@Daryl Wheeler That's Lee Thornburg, and he was a member of Tower from '85-'94 (and then briefly again in 2011). He was also in Chicago (subbing for Lee Loughnane's wife was having a baby), Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, Supertramp and many more. He presently plays with Joe Bonamassa.
@@Entertainlaw ... Loved when he was in the Jack Mack & the Heart Attack singing alongside Max G. doing his thing. Entertainment value the Heart Attack was even better than Tower of Power plus Max was a true showman & great, great singer !
Was this Paul's favorite band they had on? I love Tower of Power. Oh and this was before Seinfeld the tv show. Jerry wasn't really famous yet. neat episode, I like watching old stuff on youtube, is like a time machine.
I knew it! Anytime a horn section sits in with Paul and the band be it a special show (not an anniversary special) they play a brassy version of the theme music! Also, others who have sat in with the band include most frequently, David Sanborn, plus George Clinton's P-Funk Horns, The Uptown Horns, Pat Matheny, Danny Gatton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Walsh, Jeff Healey, Joe Satriani, Carlos Santana and percussion, the 10,000 Maniacs horns, Al Chesnovitz and Bruce Kapler, Tom Scott, Van Morrison's horns, Buckwheat Zydeco, Michael Brecker, The Texas Tornados, and Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir. 1984 episodes rotated guitarists Steve Khan and Jef Lee along with Sid McGinnis (who would be permanent a short time later) after Hiram Bullock was fired.
Thanks for this, Don. My teenage self watched the original airing, then bought the album. So cool to see it here. By chance do you have the anniversary show (could be 5-year?) where they brought in a horn section with Jon Faddis and Freddie Hubbard, among others?
In the band on this show: Greg Adams, Emilio Castillo, Richard Elliot, Stephen Kupka, and Lee Thornburg. If Paul, who knows this stuff inside and out, can identify them as the Tower of Power Horns, then that’s who they are.
One of the greatest Funk band of all time and horn section!! Have loved this band since the 70s when I first heard them.
you can never get enough Tower of Power, back then and Now!
This band is an American Legend!!!
And still not in the R&R hall.
I always enjoyed how much respect Dave had for the music - and musicians on his show.
yeah, he is loving this!
What a great sound. Feel the power. The Tower of Power.
We not gon mention them bari scoops Doc is killin???? Ok :)

That was one badass horn section .
Ya think ??? :) :)
Still is! :)
Present tense! Is and will be!
I remember seeing this show when it aired. Was so proud that my favorite band T.O.P. was on the show!
Greatest Horn Section
I love finding these letterman clips in the wild, they’re great
Loved this I was watching this show when they announced TOP I thought no way!!
For years Paul & the band used "Squib Cakes" and "Down to the Nightclub" as easy go-tos for buffers in-and-out of commercials.
Lee Thornburg was tearing it up that night!!!
One of the few Lee has lead vocal.
Visually, he looks like Jimmy Hart from 80s WWF wrestling :P
Lee still sounds great! Did a gig with him in Florida back in December...🎵🎵🎵

Saw TOP. This month in 1987. At Calamity Jane’s in Vegas.
Then in 92-93-96-97-98-2002

I really miss this show.

Jason Nadle Maynard Ferguson also sat in a few times.
Thornberg's outfit tearing it up!
There was an episode that aired several months later that also had the Tower of Power horn section, this time Chris Mulkey performed with them.
Will Lee is one of the very best bassists around. Fabulous musicianship on that stage!
He ain't ROCCO PRESTIA.
@@melvynobrien6193 :) I feel you...But then again..who is ?? There's only one. Will Lee ain't no slouch by no measure tho!!
@@melvynobrien6193 I love Rocco but he ain't Will Lee.
I loved Rocco.
@@karenrolandvarpa1693 Absolutely!
Paul Shaffer is America’s band leader. Hugely underrated
I miss this
It doesn't get ANY TIGHTER.
I’m a total power freak I love this band great video
fkn groovy jam
Their biggest album was their self-titled album which was certified Gold because of the single "So Very Hard To Go " 1973

I’ve uploaded all of the anniversary specials. The one you’re looking for is the 6th from 1988. That’s here - ua-cam.com/video/RV1rZzc6ClI/v-deo.html
@@dongiller Fantastic. Forever indebted to ya.
9:30 What is going on with his neck?
I remember they'd sit in on Friday night... but didn't he ban them from the show after they had the audacity to go on Arsenio?
Evidence?
Listen to The Doctor bumpin
Lee Thornburg a vocalist? Who new?
Check out the early Jack Mack & the Heart Attack 💔
Lee sang lead a few tunes & did the sing along responses and harmony w/ Max G. on lead vocals
When the band was done and Dave was walking to the singer who does he say you ok too? Thanks
🤘🏿
That's not the "Tower of Power" horn section. Unless this is the second incarnation. But they were close.
In the band on this show: Greg Adams, Emilio Castillo, Richard Elliot, Stephen Kupka, and Lee Thornburg.
If Paul, who knows this stuff inside and out, can identify them as the Tower of Power Horns, then that’s who they are.
Debbie Reynolds is sitting in with Dave!
Here are her two Dave appearances -- one on Late Night and one on Late Show: ua-cam.com/video/EnPHNgby5Uw/v-deo.html
Is Paul reading the names when introducing them??!! Wwwhhhaaattt??
I saw them at Bottom Line that weekend , Paul was a recent fan and really did not know TOP 's history .
I guess there aren't many Castillo's where Paul grew up?
u have a big shoe
Too bad Richard Elliott went to the dark side
Richard Elliot went solo and produced 14 albums. He loves his path and is always a fraternal member of TOP
@@popal7408 Trust me...Richard is doing just fine :)
