The most warm, generous and lovely people anywhere. On a return visit I brought my friends there a Carburetor for their '57 Chevy. She and her Husband cried for days. It was a beautiful thing. Shame they're oppressed.
Absolutely epic how you and your lovely wife absorb the culture and the traditions! Keep them coming. You just inspired me to do this trip with my wife and invite my best friend, also with his wife!
No doubt, the music, the food, the beauty of the landscapes, the old Spanish colonial architecture and most of all, the beauty, passion and warmth of the Cuban people, are great, as you said. I would know. They’re my people. Cuba is my motherland. The dear island where I was born. Cuba...to me, there’s nothing like it. Don’t get me wrong. All the Caribbean islands are beautiful. Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica...all beautiful spots. Warm, friendly, beautiful people. But to me, and of course, as a Cuban I am bias, there’s no place like Cuba. My land Cuba. I’m glad you and your wife were able to experience some of what Cuba has to offer and that you seemed to have a good time. All that being said, I do have to point out that Cuba’s reality is one thing for European and American tourists and another thing all together different for Cuba’s people. There’s no political freedom in Cuba. There’s no freedom of speech. For many years there was no freedom of religion in Cuba although I hear things have gotten a bit better in that respect. There’s only one political party and you better not speak out against it or you will end up in jail. It’s not at all the rosy picture tourists get. You said there’s perfect equality. Well, in Cuba “some people are more equal than others”. If you have some sort of position with the Communist government you are more equal than most. Is it super safe in Cuba? I’m sure the touristy parts of Cuba are very safe compared to other touristy spots elsewhere. That’s how the government wants it because they want the euros, the dollars, the pounds sterling...to keep coming in. A Cuban knows better than to commit any sort of crime targeting tourists because they will be dealt with extremely hard. So maybe there’s no crime in the tourist areas. Not so in the rest of the country. Desperate people in need of the most basic things in life will do desperate things. Things are and have been so bad in Cuba that there are 2 to 3 millions Cubans living outside Cuba. Cuba, a country with a population of 11 or 12 million right now. Sure, many Cubans that left did so seeking economic opportunity. But many of them, like all my family for example, left seeking, political and religious freedom. They left to escape imprisonment or worse from the communist totalitarian government. Things have gotten a bit better in Cuba lately. The totalitarian government of Cuba has loosen the reins a bit. I hope that with the exposure of Cuba to more and more outside eyes, be it tourists as you and your wife or more importantly to outside journalists, that conditions in Cuba, will continue to improve. For the Cuban people benefit, especially and specifically. I am happy that you were able to go to Cuba and have a good time and really enjoyed the country and it’s people. I’m not one of those exile Cubans that wants to keep Cuba isolated and under an embargo forever. But it does pain me that foreigners visiting Cuba are shown a Cuban reality that does not exist in for the Cubans living there. Sorry, I know this is way too long a “rant” but, believe me, I could say so much more about what is wrong and needs to change in Cuba. For the benefit of Cuba’s people. I became a fan of yours during your Formula 1 career and I am a fan still. I love your UA-cam channel. The things you talk about, your knowledge about cars and about racing. I like the guests you bring in. The manner you conduct your self, now and in the past. But...I’m sorry. It needed to be said. Behind Cuba’s facade of beauty and equality, orchestrated by Cuba’s totalitarian government, specifically for the tourists...there’s another Cuba where Cubans are suffering and still denied the most basic human rights. Your fan... 🤔🇨🇺🇺🇸
@Daniel Iglesias: Man, I love your essay. You could not have said it better. I was going to write something similar, and then I read your comments. The first thing that struck me was when Nico said that there is zero criminality and that everyone is equal. But you seem to have covered almost everything. Well done.
