Yep, confirmed, just changed it, didn't touch the battery. Connected the two electrical pieces with the car off though. Turned car back on and everything working fine!
A couple of points, you don't need to disconnect the battery, but if you decide to do so, ALWAYS disconnect the earth first, it removes the risk of shorting your tools between the terminal and any parts of the car.
It can real interesting, real quick if the wrench you’re loosening the non ground terminal with comes into contact with any metal part in the engine compartment with the negative terminal still attached.
This gave me all the information I needed to do the job. Went so fast. Thanks for the reminder to disconnect the battery. I bought an OEM driver side mirror, about $102 out the door. I read the reviews on the Amazon cheapies and didn't get a warm fuzzy feeling (I depend on this mirror to see!), and FCPEuro had OEM but estimated a 9 day delivery, way too long. VW parts was $20 more, but had it to me the next day.
Excellent video, very uplifting and a real money saver! The replacement driver's side mirror glass that I bought for my wife's 2007 Rabbit cost a mere $15, and installation was as simple as depicted in the video with one exeption: My replacement did not include the springy stainless steel thing that has a blob of grease on the end. I was able to remove it from the original mirror by force with a pair of pliers - Thus breaking a little bit of the black plastic. But the stainless part came out undamaged and snapped right into place on the new mirror. After that, everything went smoothly. BTW I didn't bother disconnecting the battery because I figured there was no chance of the mirror de-fogger running without the vehicle's defroster turned on. Thanks very much for this exceptionally helpful video.
I cannot express how thankful I am for this quick to the point and highly helpful video and item link. I almost paid $92.00+ tax for it and instead used the link provided and paid only $40 at Amazon. Much appreciated 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🏻
Watched today changed the mirror on my Gold MK7 2013 in about 4 minutes, I was a little naughty and didn't disconnect the battery but all is working as it should. Many thanks for the vid really appreciated.
Didn't even think about being able to do this myself. Just paid $150+ to replace the mirror. Future reference I will come to UA-cam first. Thank you for providing the world with your knowledge.
finally someone that made a good video thats clear to see and follow (not all the others out there where people can't even hold the camera still). Thank you!
Thank you for the video just fixed my vw golf tsi, I noticed the mirror was wobbly and coming off a bit! Saved me money doing it myself! I found it easier to use pliers to remove the red and blue plugs
I just did this today on my Volkswagen Golf. I was only able to find the new glass at the Volkswagen dealership. It cost a little more than $170. I was going to install it myself, but since the parts department was empty and there were no other customers the parts guy did it for me. It probably took him about 45 seconds. I wish I had known where to look to find the glass for $45. I bowed to your superior intellect. I just did another search and found it for under $30 being sold by Amazon. I don't know why I couldn't find it the first time.
That was a lot easier than I thought! I bought my mirrors from the dealer (2015 VW Golf Sportwagen TDi), and I paid $179 for the passenger's side and $189 for the driver's side.....
@@Simon11354 the cause for buying the mirrors? The passenger's side mirror just started falling off of the backing, I think it delaminated from the really cold weather. I bought both mirrors because I figured if one reached the end of its life cycle, the other one might fail soon too.
I just did mine. I think I took 11 minutes. :) Most of that time was having to fiddle with a metal spacer that came with the replacement from Amazon. Super simple (and I did not disconnect the battery.)
That’s what happened to mine. I was going to just glue it back on but I’m having trouble finding just the glass (mine shattered). However, Automotive Goop is what was recommended.
Just watched this to figure out if I can DIY swapping to euro mirror glass on my JSW and that definitely looks easy enough lol. they are aspherical so there's way less blindspots
You must disconnect the negative cable from the battery first. But your idea is good because most of the videos dont mencion this before replace the mirror.

Good video. Mine started coming loose today . Noticed it while driving. Damn thing was shaking big time. At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me 😂.
I'm playing on just ordering the mirror and not the heating element, is there a specific glue I should use? I guess it's there a glue that doesn't take damage from heating up. Jb weld?
can i touch thee wires with my bare hands in the battery isn’t disconnected? or should i have gloves. also can i use pliers for the wires if battery is still connected? thanks
On my Vw Caddy there is not enough length in the wires for the heating element for me to be able to get my fat fingers behind the glass to reconnect. Any tips?
Hi Jason! This looks very helpful. Quick question though: what was the reason you wanted to have the car on when replacing the glass? Wouldn't leaving the car off negate the need to disable the battery? I'm sure i'm asking a stupid question but I just wanted to verify/clarify. thank you!
he only turned it on to move the mirror, I guess he never specified to turn it off. Disconnecting the battery was just an extra step since you’re working with the wires a little bit
My rear view mirror is loose, just drove on the thruway and he bottom was shaking in the wind. From your video it seems it should just snap back on. Can you confirm?
So my connections on my 2013 jetta se are corroded & they won't come off any suggestions?? Thinking cut them off cause i dont drive the car in the winter anyway
Quick question. The glass part only fell off for some reason for my Passat. Everything else is still intact. Can I just glue it or does it need replacing entirely?
There is a metal protrusion (that you can see in this video) that didn't or doesn't come with the replacement mirror. It was actually quite hard to remove (as it is not designed to be removed)and as such you should really cover this bit of the process which requires some brute force.
I tried to change mine and when i got to changing the wires over i couldnt pull them off the original mirror thought they had been soldered or was i maybe not trying hard enough
Most new cars now, disconnecting the battery can reset electrical items in the car which then won't work, or need resetting via a PC. I wouldn't recommend disconnecting for this type of job.
@@JasonExplainsThings thanks I had to snap them off the back of the mirror and get pliers to pull out the metal bit stuck in the wires. Happy I have a new mirror now tho,👍

Was so happy to have paid just 5 bux for a mirror from the wreckers - just to come home and realize the same year Golf isn't the same shape as the Jetta's. A slightly less dumber person would simply remove one of the wires and wrap it in electrical tape until you're ready to reinstall. But what do I know, I bought the wrong mirror.
Sorry for the stupid question but does the battery need to disconnected?
No, probably not. I was a little overzealous the day I did this. :-)

From my research the defrost might not work properly if you just glue new glass on.
