- On November 25th 2022, the Brazilian Army selected the B2 Centauro as their new Fire Support Vehicle under the VBC CAV program (Viatura Blindada de Combate Cavalaria). This marks a new milestone for the Brazilian Army, as it will not only operate fire support vehicles for the very first time, but also mark a significant step towards a modern Brazilian Army. The Brazilian Army currently plans to acquire 98 B2’s, of which 78 are to be assembled locally, in order to replace their current fleet of EE-9 Cascavels.

From cascavels to centauros is quite the jump
Very quite. Until the Leos be upgraded and/or a new MBT be acquired, Centauros II will be the most advanced and capable armored vehicles of Brazilian Army.
Cascavel has not the same function of the Centauro... It is not a replacement!!
@@thiagoribeiro-nq3tm I think he meant that centauro will be the most advanced vehicle Brazil will operate.

Looks like that'll be a great acquisition for Brazil. Really love the way modern wheeled armour is proliferating. Some great advantages over tracked vehicles depending on the use case.
Brazil is well aware of those advantages since WWII, where it only used wheeled vehicles.
I drove a Centauro in 1992, its great fun, good for Brazil.
Awesome take on the subject, congratulation Tank Encyclopedia team!
The inicial batch bought is 98, althogh, Brazil secured the option to buy other 221 B2s. Such quantity has to be taken into account cause if Brazil wants to keep the same structure it has right now, it would need to replace all of it's 409 EE-9 Cascavel, I think it's highly unlikely that the brazilian army will keep just the inicial 98.
Allthough Brazil has/had (they never changed the number from what ther originally purchased, a number are definately written off by now) about 400 EE-9s, only about 110 are actually in operation in the units. The rest is reserves spread over the units. 98 is pretty much the the little reduced number of EE-9s in active operation. The 221 B2s would mean that Brazil would actually get about 120 B2s as reserves unless they start adding more cavalry units.
But considering the current build schedule, those 221 B2s would take until like 2060 to 2070 to get built sadly.
@@blasekiller9733 As far as I knew, Brazil had originally 600 EE-9, and in 2010 409 were operational and 98 were being modernized.
About only 110 being operational I never heard of it.
@@henryquecabral9357 basicaly, they bought 409 from Engesa at the time in total. Then you just start looking at the regiments and squadrons that actually use EE-9s and their organisation. Both cavalry regiment and squadron each operate a set number of EE-9s in platoons. Put those together and you get to the number in active service, whcih was around 110-ish. I did the calculation for a future article to be released on Tanks Encyclopedia.
I checked my article, brazil has combined 23 cavalry regiments and squadrons. Each of these has 3 platoons in which each platoon has a section of 2 EE-9s, meaning 6 EE-9s in a regiment/platoon atleast in active operation. Multiply this by the amount of regiments and squadrons and you have 138 EE-9s in active use (correction from my 110) and the rest is reserves.
@@blasekiller9733 Thank you so much for your research! Do you have a link for your article? Sounds very interesting.
A excellent video. I'll just point out that "Nova Couraça" was the denomination of the taskgroup in charge of the preliminary studies to the modernization of armored vehicles of Brazilian Army. When the program was approved by Army Staff, the name stuck for a period, but was changed, when both programs, Nova Couraça and Guarani, were merged in one Strategic Program called "Forças Blindadas" (Armored Forces) which encompass all vehicles described in video (EE-9, Leo 1A5 mods and VBCav [Centauro II], IFV, MBT and SP Arty acquisitions).
At last, it should be noted that with Centauro II acquisition, EE-9 modernization will be reassessed based on costs, because it should not exceed 30% of the acquistion cost of a new Centauro II.
Some points: saying that Centauro was pourposely build to be a FSV is an hell of understatement.
Centauro was pourpousely build to have the same high pressure gun used on MBT and to be able to use
It at any angle.
Other "guns" of FSV ( good try but seriously, let's try to find a single english word to translate autoblindo, please) even in 105mm are either low or medium pressure.
B-2 is just a further evolution of the vehicle, in some day even less brilliant than the original ( i.e. it's way taller and bulky due the need to have a protection against mines)
COME TO BRAZIL!
Your tank sucks
I am happy that centauro won because IVECO has its headquarters in my city and this contract could make them a bunch of money :)
Turin?
Friend, it is known that the program foresees an assembly line in Brazil, likely at the factory in Minas Gerais or in a new location, of the 98, 72 will have to be manufactured in Brazil
It's a great news to the Brazilian Army, our tanks are obsolete and we need a new design
Yeah. now we have arguably the best 8x8 in the world
Not exactly, Centauro is not a tank, not specifically, the centauro is an armored troop transport vehicle, they will not replace the Leopards, but the Cascavels, it's not a tank.
@@caninon7570 There are plans to replace the entire tank fleet with light vehicles in case the program to acquire new MBTs fail. The required specs for the new MBT have been posted for a while now but last I checked there haven't been any bids for the contract and ideias to replace all MBTs with light armored vehicles like the Centauro started poping up.
The problem is that thanks to our infrastrocture we can't have vehicles over 50t like Leopard 2 and Abrams. So far the only MBT that fits the requirements is the Type 10 but that one off the table since Japan can't export military hardware, Russian style vehicles are also off the table.
Ótima aquisição 🇧🇷
Nice ...analyzing the technical factors, without a doubt it is the best tank hunter today. Apparently, this tank acts as a reconnaissance and sniper, shoots and disappears with speed.
That was the best choice we made.
Surely it's a good choice, hoping that some politicians won't mess with it.
Centaur's hull could be used also for others vehicles, such as mortar/AT missiles carriers, command and support ones.
I think Brazil's 6x6 Guarani's hull can do this for a lower price. There are plenty of Guaranis in Brazilian army without even a machine gun on top. Brazil also purchased this year the Spike LR-2 ATGM.
The best there is. Thanks God the chinese one didn't have a chance! 😅

I'm happy to see the Centauro 2 being chosen, but part of me is sad that we'll never see the 8x8 Guarani ifv version being fielded.
The Centauro 2 IS the 8x8 Guarani. Iveco developed this specifically for the Brazilian specification, which means as much commonality with the 6x6 Guarani as possible. That was the objective of the 8x8 concept in the Guarani program.

@@rafaelschipiura9865 Centauro 2 was developed with Italian army specifications in mind to replace the B1 Centauro. Having said that, they are both part of an "enlarged family" and are linked to the same development line starting back with the B1, then the VBM Freccia and Guaranì (programs started in '98 and '99 respectively), SuperAV (on which the BAE ACV is based) and finally the Centauro 2. The Centauro 2 (and the SuperAV) enjoyed technology input from both the Freccia and Guaranì (eg. the H trasmission and the hull of the Centauro 2 are very much an evolution of B1 and Freccia, where the amphibious capability of the SuperAV are very much linked to the Guaranì development) and I'm sure that the Brasilian Centauros will have an high level of customization to respond to Brasilian requirements (and, indeed, already now a good portion of component used in the B2 were developed for the Guaranì, but this is mainly due to an industrial choice on the Iveco/Leonardo part and predate the Brasilian requirements, as I'm sure there are common component between Freccia and Guaranì for the same exact reason).
@@R00sc0 I don't mean more than the fact that it was developed after the Brazilian Army had this concept ready to go and that their input was incorporated into the project. I don't mean that the Guaraní was used as a base or that there was much technology incorporated into the project.
Italy has long and good military relations with Brazil, started with Beretta=Taurus, then the AMX plane and now the Centauro and Lince, which was even bought by the Russians!

awesome news 😃
I remember Brazil made a very good tank in the 1990's and it was in class with the Abrama and other great tanks but the cold war ended and it killed the sales but Brazil is very capable of making great armored vehicles on par with the U.S.,Germany ect.
Engesa Osório.
Mehh I'd place the Osorio in the same category as the C1 Ariete.
Not the heaviest armored MBTs out there. The Osorio is very light at 44 tons.
@@dwwolf4636But obviously, it is light, as it was manufactured in the 80s, when the abrams was also lighter, the difference today is that the abrams continues to be used, and modernized, while the osorium was not mass produced, as the Arabs ended up buying the Abrams instead of the Osorium, and Engesa went bankrupt, but if it was still being produced, it would be much heavier, modernized, it would be on par with the Abrams and Leopard, in fact, the Osorium systems were the best at the time☺

Boxer may have been a better buy in the long term. But I see why they went with Centauro 2. The plan to fit a new turret to Leopard 1 is a brilliant idea for Brazil. Especially if there is technology transfer and domestic production facility. They are a nation with huge potential yet to be realised. If they manage to stay away from the ChiComs Brazils time will come sooner rather than later.
Problem with buying the boxer is that you would mainly buy it for being multi purpose. The issue is that Brazil already has the Guarani 6x6 for this and only really needs the 8x8 for FSV duties, as such, better to go with a dedicated vehicle (especially consifering the Guarani and the B2 have a 29% parts commonality from the start)
This seems particularly weird to say with the ChiComs being the one sure power of the future.

Something very charming about the constant attempt to keep trying to make old ideas seem new by assigning fancier names to them. If you talk to the defense contractors trying to sell them, Fire Support Vehicles are cutting edge technology, when the basic concept is very old. There is not a huge leap from the Second World War's big guns on halftracks like Tank Destroyer M3 and these things; just purpose-built and with a turret, but the same basic idea of sticking a tank's gun on something much lighter than a tank to provide more mobile firepower.

Brazil has the cascavel, a brazilian vehicle, I don't understand why the army won't modernize it or make a completely new vehicle based on it, like a "cascavel 2". Even if it wouldn't be better than the centauro 2, it would be good to have a national vehicle instead of buying it from other countries.
Well, they are modernizing it, issue is that you can only do so much on a platform calculated for 13 tonnes and with an age of 50 years.
Regarding a new vehicle. The main issue is that Brazil has lost its defence industry in the 90s. So much so that they had to get the Italians in to help design and build their wheeled APC. The simple issue is that the knowledge isnt there nor any company capable of taking such a program on.
@@blasekiller9733 The main issue is interest. The thing is that the army doesn't care about being actually good and independent, that's why our defence is dependent on foreigners since foerever.
