- cleaning it out,.servicing the fan motor and placing a new cord on it that can handle the load. The old cord gets hot in places and is unsafe to operate
After the "modern" junk that was actually recalled due to fire risk, I bought a Round Montgomery Ward Heater/Fan from the 50's. It runs PERFECT! And will continue to do so after I'm dead. I own a lot of old stuff because it just doesn't break or has a stupid electronics module buried in it. You learn lessons as you get older. 🙂
My 80 year old grandma still has one of these in her basement shower room. It's identical. So surreal seeing this here.
Washer It's on the left
That’s a good point on crimping vs soldering. Haven’t thought about high current applications.
Hey Bro, I work on gear a lot.....I bought a giant honeywell 3 filter hepa filter at the thrift store for 20.00 and opened it and lysol cleaned they hell out of it and put 3 new filters in it. My shop is 20 x 16 and it keeps the dust down and air fresher and clean. Not a bad idea. Quiet too.
I got a 60s Montgomery Ward, 40s Or cold be 50s GE, and 60s GE that needs the cord replaced. I'm using the Montgomery Ward in my bedroom at the moment until I get the new cord on my GE as the Montgomery Ward rattles pretty badly do to the two bladed fan blad I think.
That motor looks identical to turntable motors of that era.
I was always accused of being "cheap" because I would fix up my old stuff. Well the jokes on them!
Is there any asbestos insulation on the white wires? I'm surprised how quiet that unit is. My wife had a similar unit 30 years ago when we got married. It made a God awful screeching noise until it warmed up. It wasn't the fan I suspected it was the nicrome wire rubbing against the ceramic insulators as the unit warmed up. I never found out. I tossed that unit at the first chance. 😂
I love these old radiant heaters with the ribbon type elements. They give off a nice glow and get nice and hot. The new ones are junk (and dangerous) quite honestly.
@bryan-yg6bvOkay then.
Obviously it’s invented by Alan MacMasters, isn’t it? 😂
Titan Milk house heater mine still works 1970
Text book procedure, great job!
But does it toast good? 😜
Great old heater... You forgot the thrust washer, but it will probably last another 50+ years without it.
Love those heaters but the power company likes them the best!
Nice repair. I am amazed that was originally ungrounded, plenty of scope for an element to fail and contact the chassis. Heaters of that vintage (and even older) in the UK would have required an earth connection.
You didnt see grounded appliances and outlets here until the 1970s. We were not wise on earthed appliances yet. Many of them were built with the electrical isolated from the outer case so that in the event of a failure no harm came to the user, but this was not one of those pieces.
@@JordanPierInteresting - thank you !
Ive always said " if it's metal, it must be earthed"
Those metal touch lamps frighten the crap out of me, no earth :-(
@@zx8401ztv I know what you mean re.touch lamps - and you can "feel" the a.c., as with the leakage on many switched mode power supply outputs. I know the current is tiny and harmless (or should be) but even so!
Sure there is an “earth” connection on touch lamps…your body :o
