Hmmm now im wondering! Maybe ill print one just to see 😅 Comparing the Lr and Ps versions together I honestly havent noticed much difference which is super interesting!
I shall definitely use this. Usually I fix framing and composition errors by cropping but now I can correct images where the framing is too tight. Cool...
Quite shocked how well this worked as I thought it would only be useful for landscape with its low complexity. However, I was able to extend a poorly cropped shot of my friend with the British Parliament buildings behind her. Thanks!!
The only issue is I found is using a screenshot gives you a very low res photo. In my case, about 865kb. Instead, I exported my processed NEF file as a proper jpg (eg 9meg) and opened it up in paint. I was able to expand the white background on the one edge requiring filling. I then reimported the modified file and used the same process described by you. The only difference is that it had a white background instead of your grey. The same process worked great and now I have a high res file to boot.
awesome! yes exporting definitely is the best for increasing resolution :) For printing, heading into photoshop is probably better but hey, this is easy!
Could you please clarify what you mean by "applying an edit"? I apologize for my lack of experience with Lightroom, as I am new to using this software and feeling quite overwhelmed.
The resolution of a screenshot is not anywhere close to the resolution of even a 24 MP sensor let a loan a higher MP sensor. You're going to end up with tiny unprintable pics only good for online viewing.
Hi Mark! Actually the workaround is super easy. You can screenshot the image like this and upscale the resolution before importing back into lightroom. Takes 5 secs in preview on a mac. Ofc the resolution of your screen will make a big difference in how high res the initial screenshot is, and there are definitely limitations there. On my retina mac I'm finding it more than enough, but I don't normally print my work, only share online!
@@SignatureEdits Sorry but if you believe that an upscaled screenshot will have the same resolution as an image from 24mp sensor then I'm not sure what to say. Yes this would be great for Facebook or Instagram but nothing else.
@@artdawggy It all depends on use case. There are 16mp photos printed onto billboards and they look fine. The retina display on a mac is about 254ppi, so a screenshot upscaled would probably be just fine as a print under 16" or so. But for sure, if your goal is a 4ft print, open it in photoshop!
I've just tried it in Lightroom Mobile, and at the end merged my original subject onto the expanded version to maintain maximum quality of the subject using SuperimposeX.
Intriguing post, Ryan. Will have to give this a try, just for fun, if nothing else. So, the image resolution of the Gen AI fill is less than the resolution for the rest of the pic? When exporting, what resolution applies? Can new pic be upscaled? BTW, general Q for you about pinned YT comments: noticed that your own pinned comment has a love icon - viewers can’t do that, I understand, so you “love” your own comment? Kinda brash😊,
Hey Paul! So the resolution of the new photo is going to be whatever the size of the screenshot is you upload into lightroom. BUT you can easily fix this by opening the screenshot and resizing it before importing into lightroom... In theory, you could actually use this method to create a HIGHER res file from your original photo (or w/e res you want) On a mac it's super easy - Open the screenshot in preview, then go to tools > resize and select your preferred resolution. And yeah, YT algorithm is weird and goes by how much engagement a post has. If there isn't a pinned comment, you get docked. If there isn't a hearted comment, you get docked... So even though it makes zero sense, I generally just do it on my comment when I first post the video to please the YT overlords 😅
Very clever. What a Fantastic workaround and Hack Ryan. Its like its big brother Photoshop but is only useful for screen or photos for social media, which is great. As long as you dont try printing. If you want to print there are a couple of guys on YT offerring a free workaround to get better resolution, so I`d probably go that route. But clearly if youve found this, it cant be long before Adobe will pick up on it and include it soon in an update. Cheers Ryan love your stuff.
Cheers Steve! I think you are absolutely right. Im not sure if adobe is planning to add this, or if they intentionally held it back so that photoshop doesn’t lose all its features! Time will tell :)
this is why so many people don't trust photography anymore. To me, and many others, this crosses the line between adjusting highlights and shadows, colors, etc to reflect reality, versus making phony photos
Thanks! Yes it would work, but you would need to take a screenshot of the exported jpg to extend the frame beyond just the image... Generative AI in lightroom only works within the frame of the photo, so that's the trick that let's you work "outside" of your image to expand the shot!
@@kapilbhallafoto Not necessarily! You could export the jpg and paste it onto a larger canvas using Paint, Photoshop or Canva etc... Then save that out at a higher resolution and import back into Lr. But at that point it probably makes a lot more sense just to head into photoshop, as you're no longer saving a lot of time!
@@CrawfordHeisz Interestingly enough, edits like this have been going on for decades... It's just that they were done by photoshop artists for campaigns with big budgets and took hours per photo to pull off. AI isn't doing anything new here... It's just making that process extremely easy, fast & available to everyone. So ironically enough, the hot topic debate is over AI... when really at it's core, it's the same debate since photoshop first came out :)
Yeah this technology isn't anything new, other than the fact that it's just machine generated now rather than someone painstakingly making it themselves. If you think photography with fake backgrounds is new you're in for a surprise
Please dont do this if you use raw or dont want to loose resolutions... a screenshot vs a raw or evek a full size jpeg from a dslr/mirrorless you loose a lot... just go straight to photoshop
All depends what you're trying to do! For sharing on social media, this method is 100% A-Okay :) But if you're printing a 36 inch canvas, sure, photoshop will work better for you! You can always resize the jpg so that the generated file is larger too :)
@SignatureEdits of course, nowadays everyone is on their phone so yeah your point make sense lol!! Maybe it's just me but I find that generative ai and the remove tool are much more performant on photoshop than on LR.
@@Digit0wL Yeah definitely not just you! I think they Lr one is either intentionally "dummed down" to make photoshop more appealing, OR to make it faster in order to be more efficient for batch editing. Knowing adobe it might be both lol.
you didn't get the picture right, don't cheat and take real pictures instead. you use pictures like this in your portfolio you are a bad photographer. someone hire a photograph they want that person to take real pictures and show them their real work to see what they can do with a camera not with software. if you expand a studio back drop, no problem but this is just wrong it's creating a picture not taking a photograph.
Maybe so! It might just be my computer, but I've found the Lr way takes about 1/10 the processing time, so perhaps for people who hate photoshop or have an older computer? But for people who use Ps and are familiar with it, by all means it has more tools inside!
You could create an automation action in Photoshop to expand your photo so that you can use the original and get a tiff or psd back. On this you could then use your Lightroom trick.
@@SignatureEdits whaaat - 5 minutes. New action (which records it), extend the canvas 100% in both directions. Stop the action (saved). Then create a droplet from the action to use in LR

I DID hit that like button, because you saved my day. thank you!
Which do you prefer using? This LR shortcut, or Photoshop?!
photoshop it gives me more control
Maybe it's faster because it's working with a smaller file, but I don't really know if file size is relevant for AI stuff
Could be! All I know is it is about 10x the speed :)
