When your virtuosity is such that you can simply play in real-time whatever your mind comes up with. It's called playing "free", the instrument is not in your way. Bravo George.
There is no one who can stand up to Benson. He is just in a different class and zone. The jazz world understates and underestimates him unjustly only because he ventured into a new sound in 1976, forgetting what he achieved as a straight-ahead jazz guitarist in the days of Mcduff and Kessel. The thing is with this Monk tune is that every note Benson plays, is played with precision, clarity - and soul. And then those chromatic runs. The tone of the guitar is top drawer and despite the fact that this was from a concert probably more than 30 years ago. Benson is genius.
He didn't forget.. he wanted the bread !..
This is the reason why Very few, IF ANY, can stand up to GB's virtuosity. They'll only realise it when he's not around anymore one day. But, long live George Benson - the king of jazz guitar
Like the legends who preceded him Wes, Django, Christian, George takes the guitar to places it’s never been. The virtuosity is astounding. Every note full of soul and passion.
What a MIND Mr Benson possesses!
pure magic man..wow
After all, George Benson is in a class by himself.
The quartet is wonderful. Also, Aaron Scott, on drums, brings an unreal athmosphere ans a wicked groove! An all times great!
So good... George make more straight ahead records!!!
..now THAT was sweet....a Master at work.....
George handed me this guitar once and said go on and use it..I took it home and had it in my possession for almost 3 years then out of the blue seleno Clarke called me and said 'George wants his guitar back' ,I was a little surprised, I thought he'd given it to me but what could l say?..seleno came by a couple of days later and took the guitar 😆
Are you the Ed Cherry I saw playing in Dizzy Gillespie's band at Ronnie Scott's all those years ago?
😂 I’ll raise your frustration, Ed… Circa 1991, I was over at his house in Jersey and he takes me in his closet full of guitar cases. My heart is pounding and he gets up on a step-stool and starts handing me cases… L5s, Johnny Smiths, Gretch, this and that. He settled on an L5 and said, “Take it in the living room and warm it up.” I’m salivating thinking that he’s about to grant me one of his guitars, and probably not playing much of anything because… it’s friggin’ George Benson!!! Then he says, “You like it? It’s nice, huh? I’ll sell it to you for $5,000.”
After I picked my heart up off the floor, it was back to the practice room…
GB has been my inspiration on my chosen instrument ever since I was a child……his touch, tone, timing……exquisite……..for me it’s long been Wes , GB……and everyone else.
Just "WOW"!
True master, Benson…
All you can do is trust your Self win them real McCoy 🎹 changes come along🎶🎸
I wish they had recorded together. Great chemistry.
They didn't? Then this must have been a jam session in that case.
I'm just poking at you.
素晴らしい!
Dude goes off. So so amazing.
Round Midnight: Thelonious Monk was the poet who wrote the bluesy poem without words.
Wes Montgomery's version lifts it up, making entertainment out of it. George Benson puts a power trip over it, dressed like a policeman, rendering a show of force.
Wes' is the most emotive if you ask me.
Edit: From a second listen, I'll have to say that this just might be the more emotive rendition of the two covers.
It took me a while (years, actually) to get to listening to another version from the original and the same with Wes Montgomery's. Intriguingly, George Benson was my earliest direct influence to jazz (and Louis Armstrong) but today, I'll shout Wes' name anywhere. C'est la vie.
GEORGE!!!!!!!!!!!
In addition to his effortless virtuosity and amazing sense of time - GB is the most soulful Jazz Guitarist of all and accidently became the greatest R&B Guitarist ever also...
Brilliant Guitar Genius .
SO TRUE...
this not their best "round midnight"....or the sound quality was a mess..but George had McCoy Tyner on piano ..maestro extraordinaire..tastefull as always
Incredible playing by the one and only, George Benson. A true guitar master!!
Genius
Like Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and Jimi Hendrix, Mr. Benson had the blues in his heart. Beautiful sounds with the master, McCoy Tyner.

Beautiful reading!
George Benson - The Great One !
Lovely drifting...
That's beautiful)
Thanks for sharing. I heard the band 1989 in Athens, GR.
gb is insane, how he tries to squeeze every bit of harmonic information in there. and his guitar playing is so present compared to most muffled jazz guitar tones. only wish his comping was louder on all recordings. i know it's about making room but he does such nice things with it
His harmonic sense is scary!
many thanks indeed
Te Amo Maestro, salud, abrazo gigante desde Santiago del Estero,Argentina.
A guitar genius at work
absolutely amazing!
Scary 🎸chops😬
He plays like there is no tomorrow. 😊
Nails it
So beautiful
The Master
This quatuor is so good...
Never left a comment on this one either, George Benson, McCoy Tyner Quartet. ON MY PLAYLIST ALSO.. BEAUTIFUL 😍❤️🔥
Greatest of all time, GB.
Benson is one of the all time best and a number one guitar influence on me for a number of my younger years.
Incredible.
George Benson Wes ¡.Awesome ❤
this is so fantastic that is simply not real
: )
I generally dislike the typical front pickup jazz tone. But GB brightens it up, much like Jim Hall did.
Dawg Jim Hall had one of the darkest tones in jazz guitar lol. One of the greatest though
There should have been a DVD release featuring this quartet.
Monster guitarist, the inconceivably consummate axe-man.
Величайший гитарист в мире. Любимый в России. Наряду с Маховишну и Димеолой.

Hell yeah! The only Round Midnight version that does not sound dissonant af!
This is show music.
Does anyone know what planet George is from? ….because his playing is ‘out of this world’!
A planet called *”Pittsburgh”* 😉
@@SalimSivaad 😁
check out another version of this on youtube with Peter Bernstein.
Thanks for that info! 👍
2:08 - что это было? Он так быстро подстроил струну? И не пришлось поправлять?
Да ... и после этого он улыбнулся ...

I really don’t think God himself could play any better... this is as good as it gets folks imho !
I don’t know Wes was pretty dam good!
@@broskoone YEAH, he was! So's George!!
What happened to the melody?
It went through some changes.
You’re new to jazz, huh?
Last time I saw him was at the Hampton Jazz Festival - 2017 I think. He was touted as the headliner in print and media, along with - of all people, Fantasia. Turns out he was only allowed to do an hour-long set and she closed out the show - with her quivering lip. What a disappointment. If I wanted to see Fantasia, I would have gone to a Fantasia show. After ten minutes I was walking out the door. May as well had burned that couple hundred dollars using lighter fluid as the accelerant.
The backing is too busy for George to cut through fully. He’s a good drummer, but should have toned it down a bit.
Could be the bassist. He had a terrible tone live, also too loud through his amp; heard him many times w/ McCoy, and always wished it was Jimmy Garrison instead on bass! .
Too many notes.
Badly mixed. Soloist hard to hear cause piano‘s too loud.
I think it's the drums that are too loud. Have to listen hard to hear GB's greatness.
You're not wrong
Dumb
Are you just commenting for the sake of commenting........ 😃
What an ass......
I don't think that it's strictly a question of the mix. McCoy's style just doesn't mix well with Benson's. McCoy is blood, guts, and thunder. George is velvet and cologne. Those don't go together.
Cacaphonous drivel.
Then you should be able to do it.
Please let us know when you do, we need a good laugh.
@@herculesrockefeller8969 We all have different musical tastes. The ignorant ones don't try to understand the level of musicianship that was on stage at this show.
It’s called improvisation.
