  • UPDATE! ONE YEAR REVIEW - • Mower Update! - One ye...
    I had struggled with what battery mower to buy, after shopping for about three years, I FINALLY decided on this model. - RY401140US
    Unit comes with two 40V 6ah batteries, charger, bag, mulching plug, and a side discharge chute.
    Pros - Light, Fast, Quiet, Easy, Fantastic Cut, Low "spreading", two batteries, only needs one battery to run. "Made in USA" - Assembled in the USA with other parts from the rest of the world.
    Cons - No washout port, stupid headlight, drive motor was slow to engage, drive motor durability questionable.
    Overall, - FANTASTIC initial impressions, really well thought out product. Did a great job on the lawn.

    I bought mine because I am unable to use my left arm after an aneurysm, so this has a pusg button to get the plades started, and is light enough and has the self propell function to allow me to push it with my right hand and when there becomes a tough spot, i can use the self propell function to get over the tough spot and back to pushing again, which helps me to regain my function with practice... I too got sick and tired of the gas mowers always having some sort of problem every time my wife wanted to get some yardwork done and because im not fully functional to fix things, i decided to go electric with Ryobi which I've been using their tools for decades...

    Replacing a 20+ year-old cheapie gas mower because my old knees just don't like pushing it up the hill any more. I am a Makita guy but this Ryobi has the fold away storage that far better fits my over-stuffed storage shed than any of the self-propelled Maks. The fact it is cheaper is a bonus. Will likely pull the trigger in the next day or two. Thanks for the helpful video.

      Good luck, the fact that Ryobi still makes the same model today is a good sign its a solid design. Mine is still going strong this year on the original batteries. Its a blessing using it, your knees, ears and body will thank you. You don't feel beat up after mowing.

      @@danjreed Not sure youtube will allow me to post a link? But the video where he discusses this is at ua-cam.com/video/k-e4MGzSQkA/v-deo.html
      The reviewer is B&Z Reviews. The video is entitled "DON'T BUY a Ryobi 40V Self Propelled Mower.." and was posted a year ago.
      His self-propelled function died on him and, according to him, this is not an uncommon failure. He shows the documentation rating the SP motor for 200 hours.
      Yes, the Milwaukee is $$$ but it has what I want, i.e., very powerful as I have need sometimes to use the mower in what could be termed "abuse." Has the fold-up feature too.
      Glad you remain happy with your Ryobi. I might well have been as well, but, if the SP feature fails, I might as well have stuck with my old gas mower which is still going strong after 21 years.

    Hi, thanks for the video. And thanks, too, for making it clear that this is not the cross cut. So many reviews are for the cross cut that it’s hard to find one that’s not. Also, thanks for telling us the model number. Ryobi makes a couple different models, one for Home Depot, one for other stores, and I think it’s the dual battery that this model unique.
    The hesitation when engaging self-propelled might be a good thing. You’re right that it’s probably to prevent digging up the grass. I had a gas mower that would tear up the lawn.
    I’m replacing a 12 year old 20” Craftsman rechargeable mower and am ready to pull the trigger. I have 7 Ryobi 18volt tools and think I’m going with this mower so I can start replacing some of the older tools with 40 volt models.

    I like the mower. I have lots of trouble with gas powered anything, so this seemed like a better mower for me to buy. The only difficult problem I have is that it takes more than 2 batteries use to cut my lawn. So, if I try to recharge one battery after use the battery has to cool down before it will recharge. So that means I have to stop mowing and plug in the cooled down battery to charge. That is my only complaint that I really have.

    Nice review! When charging batteries, the fan shuts off when done. Bought this one two days ago, and it's up to 600 bucks but I think well worth it. No gas, easy storage, well designed, and at a perfect price point with the two batteries. And for what it's worth, I think the crosscut system isn't worth the additional 100 bucks. Again, nice job on this review.....

  • @RickHeaston
    @RickHeaston 5 місяців тому

    For the self-propelled feature, I see that there is a slider to set the "Max" speed. If you squeeze the propulsion bar slightly, does the mower just take off at the max speed or can you modulate its speed by how much pressure you apply to the self-propel control bar?

    • @danjreed
      @danjreed  5 місяців тому

      Its a solid state drive, so it "ramps" up to speed (quickly), it won't do a burnout unless you hold it back. If you push part way down, its like a gas pedal and will only creep. So yes, fully variable.

    Another of reviews mention the blade hitting the deck after encountering a bumb. Any experience with this? Also talk of mower not working well in high temperatures?

    • @danjreed
      @danjreed  2 роки тому

      I've hit a few big sticks with mine under full load, didn't impact the deck. The blade is THIN, it has much less mass than your regular blade.
      Hot weather (like really hot 100 plus degrees F) does impact the run time "a little", I've not done a formal test, but given how LiON batteries deal with heat, it only makes sense that the run time is shorter.

      Please keep the gas mower. This Ryobi mower will start to lose its battery life quickly. I can't cut more than 5-10 minutes before both batteries are down to 2 bars. I ran without using the self-propelled function. It wouldn't even start on 2 bars. Returned it to Home Depot today. The service desk told me that this is currently the most returned mower they sell. Expect a discontinued sale of this mower.

    How has this held up for you this year? I bought this exact model last summer. I am lucky to get 40 mins out of BOTH batteries. My plot is 0.26 acres (less than that of actual grass) and I need about 3.5 6AH batteries to mow my lawn. I use the side discharge and it clogs up every 5 feet if the grass is even the slightest bit damp. It takes me a good 4-5 hours to do my lawn because I have to wait for the batteries to cool down and then charge in between. I've decided to put it up for sale and find something else.

    • @danjreed
      @danjreed  2 роки тому

      I don't try to mow wet grass, unless I have to. Last weekend was a "damp" run with what I'd consider deeper than normal grass, the stuff that grows fresh and fast in the spring. The unit has been fine for me, I am able to finish my lawn, and even with deep grass (the mower spins up quicker), I still have left over power. I have only overheated a battery once, last fall going over DEEP piles of leaves.

    • @claytonl724
      @claytonl724 2 роки тому

      @@danjreed Interesting. Perhaps I need to look into whether my batteries are performing properly. The batteries ALWAYS need to cool down when I transfer them from the mower to the charger. I also don't try to mow wet grass, but the last 2 times I mowed have been terrible. Either the grass ends up too long, or I mow it wet. The weather in the mid-Atlantic in the spring is just awful. Thanks for the reply!

    • @danjreed
      @danjreed  2 роки тому

      @@claytonl724 I would look into the battery issue, my batteries never come off the charger "too hot" to work right away. There have been a few weekends where I have hot swapped batteries mid-charge cycle (this is because I forgot to charge them, so with two units I pop them on and off the charger as needed while mowing).
      And yea, mid-atlantic weather has been pretty wet so far, now looking two very hot days over the weekend. I worry that a lot of garden plants arent ready for extreme heat yet.
