    ✅ Discover what to eat to lower blood sugar, lose weight, and get your best A1c ever

    Leading gastroenterologist, Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, talks about a recent study that aimed to see the results of eating a completely whole food, plant-based diet and animal-based, ketogenic diet.
    The study was conducted by nutrition and metabolism scientist Dr. Kevin Hall who wanted to see which diet would lead to greater satiety (while eating until one is full), weight loss, lower insulin and more stable blood sugar levels. And surprise, surprise low fat, whole food, plant-based community. The outcomes were eye opening.
    If you want to lose weight FAST, then a ketogenic diet is something you would want to choose. But if you want to lose FAT to improve your insulin sensitivity and be healthy inside and out. . . Then keep that pantry filled with whole grains, fruits and starchy vegetables. Because , again -- t's true what they say about ketones. They don't equate to fat loss. And that's not good even for someone who doesn't have diabetes.
    There's more to unpack from this plant-based vs keto debate -- so here's Dr. B for the rest of the nitty-gritty.

    On the PBD, for the second time, I'm achieving great results. ~5 weeks, 20 pounds. First time, 30 pounds in 2 months. And this was Fuhrman Diet for the week, sliding in weekends. Not exercising, desk job, much like now. Most of the program, I could eat as much as I want. And this had no IF program, but I'm doing this now. I own a house-driven gas bbq for grilling, a fantastic smoker for meats. I love meat. This approach has saved my life, at least once, and I can't say enough to try it out. Oh...and my kitchen gets clean and I save money on buying fruit & veg. Olive oil closure!

The plant based diet lowered my bp and cholesterol and I also felt very good. The plant based diet also helped with my arthritis pain. They'll both lower your diabetes, but the keto will leave you with higher BP and cholesterol levels. Plus it could damage your kidneys. Everytime I tried it (over a month), I felt like crap, and I felt like my kidneys were failing. Yes I consumed more potassium and did all the little tricks.
    Everytime I'm on a low fat plant-only diet, I lose weight, feel better, and all my numbers drop dramatically. My only problem, is it's so hard to stay away from junk food. I'm not gonna lie, I'll shovel down a Big Mac if I get the chance.

    My opinion is that both low carb and whole plant diets are way better than the standard american diet. Health would be much better long term with both groups.
    However, I love how people can read a study and cherry pick the findings. Perhaps the biggest finding was that the baseline glycemic index and insulin was considerably higher with the high carb diet. This with healthy late 20s subjects. Do 30 more years of that and see what happens.
    With the sugar challenge, the folks on low carb will have adapted to some extent to low sugars, so they would not have the machinery in place to deal with a sudden sugar influx. It doesn't really matter if your body deals not so well with sugar if you rarely put sugar into it. Most important is baseline sugar long term.
    Also baseline triglycerides (a more important risk factor than cholesterol) was lower in the low carb group.
    My personal experience is that my weight and bp went down with low carb. I have been mostly weight stable for my 60 years, and I went down 15 pounds to what I think is a very good weight. I have seen good success with health markers with those around me who tried it. I see many personal stories of massive (not just water) weight loss in people who probably had a terrible diet for many years. I am doing an experiment with mostly meat and egg consumption and my digestive problems have improved lots compared when I was using lots of high fiber vegies. I also don't eat continually. I eat 2 meals a day only an occasional snack. Since I am older, I am experimenting with fasting as a way to self heal. Notice both vegan and lc approaches use this.
    I look at stories about those who transition from one diet to another, and mostly I see vegan to low carb. I see a few the other way and acknowledge that for some a whole plant based diet is best suited. I look for countervailing evidence and am open to making changes. This study did not convince me one way or another.
    I would like to see a similar study using older subjects with type 2 diabetes.

      I agree with you on these points. Personally I feel better on a WHOLE food plant based diet with maybe very occasional animal foods (special occasions, just a bit), no snacking with not eating after dinner. Whenever I try eating animal food again daily my bp and cholesterol go up, and I get digestive issues (constipation mostly) and in general am just kind of repulsed by animal foods. I've been both-vegan and omnivore. Spiritually I feel better not eating animals. But health wise, I can't speak for everyone and do not believe one must be vegan to be healthy, that would be a ridiculous thing to say given mankind's history of eating animals for thousands of years.

Went over to WHOLE food plant base diet and I and lost 17kgs so far plus reversed insulin resistance. I feel great and all digestive issues and skin issues cleared up. So much information on how to reverse diebties it is overwhelming each one of them have a valid point, it makes my head spinning and so confused who to go with I my self stopped eating processed foods and I don’t eat allot of fats my diet is high on protein tho and doing that not cuz I’m following a diet because I can’t do keto because it is so expensive from where I live and I haven’t venture into the only plant based yet since I’m newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes but it seem I will give it ago in some day if my diet that I’m doing right now failed me tho I’m losing weight in Avery good way from 120kg approximately now I’m at 95kg
    I like to educate my self even before getting diabetes but the amount of the information about reversing diabetes seem is far more complicated than what I thought they are so many factors to it than just a simple diet.
    I believe both diets are great and work + low carbs diet it just differ from one person to another because ( gen’s, culture, environment, etc) I think they are to many type 2 diabetes we just didn’t discover this yet
    But the culprit of them all is fats and how to lose fats. I think it have to do with our gens and our eating habits (what is our fats made off previously)
    DONT GIVE UP HOPES WORRIERS WE CAN WIN THIS BATTLE
    My verdict it is all about our microbiaom for now

    I agree this study is a big deal because of it's accuracy in measurements, the unbiased nature of the researcher, and the high level of competence of the researcher. There's big social, corporate and governmental change required to make a difference in this country. Two big things are somehow countering the advertising and education to eat poorly, as well as something to counter the addition to the hyper-palatable foods designed for maximum corporate profits.

  • @TommysPianoCorner
    @TommysPianoCorner 9 місяців тому +4

    Even I know that study is hopelessly flawed. It is a well known experience that the initial weight loss on Keto is largely water and also the glycogen stores in muscles (hence reduced muscle mass). The body in general takes a couple of weeks to adapt. So, doing it for 2 weeks guarantees the results of which you speak!
    Clinical experience in general points to consistent weight loss on keto over months and years. Does that mean it is better than plant based? Probably not. But it doesn’t make it worse either!
    Do you have any studies of people with T2D reversing their condition on WFPB diets? I’d be interested to read one - and not something that lasted just a few weeks.
    Equally, something that does not simply rely on dramatic weight loss (which we know will make the symptoms of diabetes go away initially).
    Whether people like it or not, even the world’s diabetes associations are starting to publicly recognize that low carbohydrate diets ‘fix’ diabetes without the need for medication.

    • @Cancellator5000
      @Cancellator5000 5 місяців тому

      Yeah, I think if the only thing you care about is losing weight over a couple months or more, particularly fat, then WFPB seems ideal. Everybody that went WFPB for 2 weeks lost a significant amount of fat and it seems like the weight loss wasn't slowing down, which did seem to be happening with keto. It makes sense since people naturally eat fewer calories on WFPB, so you will reach a lower weight on it. Does it really fix diabetes or just manage symptoms? I'd look at a review "A plant-based diet for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes". There is one randomized clinical trial cited that lasted 3 months and WFPB is shown to be better than a conventional diet people are put on with diabetes. Also, there's such a thing as vegan keto. Since WFPB does better for this comparing similar macro breakdown, I'd presume that WFPB that restricts carbs further would do better while allowing for more carbs in the diet. The name of that study is "Effect of a Brown Rice Based Vegan Diet and Conventional Diabetic Diet on Glycemic Control of Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A 12-Week Randomized Clinical Trial" and they controlled for the effect of weight loss.

    • @TommysPianoCorner
      @TommysPianoCorner 5 місяців тому

      @@Cancellator5000 I think you’ve mis-read what I put. A 2 week ‘trial’ proves absolutely nothing. It is well recognized that adapting to a low carb diet takes at least 2 weeks (often oddly referred to as the ‘keto flu’). Unless these researchers were simply incompetent, then it looks like they created a study where they already knew the outcome rather than doing it properly to incorporate a run in period. Simply disingenuous!
      Similarly, comparing any diet to a ‘conventional’ diet would probably get better results. However, all the proud WFPB proponents seem happy with an A1C around 6 which I personally would not be happy about. I’ll take a look at that review - however just by the title I suspect it is an ‘opinion’ piece so don’t expect much science beyond a few epidemiological associations.
      One advantage we diabetics do have is that our reaction to food is super easy to judge (glucose meters are easily available) and so when that ‘heart healthy whole grain’ pushes blood glucose well beyond accepted clinical levels, we can decide either to eat more or not eliminate it (and I know what I choose).

Furthermore I can add that after eating keto for the past 3 years my BMI went from 36 to 18 so I can't imagine that has all been liquid and muscles that I lost... It kind of nonsense that testing for 2 weeks is meaningful and is this typically how people actually do keto. And in about 6 months i clearly lost a lot of fat. And really keto works best with intermittent fasting. And typically this is the kind of study you see so bias is clearly an issue.

      Yes! Fat is healthy - you don’t need to go on an extreme low fat diet unless that works for you. This MD diet is for people that have impaired insulin sensitivity but the science says if you lose enough weight to lose visceral fat which varies you can eat a balanced diet. I think low fat is recommended because it helps people eat more without tracking but the science is very clear that mono and polyunsaturated fats are beneficial.

    Glucose intolerance and insulin resistance are not the same thing. The ketogenic diet does not cause insulin resistance. It causes glucose intolerance. There is a difference.
    Tolerance to something you don't consume is irrelevant.
    Consumption of glucose eight hours before the intolerance test fixes the issue of the test. It isn't insulin resistance,

    @ronaldkoch2766 Рік тому +4

    People who are actually knowledgeable about the keto diet are not recommending 75% fat. That is a big misconception about keto, that it needs to be a low carb high fat diet. The whole point is to put your body in a state of ketosis which forces it to use stored body fat for fuel instead of glucose. You are not suppose to be eating copious amounts of fat, which is calorie dense, because you would be giving your body too much fuel, and that defeats the point. Also nobody is saying the fat in the diet needs to be saturated fat from animal sources, it does not. Mono and poly unsaturated fats work just fine, but you actually need more protein than fat. All in all you still need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight. As far as carbs... carbs are not the enemy, high glycemic foods are. You need the fiber and can eat plenty of plants with low net carbs.
    Keto is useful for losing excess body fat and/or reversing insulin resistance, but people are not suppose to live in ketosis. It is something the body needs to cycle in and out of. As natural animals we would sometimes find food and sometimes not. Ketosis is the mechanism by which we survive when there is no food available. But in modern society we depend on corporations to manufacture food for us and pack the store shelves, and this is mostly very poor quality processed foods, and it is available 24/7, so nobody has to go without food, which is not the way our bodies were designed to work.

    Should we worry about phytates and oxalates? Besides diabetes bone health is very important do phytates and oxalates from plant foods prevent the absorption of healthy bone building minerals? Phytates actually have some benefits and might not be a problem if you eat over the RDA for zinc and other minerals or you test and if you are low you can look into supplements but oxalates have no benefits- if you don’t have a history of kidney stones you may not need to worry much but the foods that are ones to limit are spinach beet greens and chard - you can still eat them but I wouldn’t put them in a smoothie and wouldn’t eat them a ton - kale and collards and broccoli are all relatively low and for grains oats are really low in oxalate - you can find all kinds of food lists on line and drive yourself crazy but the ones I listed above are the heavy hitters you are likely to run into
