Just wanted you to know, I’ve had my reed making kit for nearly 30 years. I posted it free hoping to find a good and deserving candidate to appreciate it. I had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful young lady at 13, motivated to learn. I sent it with her tonight after briefly reviewing the tools and basic considerations. I reviewed many videos and truly appreciated your approach and explanations and referred her to your tutorials. Thank you for bringing light to the beautiful art of reed making and also such a detailed and fantastic explanation/demonstration. 💖🙏

To close the tip I found that if you close the end of the reed with your finger, spit in and suck on the reed, hold a bit, it will close. Worked for me, but hey I'm a cellist and playing oboe for fun.

THANK YOU! My oboe teacher in high school charged an insane amount on top of oboe lessons to teach reed making and kept rescheduling despite paying in advance so I never actually got to learn how to make my own reeds. I'm going to attempt to self teach while watching your videos. Wish me luck!

Instead of tying the thread to a C-Clamp, I was taught to stick the end of the thread into the staple, and than put the mandril in. This will fixate the thread and you can wrap the thread more easily. In the end after closing is with a noose or a knot, you can take the thread out of the staple and tie a knot from both ends on the thread.

Apparently I need to get myself a better knife or something. I have a really hard time trying to shave any cane with it, and it just messes up the tip of my reeds. I don't know if it's something I'm doing wrong or if it's my knife. But I ruin a lot of my reeds because of my knife. Anybody have any ideas?

A very good video🙂. I took notes and followed your steps and I actually produced a reed that played. Yay. I'm so happy. I'm not sure if it plays in tune but I suppose using these simple but informative videos I will figure it out.

It is interesting how "brutal"(very exadurated) she is able to scrape the reed. In my expericence, european or german style reeds are much harder to scrape, because they are more delicate(because you only scrape the first centemeter of the reed). If you do one mistake there, the reed is pretty much wasted, while american reeds can be still adjusted and saved, therefore more easy to scrape.

In terms of “crowing” to C#, is this done all the way on the thread? Lovely video!

It’s called “dusting” and it cleans off the dried dead skin and mineral deposits that build up on the reed and prevents it from vibrating.
