Brilliant shocking drama. The most scary thing is how long before the horrors in this film become REALITY! I feel sure there is much worse than COVID sitting in a sealed test-tube somewhere just waiting for some careless accident. A good sequel to this film would be ON THE BEACH, 2000, if you can find it anywhere.
The next plandemic , like the first four years ago , was no accident . That was a test run , to see how many would fall for the fear mongering and comply with the stupid rules . 😮 We are living in a world ruled by psychotic megalomaniacs , who care nothing for those they are wanting to control 😡. ✝️🆓🇬🇧
Covid was just a PsyOp. A glorified case of the sniffles. Something like this would be truly apocalyptic, a zoonotic virus that effects all vertebrate life, thats promethean in its transfer ability, going from airborne to bloodborne to water born etc however suits its environment best, it would be truly apocalyptic and at worse case could set life on Earth back to the Permian leaving only Arthropods alive.
Ironically I was in Tokyo in October 2019 and my friend took me to a local screening of this with the cinematographer present. I really liked it and recognized it for what it was at the time but I definitely thought it was a little dated and then ironically the pandemic starts a few months later and all of a sudden this film feels a lot more relatable.
@@WeissVogel It differ in many ways. MM88 is no longer from space (hence they never call it Martian Murderer), the Soviet submarine is only infected in the film, but helps the Palmer station in the novel. And of course, the Neutron bombs replaced by Hydrogen bombs to create a more destructive motion picture style ending. Many differences including those I hadn't listed. But still faithful enough.

This movie was directed by a Japanese master who shot an innovative yakuza movie called [Jingi Naki Tatakai: (Battle Without Honor&Justice)]. Before shooting this movie, and in his later years, he also shot a revolutionary movie called [Battle Royale]. Personally, I like it better than Akira Kurosawa.

Thank you so much for uploading this. I had been waiting to watch it for about 40 years. When I was very young, I saw this movie at a video rental store. It was the edition with the rotting corpse (seen at 2:08:43) on the cover, and it scared me. I didn't remember the name of the film, but I did remember the tag line "863 people were not so lucky - they survived" (well, I didn't remember that it was 863 people, but I remember the rest of it). Using my memory of the tag line, I was able to identify the film, a few years ago, but I couldn't find a copy of it anywhere. I did eventually manage to find it online, but the quality was quite poor, and before I got around to watching it, COVID hit, and, well, I wasn't in the mood to watch a film about a viral pandemic lol. Anyway, I finally watched it all these years later, and I have to say it was worth the wait. It's a really good film, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Today it is my first time to watch this movie, although it was made over 40 years ago, yet it is still impressive. Strangely, I never heard of this movie before, this movie is definitely very underrated.
I agree. This movie was edited and released in the US under the title "Virus" and I didn't like the US version. I'm so happy this one, the original, is here! I'm part Japanese, and there's something so perfect about this version, something that the US version lacks. Even the main actors have their credits in Japanese or English depending on whether they are Japanese or English.
@@chunxxxxter It's not a spoiler!? It's a joke more aimed at fans of the film The Thing (21 liked it so far). Basically that the characters from 'Virus' survive and escape their [films] troubles and run in to a worse situation; encountering the Thing from The Thing film. As I said, both films are set in 1982 and their locations cross over. I've given nothing away, you're free to watch both unspoiled. Virus is worth a watch, if you've not. But The Thing (82) is an absolute must see classic!! :D
Thank you for uploading the full original move with subtitles. I actually saw it in France when it came out in 1979. It never went on general release in the U.K. The American edit was awful and there was some bad casting. Chuck Connors was not a good choice to play a British sub commander and Henry Silva was miscast playing the American general. Some of the script was stilted, possibly due to poor translation from the original screenwriting from Japanese to English. Robert Vaughan was excellent. However, that aside, the premise was good and was one of the first films to take a serious look at the consequences of developing biological weapons. With the idea that Covid might have ‘escaped’ from a lab, this movie was not so far off the mark.
It's unfortunate that every film made in England had to have its token American actor if it was to be sold in that country. One needs to ignore this weakness in watching this film, a well considered plot.
The only reason i discovered this movie was the theme song... Ever since that one night it played on late night TV, it haunts me. This movie, this theme song by Janis Ian... It hurts, but it's beautiful. "But don't forget the flame was mine, in another place... in another time... Toujours Gai Mon Cher."
Once in a while as you search through movie titles here, you come across a gem. This is one of them. It is surprising I never heard of it as a theatrical or broadcast release, but I can understand why. The theme is too close to reality, disturbing even, for some. Considering the state of the world the last couple of years, this tale, God forbid, could become a reality. It has an of international cast, with solid acting performances and a fluid story. This movie can easily join the likes of The Stand, On The Beach, and The Day After as thought provoking end of the world scenarios.
With what has happened in these last years. This movie was a glimpse of a possible future. Though looking at it now, with the lens of COVID makes it all the more chilling.
Goes to show that stupid covid was nothing of a pandemic with its super low mortality rate. AND if there was a serious virus pandemic, the mandates wouldn't have done any good anyway. Just let nature run its course.

Finely made, quite thorough even.. they tackled the fact that majority were men in a situation where reproduction is crucial to survival.. still stands up to this day in my opinion..
This film completely passed me by, I'd never heard of it before. In fact, going by the thumbnail and the name of the film, I was expecting a cruddy zombie movie. I have been pleasantly surprised. When I say pleasantly I mean bone crushingly depressed. Not the most cheerful film I've ever seen. At the end Yoshizumi looked like the cast away but at the beginning of Monty Python.
The novel written in 1964 from which the film was made is quite an interesting read. In the original story "Virus" the pandemic occurs in the Spring and Summer of 1970 called the Year of Calamity. The virus is actually a space-born germ (collected by a US military scooper satellite to research space germs) that is made even more virulent by the British(who steal the germ from Ft. Detrick where it's taken to the UK) at the bio-warfare lab at Porton Down. A lab researcher steals it from Porton Down in the hopes of handing it to two free-lance smugglers to give to a specialist in microbiology to study the new monster virus. However, the smugglers are actually working for the CIA who wish to steal it back to the US. They take the virus hidden in a thermos and fly from England to Turkey to make the handover to US agents but the plane is caught in a storm and crashes in the Italian Alps causing the thermos to be destroyed and the virus escapes.

Sheesh... so the agenda in the 80's, through the 90's and into present day has worked quite well... I think that people want reality to mirror movies and other programming... and that's why it has become so easy for the engineers to engineer reality... mirror world...
How poignant this story for Covid19.. who knew? 40 years ago they made this movie? From Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, UK, Japan, US? How freakish is that in 2020? Glenn Ford was still alive, Henry Silva the usual villain... Bo Svenson, Edward Olmos sooo young.

This one is far worse then the Stand... not only does this one kill all humans except in Antarctica, it also kills all animal life too. Only plants and maybe insects are spared. The only silver lining is that since all the nukes go off its likely that the virus was destroyed so there is a slight chance humanity could eventually start over. This would be only the barest chance however... more likely we would go extinct eventually.

Idk how ive never heard of this but its a solid film actually id be as bold to say its excellent.
😢😢😢😢
The next plandemic , like the first four years ago , was no accident .
That was a test run , to see how many would fall for the fear mongering and comply with the stupid rules . 😮
We are living in a world ruled by psychotic megalomaniacs , who care nothing for those they are wanting to control 😡.

Only six minutes in and i can tell this movie is a goldmine.
For those with the eyes to see.
Even the English speaking parts I still read it.

The writer of this script thought of everything that could go wrong and mixed it up all together. Maybe that's why this movie is so good. 👍👍
Script was more or less faithful to the original book from 1964.
The book was very good I feel and the movie did a good job adapting it.
@@WeissVogel It differ in many ways. MM88 is no longer from space (hence they never call it Martian Murderer), the Soviet submarine is only infected in the film, but helps the Palmer station in the novel. Carter finds his family dead in the streets and loses courage in the novel, the Wa3P is nowhere to be seen in the movie. And of course, the Neutron bombs replaced by Hydrogen bombs to create a more destructive motion picture style ending. Many differences including those I hadn't listed. But still faithful enough.
Good ? oh right sure crazy General laughing like a 1980s evil villain XD sure …. Good
great amazing movie.good old film school. you must watch this movie. keeps you in suspense until the very end. extremely sad and traumatic. shows how fragile life is when everything around you disappears, literally. People's greatest treasure is other people. we are all equal. all beautiful in the image of God. everyone contributes to this vast chain of life. Today, everything that is in this film we already have in reality. We should come to our senses as soon as possible and stop crazy politicians who no longer have the mandate to make decisions for us. our lives are the most precious and everything else has no right to threaten them, including the crazy people in power in the west
Tell that to the Islamists and the CCP and the Globalists etc .
We are as equal in their eyes , as those were in the George Orwell dystopian book '1984' .

I haven't looked in months though.
Accidentally found this movie here on UA-cam at 3.00 am…had me gripped from start to finish 👏👏👏
I saw this a few years ago and it blew me away. I think it's the combination of Japanese storytelling and western. Completely original and haunting.
I definitely think it's the Japanese storytelling that comes through... the foreboding atmosphere of the film is just different...
1:14:00 - After everything that's gone on, they go to the Norwegian Antarctic base, and then get killed by The Thing! (Also happens in '82)
Spoiler alert,,, no point in watching it now thanks
@@chunxxxxter It's not a spoiler!? It's a joke more aimed at fans of the film The Thing (21 liked it so far). Basically that the characters from 'Virus' survive and escape their [films] troubles and run in to a worse situation; encountering the Thing from The Thing film. As I said, both films are set in 1982 and their locations cross over.

COVID barely holds a candle to this. Humanity dead just five-seven months into the outbreak…
Goes to show that stupid covid was nothing of a pandemic with its super low mortality rate. AND if there was a serious virus pandemic, the mandates wouldn't have done any good anyway. Just let nature run its course.
I mean come-on this movie is way ahead, one of the first modern drone concept in movies.
more like a robo vacuum cleaner
Why wouldn't the drone have brought the airborne virus back in the sub?
They existed wether u like it or not back then.

They had years to retrofit it before going to Japan. On the other hand, the number of survivors was below the point where they could repopulate the planet at about 900 survivors. After the end of the movie, even less. For arguments sake, let us say the emerald miningtowns in Australia had listened to the news and went into some preppers bunkers + population in Iceland and Greenland, that survived - humanity could repopulate again.

One of the best movie for me. How sad how people do evil things just for power. The 5 year old kid on the radio using his dads radio said hes all alone and his daddy wont wake up and he is not feeling well he needs his mommy but . Mom is already gone. And he knows how to use a gun. So sad
Kinda odd kid being 5 years old and still know how to off himself with a gun.
1M views? Surprised so much. Am a native Japanese and when I was fourteen years old or some this time. Did not know really well but maybe two of us saw some ads of this movie, and went to a relatively small theatre in my hometown Nagoya with my classmate. Great Film that I remember from when I was a kid !
Saw virus before but not full name fooled me shortly
Benny Hill considered funnier than Monty Python by two TV stations --WOR and WLVI!!
