  • In this video Tess and Suzanne show you how to wrap the oboe reed. This is the first step in making a new oboe reed and must be completed before any other steps. Tess and Suz also cover what reedmaking equipment you will need and how to troubleshoot common reedmaking problems.

THANK YOU! My oboe teacher in high school charged an insane amount on top of oboe lessons to teach reed making and kept rescheduling despite paying in advance so I never actually got to learn how to make my own reeds.
I'm going to attempt to self teach while watching your videos. Wish me luck!

Just wanted you to know, I’ve had my reed making kit for nearly 30 years. I posted it free hoping to find a good and deserving candidate to appreciate it. I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful young lady at 13, motivated to learn. I sent it with her tonight after briefly reviewing the tools and basic considerations. I reviewed many videos and truly appreciated your approach and explanations and referred her to your tutorials. Thank you for bringing light to the beautiful art of reed making and also such a detailed and fantastic explanation/demonstration. 💖🙏

Instead of tying the thread to a C-Clamp, I was taught to stick the end of the thread into the staple, and than put the mandril in. This will fixate the thread and you can wrap the thread more easily. In the end after closing is with a noose or a knot, you can take the thread out of the staple and tie a knot from both ends on the thread.

How long should the cane soak for? Also thank you for making these videos! I’m just relearning how to wrap a blank to get better.

    It’s nylon thread. Not string.
