I am an African American woman who was searching for an authentic Italian gravy recipe, what i found was this wonderful gem. My favorite part is when she goes in the oven for that first taste. At that moment, it is the same for you whether you are italian, black, Hispanic, irish. Mama giving her stamp of approval, like only she can. Now we can eat. Your mommie is beautiful. Thank you for sharing
Love, love, love this video. I am of Lithuainian descent, but growing up we had many Italian neighbors and I recall the wonderful food coming out of those kitchens. This brings back so many memories.... and your grandmother is adorable. You are so lucky to have her. Thanks for a great video.
This video warms my heart! This woman is adorable. I agree with the previous comments about how her generation. She grew up so poor but has so much love. Her face lit up on something so simple like visiting the beautiful church her parents were married in. God bless your grandmother!
I LOVED this video. I am Italian and have been blessed with a family that loves to cook. I learned how to make gravy when I was 7 years old. Although all of my relatives in my parents generation have passed away - the last being in Dec. 2011 at the age of 86, I am eternally grateful for them teaching us how to cook and passing the gravy recipes to us. Watching your video made me reminisce the happy memories of cooking with my mother. Thank you so much. God bless your precious grandmother.
my favorite part of this video are the lovely and heartwarming stories and memories of the family and childhood, traditions etc - I love to hear people tell their stories, my mother did this all the time when she was alive, but I never appreciated it when I was a kid until I got older, and now she is gone. bless mothers and their wonderful stories, cooking and homey feel lol
"We didn't have much money, but we had a lotta love".... best line of the whole video. It's really sad how our current generation, for the most part, lost sight of the good old fashioned simple values in life. These days it's all about money - back then it was all about family and togetherness. Love love love this video :)
My moms family immigrated from Germany and I used to love to visit my grandmother when she was making roulladen which is very close to braciole. How did they make something so delicious with these few humble ingredients? I think they start with a tutorial from their mother which encompasses a whole family's knowledge of the dish. They go on to make it hundreds of times learning and improving with each iteration. By the time you show up at that woman's house there has been so much study and advancement on that dish you are going to be absolutely rocked by the taste. She's gone now but I still make it for my own family every Christmas eve.
If there is ever proof of any good coming from the invention of the internet -it comes from videos such as this. The histories & legacies of the world's immigration to America are being preserved & luckily before those who had this experience are gone-I only wish that I could have had the opportunity with my grandparents & parents-I am of Irish & Italian descent.Thank you for posting these treasures.
That was adorable. I LOVED it. Enough said. Signed: An Irish-American NY girl who wanted to marry an Italian NY boy who's grandma would teach me how to cook!
Thank you for sharing your family's story and delicious recipes. My family came from more northern regions, so the pig skin braciole was something new to me. But now I must try it! Have a great day.
"Bella" :-) ...just LOVED this video - reminded me so much of my family! Researching Braciole recipes brought me here; glad I took the time to watch the full vid. Got so much more than just a recipe.
Thank you Mark, this waswonderful to see. Seems like your family was getting here just when my dad's parents got here from the Amalfi Coast Region. I was struck by your Grandmother's story about the letter writing...My grandmother did that for our entire Italian neighborhood. She understood all the dialects & after she read them their letters she would patiently take "dictation". I'd get to serve the coffee & cookies! Would you believe I've never tasted the pork skin version? Gotta make it.
Awesome! I loved it. One of the Best Sauce Video's I've seen, if not thee Best, it's just Great ... Thank you, I really enjoyed it. Love your Nonna Marie, she's Awesome! Seems like your family came over around the same time as both my grandparents on my mothers side, who came in1904 from Lecara Freddi which is about 15 miles from Corleone. My grandfather was a Shoemaker there, and Luck Luciano and the Sinatra Family are from Lecarra Freddi as well. Thanks again, I loved your Video. Daniel NY,NY
Hello everybody, I love this. I am from Finland and my husband is from Casteltermini. And now I found that this music you play in the beginning is a finnish polka "Säkkijärven polkka". So nice! Don't know how that comes !? :)
Now that I have seen the film to the end I find there is under music- a polka unknown. Now it is no longer unknown it is "Säkkijärven polkka" from Finland :) :) Baci e abbracci da Finlandia
interesting to see the variations of these traditional dishes- my nonna made these with pork, but the stuffing was hard boiled egg, breadcrumbs, locatelli and salami.
id rather be a shoemaker all my life and still have my balls then to say i agree with something just to get along i capiche ? attitude its an italian thing

Now that I have seen the film to the end I find there is under music- a polka unknown. Now it is no longer unknown it is "Säkkijärven polkka" from Finland :) :)

I would love to try this variation, but Pork is just so very bad for you.

I want your nona!!! I'm gonna stuff her in my pocket run away! She is ever so adorable!!!
Pork has now been bred to be leaner than beef. Better to have a pork chop these days than a steak! Mangia, Mangia!
I wonder if Mark Hayes had anything to do with this.....Hmmmmm.......
