I mostly had no idea what vaporwave or “a e s t h e t i c” was at the time, so it was striking to see all these different small details (and fondnesses) of my childhood represented together in one place lol. It made a huge impression on me and made me feel a little less weird haha Thanks for doing what you do!
Honestly, I had a mix planned that was gonna intentionally go for that “metanostalgia” vibe, but this one unintentionally got a lot of people in that headspace. I might just do it anyway 😅 old lux, 18 carat affair, etc

Well, most of this kind of music doesn’t really trigger a clear memory for me… but the feeling of being up extra late on the night of a special occasion, tired and worn out while the adults talk and laugh together. Or sitting in the back seat(of our ‘84 Malibu wagon) on a long road trip, almost asleep, music from the radio blending with the sound of the tires and the air over the car. This music can be tremendously comforting and relaxing.

This is out of the blue, but I’m glad I secretly created a Spotify account without my mother knowing when I was nine(i am at the cultured age of 17 now)-I found vaporwave through that (of course that’s all the surface level stuff, ESPRIT and 18 Carat Affair), but it’s oddly comforting to find so many people inside this genre you thought was a secret. Y’all are awesome, we’re all just reliving our memories and making space for new ones. I don’t know any of you, but I know this is one of my favorite internet communities/cultures.

@@bahamut_the_warrior that’s awesome! :D I’m 32 and discovered actual vaporwave kind of late in life (like a little before Covid hit), but I’ve always been into 90s stuff, old TWC, smooth jazz, etc, since I actually lived it back then; I just had no idea that there was this whole musical subgenre associated with all this stuff until like 5 years after its heyday! 😅 it turned out to be a phase I never really got over haha I was born Catholic and am still Catholic today, but I’ve asked a lot of questions and met a lot of interesting people along the way, and being a small part of this community helps me to keep doing so :D I’m not really able to travel frequently so it keeps me in touch with plenty of perspectives outside my own. Lots of people of good will out there! Good luck to you as well, and thanks for stopping in!

I’ve recently tried to get back into my faith by going to youth groups and church more often, and I’m feeling more like a person lol. I had a long period where I denounced everything my parents put upon me and hated religion for a while until I decided to come back and be a “normal” person. Hope to see more mixed from you :)
I was born in 1999, but I love all the old stuff. This music takes me to a time period that I didn't grow up in, but still feel a part of in a mystical sort of way. I can't really describe it, it's just sleeping whimsy for the past I suppose.
Before I hit my teenage years and became a countercultural youth group kid (which comes with nostalgia of its own haha), I remember completely embracing the pop culture and aesthetic around me as a ‘90s kid (born in ‘90). Hot pink, neon, palm trees, alternative music on the Edge, backwards hats, everything. I wanted to be like Mike. I drank the shit out of Surge, and occasionally got a free one courtesy of the “under the cap” games they ran back in the day. I watched the Olympics and Dave Letterman religiously. The whole nine yards, without any trace of self-consciousness. I say all that to say this: I’m not sure how different your and my experiences with this time period actually are. You embrace it for what it is and revel in it, because it completes you in some small way. It all tickles our brains in the same place. You should definitely feel welcome among those who were there :)

I grew up in the 2000's though in my early teens embraced and explored the culture of this time period (and the general 20th century). I like the simplicity of the 80's/90's and the originality it had in terms of ideas, art, history, and culture. I'm sure it was a hell of a time to be alive in back then, and I feel the ideas and influences of the period are still felt in some form today through many people, and will probably outlive most of us. That's the awesome power of the past.

Not nostalgic, but this ever growing feeling that I feel when hearing these. Molina - hey kids (slowed 8d audio) is a good example. It reminds me of a past I never had and a future I’ll never experience. Kind of like walking in a cyberpunk city. It’s very unexplainable. Windows96 hazy trip is another good example. It reminds me of a white factory making paper, and windmills with google translate in the background never to be used. You never know if you’ll leave the place, or if you will stay there forever. I am sure many people experience this with me. It’s odd.

I didn’t know that, that’s awesome! :) I definitely remember my parents renting an N64 from Hastings in ‘97 and getting to play SM64 for the first time as a kid. I couldn’t figure it out, but I came back to it on the Switch last year and 120 starred it 😎

The artists usually sample smooth jazz or other easy-listening genres from the 80’s or 90s :) how I get samples personally is kinda complicated lol, but I’m sure a method is Google-able
Thanks! It works on two levels in a way. Vaporwave is a genre of sampled music that had its heyday about several years ago; it used samples of old 80s-90s funk and smooth jazz (mostly slowing them) to evoke an exaggerated sense of nostalgia and familiarity in generations mostly too young to have remembered the original works. But now, the people who listened to vaporwave when it was most popular now have a sense of real nostalgia for the days when they first listened to vaporwave and reveled in that uncanny false nostalgia
@@nonamelegend_vapor Hmm..I get it. Well I was born in 1991 and I do remember the noise of VHS tapes going WuuEUuueuuuEIIiiiiiiiihhh' or other malfunctioning-noises, so I have experienced that. My parents listened to 80's music a lot too. But the radio wasn't on much (and if it was, it was Classical Music) so I do 'recognise' the old-tape-noise and the humming sounds of old video's but no themes or jazzy 80's music, apart from real popular ones that might've been on the radio in my country at the time.

But the radio wasn't on much (and if it was, it was Classical Music) so I do 'recognise' the old-tape-noise and the humming sounds of old video's but no themes or jazzy 80's music, apart from real popular ones that might've been on the radio in my country at the time.
