Thanks so much for the informative video!! It was one of the first to pop up when I was looking into how to change the cabin air filter myself. It was easier than I thought it would be. Thanks again!!
Looks, I was worried about Air Bag being on top of where Filter was; but knew how to get at Filter, but it was blocked by not completely removing Glove Box, but removing the correct three screws, now makes it easy to do it myself - 2004 Toyota Avalon XLS Owner Thanks JLQ
This video is the only way I could have got the job done. Thank You very much!! Job done for $10.00 The most important part for me was how to release the clips attached to the back of the glove box.
Excellent how-to video! Ordered and received the filter. Took about 10 minutes to replace the filter on my 2000 Avalon. It fit perfectly, and every screw and wire was just as described.. Thanks for the filter and the video!
i been tried to replace the cabin filter for my 2000 Toyota Avalon before, but i was unable to replace it, with your video, now i could replace it, thank you so very much!
IMPORTANT: people with 99 and earlier Avalon ! These years do NOT have cabin air filters under the glove box. HOWEVER. There is a "mesh screen filter" behind the two main center air vents. my 99 Avalon air vents had barely any air flow coming out ! So I removed the console trim piece and 2 air vents. about 10 inches back, shine a flashlight, and you will see the mesh screen. This screen eventually gets clogged and ruins the air flow coming out of the vents. So, I removed the mesh screen. I took a long screw driver and punctured the screen several times, on both sides of the mesh. Then I took long needle nose, and pulled out the entire mesh piece. guess what ....now the air blows SUPER fast and hard from the vents. and ice cold ! If you still wanted some filtration, you could put some dust mesh filter on the back side of the vents. but if you have low flow ...this is why !
This mesh screen is likely there to prevent debris from falling into your blower motor, so we do not recommend doing so, as excess debris could result in damage to the blower.
@@filterheads the blower motor is on the OTHER side. AND, the air pressure is moving in the opposite direction. So debris falling into the blower motor is highly unlikely.
This video is spot on! The screw and bolt on the bottom are a bit of a pain to get to, but otherwise it's not too bad a job. Thanks so much for the video! I was banging my head for a little while trying to figure out how to get the glove box out.
Nicely done video. Just a heads-up, I was able to get my filter out through the two wires without needing to disconnect either one. That saved me a little less fuss, and next time, I won't have to bother with taking the negative cable off the battery. Oh boy was my filter dirty, caked and full of little leaves.
1996 Toyota Avalon does it have a cabin filter? This car has such few miles and runs really good other than paint and great shape. Thank you for your time...
I'm purchasing a used 2004 Avalon XLS. I'm assuming cabin air filter will need changed ASAP! Is there a good method to thouroughly clean the cavity once I remove the existing filter & before I replace w the new filter? I'm guessing shop vac nozzle is too large? Thanks!
Yes using a shop vac is the best process. It is good to vacuum out the cars carpets too because that will help with the smell when the cars air is on circulate.
Does the 1997 Toyota Avalon model even have a cabin air filter?I have had the glove box of Park in order to better access the blower motor replacement. after removal of the glove compartment I realized all I needed to do was drill a small hole in the plastic snap reinforcement piece to allow access for the third screw of the blower motor assembly tightening. I know that I could have and should have had I known to replace the cabin air filter if it exists in the 97 model I certainly would have done so. And now with the current virus 19 going around, I absolutely see the importance of replacing the filter. However that filter will not filter out most bacteria orEspecially viruses as they are much smaller than bacteria. One would have to obtain a hospital-grade HIPAA filter that is comfortable and sizeable to the frame, however that type of filter would put extra load on the fan air movement and blower motor so you would had want to be careful on what you do and not run the fan on the highest speed. you you would best obtain a better or powerful blower motor if you were going to put a better titrant filter in.
The 1997 Toyota Avalon did not come with the cabin air filter option. The cabin air filter option became more common in cars in the early 2000s. Recirculating the air in your car will make it so no outside air will come in. Vacuuming your carpet will also help with smells in your car.
On my 2006 Avalon I didn't have to remove any screws, just pinch the sides of the glove box towards to center to release it and it hangs down, then you have full access to the filter. When putting the glove box back up make sure the cylinder piece hanging down (don't know what it is) on the right side goes up in the hole otherwise the glove box won't close more than half way at it hits that. Literally to 3 minutes to replace the filter.
Same with the 2007 - just pinch the sides of the box. Not sure what the video is for exactly, but if you've got a 2007 Avalon, it's 3 minutes as described above.
The air flow arrow points down to indicate the direction the air is actually flowing. It should also be noted that the arrows on the OEM filter can be misleading if you intend to replace them with an aftermarket filter. The OEM filter has "UP" arrows, whereas aftermarket filters show air flow arrows. If using an aftermarket filter, the airflow arrow should be pointing DOWN. This will make sense to you when you pull out the old filter and notice that all the debris (leaves, bugs, etc.) are on top of the filter. Therefore, the airflow travels downward, through the filter and into the blower vanes.
My 2003 Avalon XLS did not have the airbag connector or the panel at top of glovebox. Is there a different config or could this vehicle not have passenger airbag???
The Model shown in this video is a 2002 Toyota Avalon. The 2003 may of been designed better to where you didn't have to remove airbag connector to reach the cabin air filter.
I have a real mystery noise at highway speeds which no one seems to be familiar with. At 70-75mph a squeal or screatching noise happens. It sounds like it's centered under the dash and it continues as long as you maintain those speeds. It sounds like the loudest sqeaky fan you've ever heard. One thing I do know is that turbulence DOES affect it. When I was drafting a motorhome the noise almost quit. And when another vehicle passes in the other direction, the sudden wind makes it screach louder for that instant. People have mentioned that something on the firewall may have become unsealed, letting air cause this "whistling", but it doesn't sound like a "whistle" so much. Not like a bad fit on a weatherstrip or such. I'm swapping the cabin filter just to try and pinpoint the location of the noise. Any ideas?
You put in a clean filter so there is less media in it could be louder because of more air flow. If something fell down in the fan this could cause it to be louder or if the filter is not fully installed it can make for an off noise.
If it just says UP on the side of the filter then the filter is installed up. If the arrow on the side says AIR FLOW with an arrow then the arrow points down. This video link will explain the difference between and up arrow and an air flow arrow. Video Link: ua-cam.com/video/B2LYwK7TsQA/v-deo.html
@Rahima John: Not sure what "piisof" means, or what else you refer to. The job will be a lot easier if I ever do it again, but the first time on a 20-year old car isn't a piece of cake--parts tend to stick together after a few years. The lower left screw would not come loose from the glove compartment, though it did unscrew and screw back into the frame (defect? or age of car?), and pressure needs to be applied in particular spots to remove the glove compartment that the video did not clearly specify, and only after finally getting it off and seeing how things attach. Still, I spent a little over an hour and saved about $130 (quoted price), so thank you Filterheads!

Thank you for uploading this. I have the exact same car and this helped me be able to change the filter myself.

Only newer Toyotas have pinchable glove box sides. On older models, like this one, you need to do quite a bit of wrenching.
Omg, it looks like insulation in there. What was that stuff?
Appears to be a mix of insulation and various dirt and other debris.
Well done video but I must say compared to changing out cabin air filters on other cars Toyota really made it hard here.
Yes, they made it for the everyday user.
This was perfect! Thank you so much.

Do I need to disconnect the battery before doing this job? I’m just worried the airbag will explode in my face.
Yes, you can disconnect the battery before doing this install.

It would be best to take it into a mechanic. It could be something simple but with out seeing the car in person it is hard to know what it would be.
Same here. Just replaced mine. The video makes it look and sound a lot easier than it was.
i replaced the filter no problem but now my blower motor sounds rough as i turn it up, what did i do ?
You put in a clean filter so there is less media in it could be louder because of more air flow. If something fell down in the fan this could cause it to be louder or if the filter is not fully installed it can make for an off noise.
Toyota could have made this task much easier. In later models, they did.
Still a better process than Nissan models.

The only thing I would change about this video is: I wouldn't recommend wearing gloves just to use a screwdriver. It makes it harder.
LOL very true but wearing the gloves help with the cameras color balance. With out the gloves the hands would look like they are glowing.
