By far your best video. Concise, clear, useful. I also use secret pockets in all my pants, even gym shorts. I also have a secret pocket in my back pack, hidden with a velcro seal. I hide cash in toiletry product , leave it on display in your room. My throw away wallet has a bunch of cards in it, all useless, gift cards. I have $200usd cash in the wallet, if its stolen, or I am robbed they get something, and stop looking... Also useful for an immediate bribe as a last resort. Do not dress like a bum, or flashy.. something boring is fine. Be polite. I have never had a serious issue in 35 years of travelling. Be safe. Listen to Dans tips, they are excellent!!
Never thought about a throw away wallet..good idea. Wish I'd had one in my pockets the night I was robbed in Colombia..they emptied out my pockets..but happily they missed the cash I had in my secret money belt ..I might carry your idea one step further and carry an old broken cell phone!

I have 2 phones with identical info installed. 2 bank accounts at home, opened a bank account in Thailand and Hong Kong, 3 credit cards (2 visas and a mastercard) finally I western union or moneygram to myself if all hell break loose and then clear the browser and delete them if using public internet cafe.

Xiaomi chinese phone for $300-500 because its unlock phone the backup phone I use the cheaper phone when im in the philippines where there is a safety issue, while in rest of asia i use my iphone. In Canada you can pay $10-$15 to keep your old phone or sim card monthly to maintain it. But I dont do it. Yes I buy sim locally wherver I land.
Good information. I lost my only debit card two times while travelling abroad. I was lucky and had made friends that could withdraw for me while I reimbursed them online, but that was just lucky. Also, getting a new card can be a big hassle.
All great advice. For decoy wallets...i always keep about $20...if the thief happens to check...i feel like they won’t be disappointed as if nothing was inside.

Definitely always have a back up...I too have traveled the globe with my wife of 20yrs....and we stopped counting at 65 but surely more...and ur words are correct and also current with respect to banking and cards....I have had my Identity stolen a few times over the years but in every case I was ready and never was impacted...slightly inconvenienced waiting as some monies are returned by the bank protection but nothing major...be sure to have credit cards that you’re not responsible for charges....not all cards make it easy to escape fraudulent charges...
Excellent tips. I've traveled to almost 80 countries in 30+ years, but I still learned a couple things. Like using Google Voice for 2FA. And I've never bothered to set up Google Pay because the anti-fraud elements had never occurred to me. I've had a card cloned while abroad, so I will definitely set that up for my next trip. You mention having a decoy wallet, which is smart, but not sure I'd leave it empty since potential thieves may give you a little more unwanted attention if they bother to check it before leaving. I fill one with expired credit cards and a little cash. Usually a $10-20 bill in front and back, with a dozen $1 bills in between. Only used it once, but it worked. Kind of. Was robbed in Mexico by the police four or five years ago (Cd. Juarez, if that matters). They stopped me on the street and made me empty my pockets, supposedly checking for drugs. One "interviewed" me and made me turn my back on the other one while he "checked" my belongings for drugs. While "checking" my belongings, he grabbed maybe half the bills, all but one of which were $1s. They left me the rest of the cash along with the credit cards, thinking maybe I wouldn't notice that my "wallet" was significantly lighter?!?!

I have a great deal of travel experience. I lived in Asia for about 4 years and also traveled through Europe and South America. When I lived in Asia I taught ESL and Math. The schools I worked for helped me setup a bank account. So I would have a local bank for my local earnings. I also setup a separate bank account in the US ( my home country) specifically for travel funds. In terms of going out and about, I've done what Dan described - only taking cash out - and leaving your cards at your residence. Despite that, I did get pick-pocketed once but just had beer money stolen. This was in Thailand near Kho San Road during a holiday when many people were out. I think it would also be a good idea to have an old phone instead of your latest and greatest Iphone! Also, I have copies of my passport page and leave my passport in my residence at all times. I like the 'empty wallet decoy' !!

Great Vid! THANKS!! I am in Quarantine outside the USA. Bad Timing, but my phone battery went out!. Mystery charges did appear on my statement. Just verifying my Identity to remove the charges was a challenge without good phone backup. Fortunately, my back up cards and cash kept me from desperate return to my home country!! Excellent advice for handling one’s money overseas. I have used Remitly and have heard great things about transferwise also. A money belt that is nylon with a plastic buckle (sold on Amazon) works well too. Your videos are educational, interesting and entertaining!
I travelled extensively 30 years ago and what where I kept most of my valuables was in a money belt (not a bum bag). the money belt was kept next to my skin under my shorts and I never had a problem. Fidelity checking is a good backup. They also have international ATM fees reimbursed, and it's actually quicker than Schwab from what I've read (within a day or two vs monthly for Schwab).
@@ytviewer172 Fidelity would be good especially if you have investments. You can just sell shares and then have access to the funds right away. I guess it's the same deal with Schwab, except I usually just transfer money from my main bank to Schwab.

Great info. Money matters like this are near and dear to my heart. Was recently in Argentina and was made aware of how much foreigners get ripped off by ATM fees and gov'ts that limit the maximum amount of cash that can be taken out of ATMs, as well as the rip off exchange rates. Gained an extra 30% over the standard government exchange rate by having my home bank in Canada send an on line money transfer to Western Union. Yes, WU takes their 3% cut but was much better than using a rip off ATM. Gotta wonder how many foreign tourists go to Argentina and simply use the ATM like one would in most other countries without knowing how much they are getting ripped off. Have never seen this anywhere else but Argentina.
Also in Argentina, gotta watch for counterfeit bills when you get cash off the streets from black market guys saying "cambio!" (They're better than the ATMs, believe it or not.) Sometimes they pull a fast one and slip in a fake bill.

Excellent advice as usual amigo, note google voice works with voip only (voice over internet protocol), not with a foreign phone #, and i always carried one set of credit/atm cards w me and left one in the room...
Agree with u on most points however I do like to use the CC cause of the rewards points I earn. I do find that visa is much accepted than Amex in SE Asia. In regards to the phone I agree google voice works but what about just keeping a mobile us plan like T-Mobile that has free international roaming data and keep that one safe and as a backup for all banking and sensitive stuff then just get another phone with a local sim for everyday use.
That may turn out to be the best idea if banks keep tightening 2 factor authentication rules like they have been over the last 5 years. But my USA cell account with TMobile was like $60 month. Now my total bill is usually less than $20 month.
Some US expats might consider services like Global Mail which digitizes your mail and will forward items like credit cards to your current location. All managed online at a reasonable price. Haven’t used it myself yet.
Sometimes it is the strip on the card. I saw a store add a clear plastic on the card and then swiped and it worked. I no longer use credit cards But I do have Google pay, cash app card and I use PayPal. I use these for businesses I am not sure of
For Americans, a good ideas to pay the extra 30 bucks I think it is to get the little passport card. That card is official US government ID and will be accepted by any US consulate as proof of US citizenship. If you keep that separate from your traditional book style passport, if you lose one you always have the other.

Subscribed and Liked. Requested the e-book and am reading it now. Will share with my spouse. We are a USA couple. I'm 71. We have a paid for house in the Azores. Flights to get there are occasionally a bit pricy and vehicle repair can be a bit trying, but I enjoy the people we have met and the house we own. $100 / month expenses while we are there or not. Very economical. Our next 3 week trip to the Azores is this coming February 2024. :) I look forward to being able to stay longer than the 90 day passport limitation we have been cautioned about. Thanks Dan for a great video. I am still learning about things that you covered in the video. I have now moved to the Philippines with my wife to our house here in Cebu City. I did get two American bank accounts, I have 3 sets of Debit-credit cards and I did not tell any of my banks or Stock trading accounts that I have moved internationally. One of my brokerage firms told me if I use an international address they would cancel my account. Before I left the USA, which I heard many wonderful things about MagicJack, I set it up(reg phone and App on my smart phone) there in the USA and now use it here in the Philippines and it works really good. However, I just found out that Wells Fargo will not except VOIPs to send text messages to. I can't use Zell for people to send me money in the States or have text sent to my magicjack phone number. I still have to figure this one out. I have a travel card called Venture Card through Capital one that works so well even though it cost me $95 a year to use. I got it for 1 year free and 50000 points. You get 2 points per dollar charged and 5 points for certain travel charges. There isn't any international transaction fees. Here in the Philippines, when I use it, I get almost an exact exchange rate for the charge. Say 47.7 through Wells Fargo express send but 48.30 the currant rate of the Peso using my Travel Card. I have 3 family members signed up on my card which runs up a huge number of points per month. We make sure to pay off the balance each month also. The card also gives other great benefits. Again, great video------lots to learn from it.

I'd like to be able to travel around like Dan so I will not have a permanent fixed international address, and I don't have a permanent reliable US address either.
I think only restaurants or shops om US take your credit card to their cashier. I remember all the countries we traveled, the servers bring the machine to our table.

I have a Schwab checking account that waives overseas fees. There is an investment account associated with it but you don't have to fund that. Keep in mind, if you are making reservations while still in the US before traveling, use your Schwab checking account to avoid international fees. You see, if reservations are made for foreign entities like hotels or rental cars while you are still in the US planning your vacation, foreign fees will occur unless you have a checking account like Schwab that doesn't charge international fees. I learned that the hard way by paying for my hotel in Manila with my non-Schwab Visa debit card while I was still in the US.

Good info thanks! I already followed most of your tips but got a couple new ideas from you. One tip for you..most banks I know only will give you ONE debit card, period. But at Ally online bank you can easily and for free open several accounts and they send you an ATM debit card for each account. Good way to have several cards for one bank :-)

How about some real information. Ie. How much is the cost of useing the Atms in Mexico. Every atm in Mexico has a fee too use there Atms some are lower than outhers. Which atm in Mexico has the lowest fee? In the Philippines only one bank had no fee Atms that was HSBC. All the rest it was 250 pesos per use.
Not sure it matters if you follow Dans advice and use a bank like Schwab or Navy Federal Cedit Union or USAA and many others, they reimburse all ATM fees world wide so maybe Dan doesn't keep track for that reason. Imho.
If you use a fee rebate bank it doesn't matter what the ATM fees are. You get reimbursed. It is credited back to your account. Just Google the words "What bank in 'countryname' rebates (reimburses, refunds) ATM fees.
Great tips, as always! Look for ATM machine at big banks to get your $$, instead of random ATM on the street. You don't have to worry about the exchange rate. For cash, bring $100 bills that are in good shape and no markings. You get better a better exchange rate with big bills.
Dan I'm wondering what amex card you are using? As far as I can tell the only ones they offer with no foreign transaction fees have a yearly fee. I'm using Wells Fargo autograph visa and capital one savor one MasterCard they have no yearly fee and 3% back on most categories.

Just a little follow up about my phone and banking problems. After using WU for 13 years sending myself or wife money while on vacation in the Philippines, WU flagged my account this week because they saw I was using a different ISP from a different country that didn't match with my country's banking account location.(I'm now retired in the Philippines) I can get text on my magicjack from private people like family but my banks and other financial institutions won't except VOIP service=won't send you text over the internet. I was thinking of using a VPN service but somehow, I figure the banks/cash transfer services will find out where you are and not where you say you are at. I tried to download banking apps and WU apps on my smart phone but would not except the Philippine sim-card=rejected. Maybe a VPN could solve that issue too. Just watch out when using ISPs in other countries because they can freeze your accounts at banks, WU, or any other types of financial institutions when they find out that you are out of your home country. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have traveled the world for since 2007 and my bank has known where I was going the whole time, 13 years. I don't keep it a secret from my bank what I am doing. Many people travel and need money when they are outside their home country. Good question! Better not talk about that here. :-) But Google "How to hide money when traveling and read 5 or 10 articles and you'll be an expert. Always split it in two. In case one is found. On your body is best during the day, but never in a wallet.
I am a bit confused. I use Google Hangouts insted of Google Voice. Uncertain why, but I cannot get Voice (I'm in Tokyo). Did a quick search, and read that Hangouts has been discontinued. Strange since I literally used Hangouts just yesterday. I had to set up Hangouts while in the States (suspect I could have used a VPN while here, but I did not). It is unclear to me the differences between Voice and Hangouts. I know with Hangouts I have a phone number in Arizona, and with this number people call it, and it forwards automatically to here, Tokyo. On a side note, I also use an app called TextMe. It is a free app, and also allows for US phone numbers, no cost. Personally I use the TextMe app more than Hangouts, just because I like the interface more. However, I have found both really good. I used to use Skype for a phone number. Recall it was like $10 or $20 a year. It was fine, but how many US numbers do you really need. I need to get that Schwab card. It has been on my to-do list for over a decade now.

In regards to Google Voice - say that I port my home country mobile number to this, and I am overseas in Thailand, the bank from my home country sends me a text code to verify the transaction....will I be able to do it with the Google voice ??? This is probably my main concern. I dont want to have to take a my mobile number with me abroad because of horrendous roaming rates. Any help or advice is very much appreciated!!

And I've never bothered to set up Google Pay because the anti-fraud elements had never occurred to me. I've had a card cloned while abroad, so I will definitely set that up for my next trip.
You mention having a decoy wallet, which is smart, but not sure I'd leave it empty since potential thieves may give you a little more unwanted attention if they bother to check it before leaving. I fill one with expired credit cards and a little cash. Usually a $10-20 bill in front and back, with a dozen $1 bills in between. Only used it once, but it worked. Kind of. Was robbed in Mexico by the police four or five years ago (Cd. Juarez, if that matters). They stopped me on the street and made me empty my pockets, supposedly checking for drugs. One "interviewed" me and made me turn my back on the other one while he "checked" my belongings for drugs. While "checking" my belongings, he grabbed maybe half the bills, all but one of which were $1s. They left me the rest of the cash along with the credit cards, thinking maybe I wouldn't notice that my "wallet" was significantly lighter?!?!

I have a great deal of travel experience. I lived in Asia for about 4 years and also traveled through Europe and South America.
When I lived in Asia I taught ESL and Math. The schools I worked for helped me setup a bank account. So I would have a local bank for my local earnings. I also setup a separate bank account in the US ( my home country) specifically for travel funds.
In terms of going out and about, I've done what Dan described - only taking cash out - and leaving your cards at your residence.
Despite that, I did get pick-pocketed once but just had beer money stolen. This was in Thailand near Kho San Road during a holiday when many people were out. I think it would also be a good idea to have an old phone instead of your latest and greatest Iphone! Also, I have copies of my passport page and leave my passport in my residence at all times. I like the 'empty wallet decoy' !!

Just verifying my Identity to remove the charges was a challenge without good phone backup. Fortunately, my back up cards and cash kept me from desperate return to my home country!! Excellent advice for handling one’s money overseas. I have used Remitly and have heard great things about transferwise also. A money belt that is nylon with a plastic buckle (sold on Amazon) works well too. Your videos are educational, interesting and entertaining!

I travelled extensively 30 years ago and what where I kept most of my valuables was in a money belt (not a bum bag). the money belt was kept next to my skin under my shorts and I never had a problem. Fidelity checking is a good backup. They also have international ATM fees reimbursed, and it's actually quicker than Schwab from what I've read (within a day or two vs monthly for Schwab).

Great info. Money matters like this are near and dear to my heart. Was recently in Argentina and was made aware of how much foreigners get ripped off by ATM fees and gov'ts that limit the maximum amount of cash that can be taken out of ATMs, as well as the rip off exchange rates. Gained an extra 30% over the standard government exchange rate by having my home bank in Canada send an on line money transfer to Western Union. Yes, WU takes their 3% cut but was much better than using a rip off ATM. Gotta wonder how many foreign tourists go to Argentina and simply use the ATM like one would in most other countries without knowing how much they are getting ripped off. Have never seen this anywhere else but Argentina.

Also in Argentina, gotta watch for counterfeit bills when you get cash off the streets from black market guys saying "cambio!" (They're better than the ATMs, believe it or not.) Sometimes they pull a fast one and slip in a fake bill.

Agree with u on most points however I do like to use the CC cause of the rewards points I earn. I do find that visa is much accepted than Amex in SE Asia. In regards to the phone I agree google voice works but what about just keeping a mobile us plan like T-Mobile that has free international roaming data and keep that one safe and as a backup for all banking and sensitive stuff then just get another phone with a local sim for everyday use.
That may turn out to be the best idea if banks keep tightening 2 factor authentication rules like they have been over the last 5 years. But my USA cell account with TMobile was like $60 month. Now my total bill is usually less than $20 month.
Some US expats might consider services like Global Mail which digitizes your mail and will forward items like credit cards to your current location. All managed online at a reasonable price. Haven’t used it myself yet.

Sometimes it is the strip on the card. I saw a store add a clear plastic on the card and then swiped and it worked.
I no longer use credit cards But I do have Google pay, cash app card and I use PayPal. I use these for businesses I am not sure of

For Americans, a good ideas to pay the extra 30 bucks I think it is to get the little passport card. That card is official US government ID and will be accepted by any US consulate as proof of US citizenship. If you keep that separate from your traditional book style passport, if you lose one you always have the other.

Subscribed and Liked. Requested the e-book and am reading it now. Will share with my spouse. We are a USA couple. I'm 71. We have a paid for house in the Azores. Flights to get there are occasionally a bit pricy and vehicle repair can be a bit trying, but I enjoy the people we have met and the house we own. $100 / month expenses while we are there or not. Very economical. Our next 3 week trip to the Azores is this coming February 2024. :) I look forward to being able to stay longer than the 90 day passport limitation we have been cautioned about. Thanks Dan for a great video. I am still learning about things that you covered in the video. I have now moved to the Philippines with my wife to our house here in Cebu City. I did get two American bank accounts, I have 3 sets of Debit-credit cards and I did not tell any of my banks or Stock trading accounts that I have moved internationally. One of my brokerage firms told me if I use an international address they would cancel my account.
Before I left the USA, which I heard many wonderful things about MagicJack, I set it up(reg phone and App on my smart phone) there in the USA and now use it here in the Philippines and it works really good. However, I just found out that Wells Fargo will not except VOIPs to send text messages to. I can't use Zell for people to send me money in the States or have text sent to my magicjack phone number. I still have to figure this one out.
I have a travel card called Venture Card through Capital one that works so well even though it cost me $95 a year to use. I got it for 1 year free and 50000 points. You get 2 points per dollar charged and 5 points for certain travel charges. There isn't any international transaction fees. Here in the Philippines, when I use it, I get almost an exact exchange rate for the charge. Say 47.7 through Wells Fargo express send but 48.30 the currant rate of the Peso using my Travel Card. I have 3 family members signed up on my card which runs up a huge number of points per month. We make sure to pay off the balance each month also. The card also gives other great benefits. Again, great video------lots to learn from it.

I have a Schwab checking account that waives overseas fees. There is an investment account associated with it but you don't have to fund that.
Keep in mind, if you are making reservations while still in the US before traveling, use your Schwab checking account to avoid international fees. You see, if reservations are made for foreign entities like hotels or rental cars while you are still in the US planning your vacation, foreign fees will occur unless you have a checking account like Schwab that doesn't charge international fees. I learned that the hard way by paying for my hotel in Manila with my non-Schwab Visa debit card while I was still in the US.

Good info thanks! I already followed most of your tips but got a couple new ideas from you. One tip for you..most banks I know only will give you ONE debit card, period. But at Ally online bank you can easily and for free open several accounts and they send you an ATM debit card for each account. Good way to have several cards for one bank :-)

How about some real information. Ie. How much is the cost of useing the Atms in Mexico. Every atm in Mexico has a fee too use there Atms some are lower than outhers. Which atm in Mexico has the lowest fee? In the Philippines only one bank had no fee Atms that was HSBC. All the rest it was 250 pesos per use.
Not sure it matters if you follow Dans advice and use a bank like Schwab or Navy Federal Cedit Union or USAA and many others, they reimburse all ATM fees world wide so maybe Dan doesn't keep track for that reason. Imho.

If you use a fee rebate bank it doesn't matter what the ATM fees are. You get reimbursed. It is credited back to your account. Just Google the words "What bank in 'countryname' rebates (reimburses, refunds) ATM fees.

Look for ATM machine at big banks to get your $$, instead of random ATM on the street. You don't have to worry about the exchange rate.
For cash, bring $100 bills that are in good shape and no markings. You get better a better exchange rate with big bills.

Dan I'm wondering what amex card you are using? As far as I can tell the only ones they offer with no foreign transaction fees have a yearly fee. I'm using Wells Fargo autograph visa and capital one savor one MasterCard they have no yearly fee and 3% back on most categories.

Just a little follow up about my phone and banking problems. After using WU for 13 years sending myself or wife money while on vacation in the Philippines, WU flagged my account this week because they saw I was using a different ISP from a different country that didn't match with my country's banking account location.(I'm now retired in the Philippines)
I can get text on my magicjack from private people like family but my banks and other financial institutions won't except VOIP service=won't send you text over the internet.
I was thinking of using a VPN service but somehow, I figure the banks/cash transfer services will find out where you are and not where you say you are at.
I tried to download banking apps and WU apps on my smart phone but would not except the Philippine sim-card=rejected. Maybe a VPN could solve that issue too. Just watch out when using ISPs in other countries because they can freeze your accounts at banks, WU, or any other types of financial institutions when they find out that you are out of your home country. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have traveled the world for since 2007 and my bank has known where I was going the whole time, 13 years. I don't keep it a secret from my bank what I am doing. Many people travel and need money when they are outside their home country. In fact, my bank has a portal that allows me to log in and tell them where I am travling to over the next 6 months so they are not surprised when I use my credit cards or ATM cards, You need to call your bank and have a heart to heart. hear are my thoughts on international banking:

I use a VPN when I do international banking. Mostly because the signal is scrambled if someone tries to snoop my password.
If you are a veteran get a navy federal account. They have branches all over the world Incase you need a card replaced.

Good question! Better not talk about that here. :-) But Google "How to hide money when traveling and read 5 or 10 articles and you'll be an expert. Always split it in two. In case one is found. On your body is best during the day, but never in a wallet.

I am a bit confused. I use Google Hangouts insted of Google Voice. Uncertain why, but I cannot get Voice (I'm in Tokyo). Did a quick search, and read that Hangouts has been discontinued. Strange since I literally used Hangouts just yesterday. I had to set up Hangouts while in the States (suspect I could have used a VPN while here, but I did not). It is unclear to me the differences between Voice and Hangouts. I know with Hangouts I have a phone number in Arizona, and with this number people call it, and it forwards automatically to here, Tokyo. On a side note, I also use an app called TextMe. It is a free app, and also allows for US phone numbers, no cost. Personally I use the TextMe app more than Hangouts, just because I like the interface more. However, I have found both really good. I used to use Skype for a phone number. Recall it was like $10 or $20 a year. It was fine, but how many US numbers do you really need. I need to get that Schwab card. It has been on my to-do list for over a decade now.
I had heard that Hangouts would be automatically turned into Google Voice numbers.

If you are retired in pilipine never wanting to return home to Canada how do you get replacement of you debit card? It has expire date on it.
I lost an ATM card once and had my bank overnight the replacement to where I was. It came with a new much later expiration date.
In regards to Google Voice - say that I port my home country mobile number to this, and I am overseas in Thailand, the bank from my home country sends me a text code to verify the transaction....will I be able to do it with the Google voice ??? This is probably my main concern. I dont want to have to take a my mobile number with me abroad because of horrendous roaming rates. Any help or advice is very much appreciated!!
