Awesome story! I'm also Canadian and have been to Thailand 4 times between 2011-2015 before being diagnosed with terminal cancer and can say Thailand is an amazing place with beautiful people.. it too changed my life and perspective... I wish I could go back again but my treatment prevents me from doing so .. I miss Koh Phangan and Thailand 7/11's !!!!!!

I stayed on Koh Phangan for three months about 15 years ago. It was life changing for me too. moto sigh, Song Kran, snorkeling at Kho Ma, Sat nights out for supper in Tong Sala and then to Haad Rin for Full moon Party. Temple sauna at Wat Po. Yoga and beach walks at Haad yai. Best time of my life. Hope you get to make it back. 👍🏼

Seriously, though... there is a MASSIVE difference between overstaying a visa and a few nights in detention, and "Thai prison"... sorry, but NOBODY in their right maind makes that reflection after having been in an actual prison. It's bullshit. When you are puking every day from filthy food, losing wieght, people start marking you for rape and you decide to kill yourself... THEN you will have a clue what it feels like. You will not sleep for months after getting out. You will have PTST. Sorry, but it was the lowest point in my life, and to call Thai Prisoon a "learning experience" or "the best thing" that could have happen is just delusional.

Some real surprises in this story. I really appreciate hearing his story. All of the worst things that have happened to me in life have ended up having a positive side that ultimately outweighed the negative. Nonetheless, I don't want to repeat any of them. Very profound dialogue Dan, thanks! At 11:00 what Eric and you relate really resonated with my experience of 15 years of working in the oilfields of Alaska. and what some of the friends I worked with who spent years in prison, or in war, and how they compared our lives in corporate slavery as was worse than a prison sentence, because our working sentence was self-inflicted.
Dan, your story of loosing everything also reminded of the Greek parable of 'The Lotus Eaters' and had to question if "paradise" is a notion, a state of mind, an illusion or something tangible? I suppose when much of one's life is spent in servitude to something like the proverbial Lotus Tree, perhaps paradise is simply escaping the prison of the Lotus Tree and discovering life as sovereign from it:
    Wikipedia - The Lotus Eaters
In Greek mythology, the lotus-eaters (Greek: λωτοφάγοι, transit. lōtophágoi) were a race of people living on an island dominated by the lotus tree, a plant whose botanical identity is uncertain. The lotus fruits and flowers were the primary food of the island and were a narcotic, causing the inhabitants to sleep in peaceful apathy. After they ate the lotus, they would forget their home and loved ones, and only long to stay with their fellow lotus-eaters. Those who ate the plant never cared to report, nor return.
Figuratively, 'lotus-eater' denotes "a person who spends their time indulging in pleasure and luxury rather than dealing with practical concerns"

The Canadian interviewee did not mention anything about why the fine was reduced by 18,000 Baht. Perhaps it was the immigration officer's discretion as "Theeranan Jitmanee" said. But then that begs the question, why would the Thai court reduce it?

Something similar happened to me in China. I was on a yearly work visa and I had put in the form for my visa to be extended like I did every year. Normally I was on time, but a holiday was coming up and I didn't know that government departments and even certain police departments closed down for a two week holiday. This made my visa late for the processing, so my visa ended by the time they returned from their holiday. I wasn't asked to pay anything. I had to sit in the back room office of my local police station everyday from 9 to 5 while my visa was being processed. I wasn't in a cell, I had to sit in their office next to a desk while they worked. They were very friendly and made me cups of tea, some even tried to chat with me a little. I was allowed to go out for lunch to a restaurant from 12 to 1pm. It was interesting watching them work. Apparently they had some new software on their computers and none of them could figure out how to use it, it was funny. I was allowed to go home after 5pm and come back the next day at 9am. They told me that someone from the British embassy would come to see me. For the first few days I was expecting them to arrive but they never came. One of the officers told me a little later that the person from the British embassy was now not coming. I couldn't understand why not, so they never came and I was just left there. I had the feeling that they couldn't be bothered and felt quite upset with them. Although I had no money to pay, I still lost two weeks money by not working. Like I said, they were very friendly to me and I felt quite at home in their office watching them work..

In the 60s I was involved with the Thai military for extended periods and got to know the Thai people very well.

But I believe I learned more from them than they learned from me.
Thru association, they taught me so much, they taught without saying a single word, they taught by example.
I made real life friendships with these amazing people.
These Thai Air Force and other military special forces looked forward to going to the Buddhist Temple for a period of weeks.
I think it may have been similar to Eric's 3 weeks in jail.
They would live at the Temple completely isolated from the society and learn to live on only the essentials with the Monks.

After 60 days you must leave the country, so he was in the country illegally and the overstay fine is 500 per day up to a maximum fine of 20,000 baht, which means he had overstayed by at least 40 days.

Well, the Canadian gentleman didn't seem to want to explain things clearly in the video. It looks like the immigration officer gave him a fine of 20,000 baht, before exiting, which sounds legitimate, for $600 for not checking in, and his incarceration was a result of the refusal to pay the fine.
But, I was hoping for something in writing about the rules for the visa and if they spell out penalties. I'm just a normal shmuck, but if he is a business owner, he should be more used to these sorts of formalities.

  • @Dan-xx5jq
    @Dan-xx5jq 2 роки тому +2

In the US, they just give you a court date and let you go on with your vacation until that day. They do not hold you in a cell. And if you decide to leave the country right before your court date, they are all too pleased and your case is closed.
They are currently millions of 'overstay' visas in the US. I believe I read that over one million overstays from India itself. They came over with student visas and never returned back to India. In fact, parents in India take out a loan to send their kids to the US so that they stay there and get US citizenship.
In the US, it is estimated that there are over 20 million undocumented people, the last time i read. It would be impossible to hold them all in a detention center.
However, a large majority of countries are very strict and operate just like Thailand.
I was even shocked to read that India arrested Ukrainians for overstaying their visas in India while the war is going on now.
So, be very careful, when you go to another country. Do not assume they operate like the US or your country.

@@VagabondAwake You are right I had it wrong, I just didn't think the number was that high. I got this off a quick Google search, which mentions two sources.
"The Pew Research Center, which tracks this data, reports that there were 5,00,000 unauthorised immigrants from India living in the US in 2014, up from 3,50,000 in 2009 - a 43% increase. However, the Migration Policy Institute, a NGO based in Washington DC, estimates that the number of undocumented Indians in the US might be much lower, at around 2,67,000."..
Nobody seems to know what the right number is??
I believe immigration is a good thing. Unfortunately the system is broken.
And so i was pointing out that, under the current system, people who don't play by the rules, get rewarded, which is very, very, unfair. And a talented person living in a poor under developed country who plays by the rules will not get it. I would like to believe that we are about fairness in this country....

I do have an idea. I’ve read some books of westerners who spent time in Thai prisons in the 80’s and 90’s now that was true hell. I’m sure they’ve gotten better since then.

@@mikedezo424can I ask you why you think they would improve conditions? Just because prisons in western countries are holiday camps doesn't mean everywhere is like that.

How could any country deport a Canadian? That would be like deporting Mother Theresa; “We fear the future because we are wasting the today,” quote by Mother Theresa.

Great interview, l think there is a business opportunity there, 'Thai Prison Tours' 21 days away at HKP (His Majesty's Prison) to find the true meaning of life........🙂 I'll be honest with you, i 'm not sure i believe his story, i was in Thailand around that time early 2016 and the reporting time was 90 days. l suspect he was a long time overstayer but didn't like to say.

My pals have been in the IDC. The Iranian lads in there who run the jail are sound as long you play by the rules and pay your way. Like anything lifes easy if you dont take the piss. I suppose if your not used to incarceration its a shock. If you have done plenty of bird its just another nick. Albeit a shit one.
