    Thank you so much for your videos. I'm a not-quite beginner oboist who is just getting into reed making and this has been so helpful for me. Many many thanks!

    This video has been so helpful to me! My reeds have improved drastically since stumbling upon it. I watch it and the second day scrape video all the time now while I’m doing reeds. Thanks for the great content Danny!

    i’m starting a new school and thought “hey, why not start oboe?😃”. i play trumpet and thought that oboe would be a nice change. it looks like a lot of commitment but in a good way

    Pretty impressive for a Day 1 reed. I guess learning the finesse just takes a lot of practice.

      Hi Kaden I dont think there is a perfect time, but if you are interested and willing to work hard at it it can be fun to get started when you and your teacher feel you are ready..... reeedy? idk lol I didnt start untill I was a freshman in college, but I have students who start in highschool and one who started in eighth grade. Ive been teaching some reed making online this year and the students vary in age and skill.
      It is really up to you. Keep in mind that it may be some time before you are self sufficient and its important to understand what a good reed feels like before you start with a knife and cane. Good luck! Let us know how things progress for you!

    So I'm confused. Should the spine have actual bark on it or not? None of my teacher's reeds' spines have bark on them, but I didn't see you remove any bark from the spine itself (could have been the camera angle though).

    • @OboeFiles
      @OboeFiles  11 днів тому

      No bark on the spine when ur done for sure, the knife stays out of the middle to make a spine but incidentally takes the bark off as you scrape the initial scrape

    thanks for the video. My main difficulty is to get a crow. After thinning the tip to vibrate, I start thinning the heart to get the crow but can't consistently get it. is it due to poor V-shape sloping or is it due to the heart still too thick pls?

    • @OboeFiles
      @OboeFiles  4 роки тому +1

      Its hard to say without seeing it or trying it, but something may be stopping the vibration through the body of the reed. Could be too much cane somewhere but hard to know where without seeing it.

    Hey @Oboe Files do you have any tips on how to get better at scraping a reed? I am trying my best to be able to make a reed that works but I'm pretty limited on tools and supplies so I'm kind of desperate to get better without wasting too many pieces of canes. My knife isnt the best either and I cant seem to get it sharp enough to be able to smoothly scrape the reed. My parents are also doubting me on this and I doubt I'll be able to get more supplies so if you have any tips please spare some for me. Thank you!

      A sharp knife is the most important thing!!! I have some videos on sharpening that may help, but I can not repeat enough how important a sharp knife is :)

      HI! I soak the shaped piece of cane for 30 minutes and then tie and scrape. I don't let it dry out until the end of the first day, let me know if that helps :)
