Is ADHD Part of Long COVID?

  • We’re still struggling to find a precise definition of, and methods to diagnose, Long COVID, but a substantial minority of those infected with the coronavirus have symptoms that persist for weeks to years after being infected. Among the most prominent symptoms of Long COVID are fatigue and cognitive/executive function disturbances.
    Researchers have documented both subjective complaints of, and detectable impairments in, immediate memory, delayed memory, planning, and visual attention. Preliminary work indicates that pre-frontal attentional circuitry is more implicated than memory-encoding network deficits. These findings suggest a strong overlap with core executive function deficits described in ADHD.
    Long COVID is likely to increase the severity of symptoms of those already with ADHD, convert some “subsyndromal” cases of ADHD to meet full ADHD criteria, and create new cases of “secondary ADHD”.
    Recovery from the cognitive effects of Long COVID remains possible, but exploration of who is most vulnerable, predictors for improvement or resolution of symptoms, and best treatments, are still in their infancy.

    Maybe it is. When I got Covid I got crazy crazy crazy Brain fog. From Covid and up until this point I have not been mentally the same. I just got diagnosed for ADHD at 20 years old last Friday. I think I was always a strange person but I have never struggled in life like I have in these past few years.

      Update: I have been on Guanfacine and vyvanse for 2 months. Guanfacine helped my hyper activity, brain fog, and emotional regulation. Vyvanse helps with drowsiness, and motivation.
      Anyways I just came back across this video and I decided to buy the supplements you mentioned. Acetylcystine, ginkgo biloba. I also bought one more supplement called quercetin which is another anti oxidant and lastly zinc. I took them all today and omg there is a significant difference. Guanfcaine dampens my vyvanse so I’m not really able to feel it, but today after taking those supplements it seems that the positive effects of vyvanse that get weakened when taken with guanfcaine came back. My mind was calm, and it actually felt like I used a stimulant. Now I don’t know if these supplements effected the effecasy of Guanfacine, or if they just interact in some type of positive way. Or if they just help out the brain unrelated. Anyways, I feel very motivated for task initiation which was something that I was missing before.
      For the next few days I’ll conduct my own clinical trial and I’ll only take one of those different supplements each day along with my vyvanse and Guanfacine and I’ll see which one of the supplement is having these effects or if it’s a combo. I’ll also have one day where I take none of those just as a final control to compare with. I’ll update anyone who’s interested. Just reply.

    Exactly right. I never had skin issues in my entire life. Caught covid and BOOM: skin problems. The fatigue is probably the worst symptom.

    Hi doc, I've stumbled on you searching up buspirone, as I'm on my 2nd day taking these new meds whilst I wait for my adhd assessment. This is really interesting because I had covid 2 years ago and I never thought it could cause adhd or make it worse. Since covid I've had this horrible thing going on with my throat, like a feel a lump or some sort of damaged tissue maybe coming from the back of my nose making it very uncomfortable some days. Have you any advice on this please?
    Thanks Doc

      Other than getting a good evaluation from an ear-nose-and-throat doctor to make sure that the anatomy of your nasal and throat passages are okay, I don't have any other good ideas of how to deal with what you have described.

    Hi! I remember LDN being discussed for ME/CFS in the 2010's and I've read something about it being used for adhd fatigue, do you have any updated knowledge on this?
    Thank you 🌻

      If you're referring to low dose naltrexone, I have not heard of that being used for ADHD, but I will look into this, and if I find enough information I will talk about it.

    Hey Dr Kruse, two unrelated questions (or, at least, maybe very tangentially related): (1) If being in a state of ketosis increases blood and urine acidity, and increased urine and blood acidity lower amphetamine plasma levels, does this mean a ketogenic diet could actually reduce the effects of amphetamine? (2) I have read some anecdotal evidence about memantine intensifying the effects of stimulants in ADHD, as well as potentially staving off, or even reversing, tolerance to stimulants. Do you know anything about this?

    • @DrJohnKruse
      @DrJohnKruse  3 місяці тому

      Theoretically yes, but practically most people I have worked with have not noticed much change in stimulant effective doses regardless of how acidic or basic their diet is, so this effect seems to be small in most people. I don't know of any research about the combination of memantine and stimulants, but I have seen some individuals who felt that they benefitted from the combination.

    Hey great topic enjoy your video. Quick question are you aware of any papers about ADHD, brain fog, high cholesterol and aspirin? When 80mg of aspirin and a statin after a TIA (390 cl and 169/101 heart) are a miracle, fixed every I have been dealing with since 2021 any possibility long-covid. Thanks if you have any data, going to a top neurologist in a few weeks for a full work up and MRI. Looking for more education on this combo before then.

    I am struggling to know if it is an effect of COVID or PTSD from the two years that destroyed my business and almost cost me my home, which would have cost me my children (I am divorced and have full-time custody). I am shocked at how we all treated each other, and I am sickened that the hard work I had put in to build the business that allowed me to buy a home and care for my children as a single part was wiped away from me with no concern by any NGO let alone the government.

      I'm sorry that the COVID pandemic was so harsh towards you. It can be very tricky to untangle biological after-effects of this virus from the social and psychological impact it had on many lives.

      @@DrJohnKruse To be fair to everyone there needs to be a properly studied scientific separation on mental effects derived from the effects of disease, isolation, media encouraged bullying of those who those who trusted their natural immunity, psychological damage from government over reach, and ultimately acknowledgement that mental symptoms could be adverse effects of the vaccines. Proper studies are needed because all those barking up the long covid tree are very likely to also have partook of the concoction. True science and honesty demand an inquiry.

  • @lagomorphia9

    Could be the shots too. Not everyones body tolerated them well. Also, those who got them were probably more likely to test for covid and thus long term symptoms that were blamed on long covid, might actually be adverse effects of the shots. Not saying this to cause trouble... I had flu one time that took over six months to recover from so I know it can linger but scientifically it seems messed up to not separate long covid cases by whether or not the person took the shots. It could change or improve treatment options.

    • @DrJohnKruse
      @DrJohnKruse  12 днів тому

      It's a good point. Some people clearly had long and lingering effects from the vaccine. But to flip your point, there were also probably some individuals who blamed reactions on the vaccine when they also caught COVID around the same time, and their problems might be due to the virus and not the vaccine. Only a few studies have tried to separate long term effects from the virus versus from vaccination.
