Not nearly as impressive as the garbage man carrying the astros.
Still, especially that year, I'd say the Giants bullpen was a bigger strength than the starters. Remember Jeremy Affeldt got the win in that game 7. Kind of emblematic of how the core of Giants relievers carried the team through those years. Lincecum was already not his best by '10, and Cain was solid but declining after his perfect game. Even Madbum only pitched once every 5 days (other than playoffs).

The ‘16 Cubs also had one of the all-time defenses, I believe setting a record for lowest opponent BABIP in a season. Two Gold Glovers, too. Rizzo, Bryant, Baez, Russell, Fowler, and of course Heyward were all plus defenders

Although the biggest strengths the White Sox in 2005 was their starting pitching, however even though their lineup was apparently known for small ball the time, they actually hit the most home runs in the entire league that year. I'm actually from California but I seem to remember the White Sox a lot from that 2005 season, although that may have been because that was when I was really first getting into the MLB. That White Sox team was definitely one of the most dominant in every area that has won a World Series.

@@jeffenson9969 Doc wasn't on the 08 Phils. We had Brett Myers who was made our closer the prior season in 07, a 45-year old Jamie Moyer, and Joe Blanton. While Hamels carried us, it was not the most threatening rotation but it all came together because they just happened to pitch well when it was needed. If you ask me, our bullpen was a bigger strength than our rotation. Lidge literally had a perfect season and didn't blow a save.
I think this shows that contact hitting plays really well in the tournament. The unpredictable nature of batted balls in a small sample allow teams that make more contact a greater spectrum of outcomes. Also contact hitting helps when you’re facing the best of the best in terms of pitching.
Two years later and you have players like Spencer Strider who complain that contact outside of a miss/K or HR is only luck.

Astros lost because every time Max Sherzer or Stephen Strasburg pitched, the Nationals fell like they could face any pitcher in the league and like their chances of winning. Because those two normally kept them in games and the offense was good enough to overcome 2 or 3 runs either pitcher would normally give up. And that confidence was developed throughout the regular season. Disregarding the Cardinal due to inexperience in starting pitching, Nats beat Wainwright, Kershw (2), Verlander (2), Cole to win the WS.

The strength of that "mystery" Marlins teams was defense ... solid up the middle from Pudge to Pierre and
very good defensive middle infielders and solid 1b an LF defense as well. They simply did not commit the
errors that would have given deeper teams extra chances.
In regards to the 2006 WS, the Cardinals didn’t have all of their position players healthy at the same time for the entire season. They’ll say they got there in the final week, but Rolen was playing through shoulder issues that affected his offense, got him benched in the NLDS for a game, & led to the rift between him & LaRussa that lasted for the rest of their careers.
Getting the offense 90% healthy by the final week, the Astros having worse health issues that season, & Carpenter, Suppan, & Weaver lead the rotation was the keys in October.
Plus Adam Wainwright was put into the closer’s role as a rookie for an injured Isringhausen & was lights out.

Not reallly, Judge,Gary,Severino,Gleyber,Ursshela,Hicks,Gardener,Paxton,Kahnle,Happ, were all either traded for it drafted and developed through the farm system. Also DJ wasn’t paid a ton of money and we didn’t give him a ton of money.
Late 90s didn’t have any power hitters besides guys past their prime (chili Davis, strawberry, justice) all their guys could hit 30 HR, but were not HR hitters at all, especially for the time. Posada, jeter, O’Neil, Martinez, knaublach, brosius, etc. they were more like the giants in that their pitching staff was all about playoff mode- pettite, cone, Clemens, Wells, el duque, irabu, and of course Mo- most of them were mediocre during the regular season but turned it on in postseason. They started getting power hitters and went o the playoff drought at the same time arod, Soriano, matsui, etc. also, you can’t forget how their field helped LH batters HR totals (granderson and Gardner perfect examples)
Since 02 yes. The dynasty Yanks were a top of the line pitching team...starters and pen...No true ace tho. The lineup was a high walk, high average and contact w/ moderate or even low HRs.
After 01,when they couldn't fuckin hit off anyone not named Kim, they became a league average pitching team with a high walk, high HR slugging lineup. And won the division bc of their offense and Mariano. But this version of the Yanks coulda won a couple rings with a few more bounces in their favor.

The pistons are fun for a second but to have a long period of it makes the sport suck. Most baseball teams are built like basketball teams. They have strengths and the hope the other side of the ball doesnt f it up. The giants had no right to win the 2014 world series but MAD carried them. That awesome to see. Teams that make every out a chore to get make it very often. That is what I felt the Yankees dynasty stretch did so well.
Royals were a very unique team in 2014 and 2015. Not only the bullpen, but you should have mentioned their batting average with RISP or timely 2 out hits were a huge factor. They were clutch and resilient despite looking pretty average on paper.

The 2002 Angels were a team where you couldn't get anyone out. 1 thru 9. They weren't going to hit the ball to Yorba Linda, but a single here, a first to third run, a walk here, a double there, and all of a sudden you're down 2-3 runs. A speedster like Figgins. Washburn and rookie Lackey. Setup guy Donnelly. Closers like Percival and Rodriguez. Dependables like Glaus and Salmon. Erstad coming into his own. I mean, talk about a complete team.

Giants in 2014 to me was Bumgarner and a strong bullpen. In games Bumgarner didn't start, most of the starters got creamed. Only in the division series were the starters who weren't Bumgarner good and actually Jake Peavy pitched better than Bumgarner in his start that series. I say probably Bumgarner, Petit, and Affeldt were the keys to winning that world series.
Don’t forget the clutch hitting of Pablo Sandoval, Hunter Pence and Mike Morse. Without them, we don’t score....period.

Just a bit of context for the 2006 Cardinals, which on paper look like an underwhelming championship team. They basically had 80 + percent of the core that had won over 100 games in 04 and 05. But a rash of injuries, slumps, and three separate seven-game losing streaks jeopardized their chances to even make the playoffs. However, when the postseason began, every important player was healthy, and having Chris Carpenter healthy in the postseason the Cardinals won 2 World Series and went to three NLCS in the four years a healthy Carpenter pitched in the postseason for the birds. Also, every championship team has unexpected contributors, and after a dismal offensive campaign, Yadier Molina was the best, consistent offensive player the Cardinals had for all three postseason Series in 06. KeyBank contributions from players like so taguchi, and Scott spiezio helped. But above all, the most extraordinary contribution they had was Anthony Reyes out dueling Justin Verlander in game 1. So basically, you had a 90-plus win caliber team that had a lot of bad luck during the dog days of the season, but had a lot of good fortune in the postseason.

Just gonna throw in my Marlins-biased 2 cents: I just wanna add to the Marlins in 03, IDK if the stats that specific year back it up (defensive statistics were sparse back in 03 iirc), but I wanna say that was possibly the best DEFENSIVE infield ever, with Derrek Lee, Luis Castillo, Alex Gonzalez, and Mike Lowell, all of whom at least at some point in their careers were arguably the best at their position, defensively. Then again, I haven't gone back and looked since better stats have come out to see if that's actually true or not.
AND, similarly, you mentioned the 09 Yankees having possibly the best offensive infield ever...yeah, you're probably right actually, but damnit if the Marlins the year before weren't close. Jorge Cantu was 1 HR shy of giving them an infield in which ALL FOUR hit at least 30 HRs.
Looking at the stats, the 2003 Marlins had the third least amount of errors in the league that year but the advanced stats don't seem to treat them kindly. I think starting pitching was the big strength. Three starters got hurt early on but D-Train was called up and Beckett came back and made it elite down the stretch and in the playoffs. Manager change also factored in as well.
1999 Mets had best defensive infield ever. Even the 2009 Yankees were a great defensive infield. But what made the 2003 Marlins special was having Pudge leading the way. Had Pudge stayed, Marlins would have made playoffs in 2004 and 2005 (I did like Paul LoDuca but he was not Pudge)

Starting pitching is TOTALLY the most valuable. The cubs and the Indians should show that the most. Those teams didn’t have great offenses, they as a whole weren’t elite in fielding and defense, but they both had elite level starting pitching, and the way the postseason is set up, 3 great starting pitchers can steal wins from teams that were objectively better in the regular season. Just think about it, teams that win the first game (or first 2 especially) have a much greater chance to win, and if you have a 1-2 punch of cy young candidates, you can get by with an average or even below average offense and still be up 2-0
The strange thing with the 2021 Braves is that the bullpen became their strength pretty much right at playoff time. They probably blew more saves and late leads than anyone else during the first half of the season, and then they suddenly started to light it up. Their #1 strength would probably be that power infield of Freeman, Riley, Albies and Swanson all hitting at least 25 HRs and all being clutch hitters in general.
Hate how slept on the giants championships are. That dynasty run will never be matched again anytime soon

Astros biggest strength: the center field camera and trash can
The most important thing is baseball is pitching, you can't be a true contender without a shutdown pitching staff. Obviously that's not the only thing you need but I feel a killer rotation/bullpen sets a team up for a championship more than a great lineup.
I don't know. Outside of Madison Bumgarner, Giants pitching in 2014 wasn't much better than the league average. On your theory, the Nationals should have won at least the NL pennant that year with their rotation of five starters each with an ERA lower than the league average, four of them with an ERA below 3.15, and that was before they signed Max Scherzer. Their bullpen was even pretty solid. But we see where that all got them, a loss in the NLDS to the aforementioned Giants.
One thing we do know is that postseason baseball is a weird bird--maybe only 25% of the time does the best team in baseball for the regular season actually win the championship, which is about the lowest percentage in any American pro sport.

This video doesn't mention what I think was possibly the greatest strength of the 2016 Cubs: their fielding. That's right, their fielding. With Gold Glovers Anthony Rizzo at first base and Jason Heyward in right field, the flashy infielder Javy Baez, and rangy players at shortstop (Addison Russell), second base (Ben Zobrist), and center field (Dexter Fowler), the Cubs may have set an all-time Major League record for defensive efficiency rating, the percentage of potential outs converted into actual outs. The Cubs' fielders were responsible for lowering their pitching staff's ERA at least half a run per 9 innings. This worked especially well for starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks, allowing him to do what he does best: make batters get themselves out with soft contact and ground balls.
"Their back up catcher was pretty much immortal." Now, that--that's something. I am definitely using that the next time my family talks about the Cubs.

2001 Diamondback had great pitching with Batista, Schilling, and Johnson..The 2003 Marlins had a lot of heart and good pitching with Brad Penny, Josh Beckett, and Dontrelle Willis..2003 Marlins came back in all their Playoff series..The 2009 Yankees had great hitters in Matsui, Damon, Cano, A-Rod, and Swisher..The 2010, 2012, and 2014 SF Giants had great pitching in Tim Lincecum, Brian Wilson, and Madison Bumgarner..The 2016 Cubs had great defense..Those were strengths of those teams ⁉🎩🏟💺🏆🌇🏙🌆⚾📚

2015 KC: WS Game 1 bottom of 9th - Royals down 1. Gordon homers to dead-center in one of the leagues biggest parks, OFF OF FAMILIA. Royals win in extras. I'm talking clutch. Virtually the same team that lost to San Fran in 2014 WS. That year they were the wild card and swept every team to win the AL Pennant with an epic 9-8 win over Oakland to win the wild-card game. They constantly came through with what they needed to win, pressuring the defense, stealing bases, etc. Didn't Gordon lead the league in outfield assists? Hosmer, Moustakas, Escobar, Cain, Perez, Zobrist.... and yes Herrera and Wade Davis were lights out. It was beautiful to watch.
Pitching depth is the most important in the playoffs
2020 Dodgers: As much as I want to say 60 game mickey mouse season, their real big strengths were Corey Seager and Julio Urias as a reliever.
2021 Braves: Eddie Rosario, Jorge Soler, Ian Anderson, and the back end of the bullpen: AJ Minter, Tyler “Nutsak” Matzek, and Will Smith.
