would be tempted to trade in my M(240).
i have a Leica and it always interesting to me that no one really talks about then fact that the lenses that are accompanied with these cameras are truly what makes the image quality supreme ...
Another first class presentation. Great information brilliantly produced, I've not seen better on UA-cam .
Welcome, and thank you for the kind words.

Yes, that's blasphemy ... but it does happen
A lot on the forums are saying the M10 colors are very similar to the M9, I assume raw files, will be awaiting your next video on the image quality and colors :) great video as always! -James
They are closer to the M9 than any other, and perhaps even better. I'll touch over it later...
I still have to see anything closer or better to the M8/9 CCD magic. :)

Hello Thorsten, always great to hear you talk. I see that there is also a Fujifilm X-Pro2 on your desk. How would you compare that camera with the Leica M? Greetings Alain
I'mm be talking about the Fuji and the M10 in next episode, as well as the X-Pro 2 in it's own episode later.

Is that an x-pro at the edge of your table?
yeah. X-pro2 graphite edition
Yes, Graphite with 23mm f/2.0. More on that, later...
I spotted it too. I wonder if there's a change of allegiance in the offing!
Hi Thorsten, really enjoy your videos and would love to hear your point of view in the X-Pro2. I know you said you'd be talking about it in the next video... any idea when that might go live? No pressure... just curious!
There will be a X-Pro 2 video, and a 2nd M10 video :-)
I really like your videos. The segue between the intro song and the subsequent content could be a little smoother, though.

Thank you. Most of the straps I use are the Rock'n'Roll from www.tieherup.eu
I would look towards M9 if you have to replace the M8
Thank you for another great review ! I always enjoy your presentations, they are the best !
Thank you!

Hi, Mr.O do you think you could possibly do some how to's/tips on shooting with film cameras?
I might do a video on Leica MP, Leica M3, Leica M4 ...
I would like to see a video about Fujifilm X-pro2 . I want to hear your thoughts about that camera.
I will be talking M10 and Fuji X-Pro 2 in the next episode of the Leica M10, as well as article and video on the Fuji X-Pro 2 later.
Great video, what do you recommend between M10 & M240
The one you lust the most for. Simply, don't look at specifications or anything else, just go with what the hearth tells you. Can't be wrong.
Another honest video without yap yap. Thank you Mr. Viking
Thank you, Tom!
Love that graphite xpro2 on the right.
Review coming, later...
looking forwards, sir, thanks
what is the camera in the right corner.. is it a Fujifilm?
Yes, Fuji X-Pro 2. I'll get around that in the episode 2 :-)
thanks Leica, for not making me spend money on a new body - will keep the m240 until the next update, maybe not even then..thanks for another great review. looking forward to the next one.
Welcome. Let's see how long you can withstand :-)
Becker Inal i withstood for 3wks , and then i bought one... lol.. 6wks later, it arrived.
great work
Thank you!
Thank you for an another good pragmatic review of usabillity
I really liked your video...day with a Leica video..it's really inspirational. I would love to see more of that. Will we see something like that from your own channel ?
It was a different production, but there is some plans of doing ... something. All I can say :-)
Magic Of Light Awesome !
beautiful video, thank you.
Why did you change the color hue of your video?
Different location
Great review, Thorsten.
Thank you, Carrie Ann!
You say that you're not that impressed with the new camera but you don't say why. Why?
It'll all make sense in the next video and the online articles coming :-)
Once you get the latest Leica model, do you ever go back and use previous models?
Yes, I use M10 and M9 now, and occasionally M240
The X-Pro2 is the only camera I can afford in this video. The M10 is a distant dream.
That will work ...
It doesn't have to be. Even if you set aside a little amount each paycheck.
Why on earth would they remove the video function? How could that ONE button bother anyone so much that they would rather not have video at all?
There's a few things on heat, battery, image quality, etc that goes into that as well. And also that if they pursue video, they will have to add HDMI, minijack and all to the M10. So they left video in the M240 and that is still available; and then the Leica SL is the "real video solution" from Leica.
Where is Leica M10 - part 2?
It is this one: ua-cam.com/video/eBKKdCVr1tM/v-deo.html
Maybe you should rename that one so people can see that is the part two
I love this channel but it makes me feel awful for having had so many Leicas and now I have none.
Great video...except for one thing: the focus hunting on the video is very unprofessional and distracting. Please make sure that whoever is recording your video learns some basics about video production and turns off autofocus. Apart from that issue, I enjoyed watching :-)
Thank you. We are aware of the focusing issue and will try to stray more focused in the future :-)
Leica it'll probably outlive you, that one camera that you can carry everyday everywhere for the rest of your life without even thinking about upgrading im a leica Leitz Cl film user

Great Review!! Thx!! Greetings from Vienna! ;)
Thank you!
Turn of autofocus when you are filming :-)
I think we had too low light in our new location. We'll work on it.
Yes and keep up the good work otherwise :-)
It is a ghost camera.... they dont exist for the public.
Be alert and fast. I've seen them come and go in stores :-)
