Please never get rid of the mama mia dramatic zoom in music
This analysis was BEAUTIFUL! I love the deconstruction of the sound behind the song that not only adds to the lyrical meaning but, and this sounds incredibly vague, that pensive vibe next semester brings. The video was masterfully written and masterfully made!
I am incredibly honoured that my own analysis inspired this, and I cannot wait to hear your thoughts on SAI!
This song is super pensive, you're right! That's probably part of what draws me to it. Honored you had a chance to watch this and I'm glad you liked it!
one of my favorite content creators talking about one of my favorite bands? crossover of the century easily
My thoughts exactly!
“hey kid get out of the road” I love how that expresses how that when blurryface screams at us that our lives are worthless/hopeless and that we should just die, Jesus says something quite different & has different plans for us than that. ❤️in the album booklet, Tyler gives a “Giant shoutout to God for keeping him alive”. ❤️
I've been fortunate enough to never have struggled with full-on suicidal ideation, but as someone who had their first ever panic attack in my Christian college at 1am in the art building bathroom because I wasn't gonna finish my pointalism project on time and everyone was gonna know I was a fraud, I've never related to a song(or video essay) more.
Guess I'll listen to the new TØP for the first time in half a decade
Trevor coming out a s a clikkie was not on my 2024 bingo card but HELL I'M HERE FOR THE RIDE
(haha ride haha i'm so funny haha)
Thank you for pointing it out, because I latched on to the phrase 'hey kid, get out of the road' at first listen. The same way I did with 'neon gravestones call for my bones, but they won't get them'. Certain very obvious lyrics in Car Radio, Migraine and Truce connected me to the music in the first place, years ago. There are so many phrases ingrained into my brain at this point, I could probably find a fitting one for almost every situation. And I know that's what some people find overused in their music, but for every song begging people to stay alive, there was a day where I was grateful for it. It's nice to have a screaming voice in your head whose opinion differs from your own. (Also, this has no place in this comment but I felt the need to point it out: love your look
Shoutout @Good_Day_Dema for making a dope video about Next Semester that inspired me to make this one!
You can’t play the truce instrumental over this 😭😭 (sobbing; great video)
One of my favorite video essayists covering my favorite Clancy song??? This is the UA-cam video of the century.
Stumbled on this and watched because it's still my favorite TØP song after the full album drop.
Loved the video. Looked at your channel and I just watched the "explaining deconstruction" video three times.
Hilarious, aware, informative, relatable to my experience as a now ["6.9 on the Dawkin's scale"] atheist.
Job, Elijah and Jonah are some of the Old Testament prophets that dealt with suicidal thoughts. Job had his desire for that coming from despair, having lost his children. Elijah from exhaustion and frustration, more closely aligned with this song. Jonah wanted death out of spite, twice. God told them all no. That the ending of their lives was not a solution. Job was shown the world was bigger than he thought. Elijah was shown he wasn't alone. Jonah was shown compassion and perspective. They were all given a second chance to try again. Jonah, a third.
A prophet is a person who speaks the words of God or in some cases lives out a metaphor of something very true. I think the words "Hey kid, get out of the road!" Are spoken by the driver, and God, and Tyler, and you, and I would say them too. I appreciated your words, and your effort to isolate the lyrics and dive deep, getting to the message of hope and the offer of a chance to try again. As a middle aged man with a close relationship of the themes of this tune, and the whole record, I really enjoyed your analysis. I have my own notes on deconstruction, as well as your portrayal of Christian theology, but that can wait. Instead, a like for your video and a comment. I think it deserves more views.
I loved this analysis and the key change is especially notable.
That B chord is a great example of a secondary dominant chord being used to modulate the key back and forth.
Hear me out - the key starts in A and moves to E. A secondary dominant chord is typically used to modulate to a new key. In music school, they talk about a V/V (called “five of five”). The V is the chord built on the fifth note of the current key. With that in mind, a “five of five” is the fifth chord from the key of the fifth scale degree of the current key.
For example, A B C D E - E is your fifth scale degree in the key of A. Therefore, if we’re moving to the key of E, that’s the fifth scale degree of A. The B major chord is the fifth chord of the key of E - E, F#, G#, A, B - there it is. The secondary dominant chord.
I didn't even know this!! Thanks for explaining this Kacey, this is really great additional insight!
I appreciated this analysis. Personally, I can't listen to TØP without getting introspective about my faith and coming away all the stronger for it. I appreciate the psalmistic vibes ingrained in their music.
For twenty one pilots lore, nalbis makes some of my favorite videos!
i listened to the song a lot a few weeks ago and i liked it, but never really gave it much thought (not a regular TØP listener) and omg did this analysis open up my eyes (and more than that because i also cried lol) amazing video❤
I just love people like you, who take stuff apart so deeply just for fun. I wish I knew people who liked that stuff😂
OMG I NEVER EXPECTED YOU TO TALK ABOUT TWENTY ONE PILOTS (my favorite band), and especially not Next Semester (which I love), I have never clicked on a video faster in my life !!
Twenty one Pilots saying is "Stay Alive" for a reason.
i feel like there is a strong connection between the next semester and oldies station. we have matching keys and if you play them one after another we have a continuum of the ukulele sections.
also the topic is simillar, in next semester we have a motif of trying to start fresh everytime you feel like giving up - in the oldies station we have the motif of pushing through the tough times (basically the same thing).
next semester is a song about young tyler - oldies is written from a perspective of mature tyler.
and the music videos!!! we have next semester MV ending with tyler with his shirt off outside, suggesting it is warm outside, then we have oldies where he experience cold weather, but he is weraing a jacket. he walked through his life since the early days (spring) up until becoming old (winter). the oldies station is about adjusting and learning with every single fall how to get back on track again.
excuse me, i just had to say it because i had this realisation that i thing everybody should have. stream oldies!!!!!!!!!!!!!111
I just finished the video and I have to say how INCREDIBLE this analysis was. Also the editing is so so good. Love how you looked at it from a music theory perspective, as well as lyrics and the MV. My nerd brain’s been fed well today
I felt like you were describing my first semester of uni when talking about yours. Its interesting that a lot of us experience the same thing but we would never know it
Terrific, insightful review of Next Semester. I have listened to this song a ton but never made the connection that you did of Josh’s drums getting increasingly frantic as the protagonist’s panic attack heightens.
This band and this Clancy album is so multi-layered 🔥❤💛
love this video
fantastic video man
What an incredibly beautiful analysis. Keep up the good work!
not my fav media analysis guy analyzing my favorite band!! I loved this so much
Your takes are fire 🔥🔥🔥
omg you got the first comment!!
I’ve been waiting for someone to do a video about Clancy, and it’s one of the best new video essay channels I’ve found!
I haven't even gotten into this yet but the leeewwwk is incredible.
this was great dude, this song is incredible indeed!! you just got another subscriber
i loved this song when it first came out but since the rest of the album dropped i've been focussed on the newer songs, this analysis helped me remember how i felt when i first heard it and gave me new reasons to love it, thanks!
Next Semester is easily my favorite TØP song, and that is saying a lot considering that I have been a fan for years and love their entire discography.
Not only is it somewhere within the realm of my favorite genres, there is a reason for it. You summed it up so well in this video.
As someone who is a Christian, I actually fully agree with your analysis of Christianity and have a lot of sad experiences to back it up, some of them are all too similar to the experience captured in this song. I think the idea of “denying your flesh” is widely misinterpreted. Hence, I let so many things happen to me in the name of “love,” but it was actually hurting me spiritually.
I also wonder if the contrast in the last couple lines, “I don’t wanna be here, start fresh with a new year” could be part of a conversation? I’ve noticed a lot of songs in Clancy have dialogue in them, but I can see it either way.
All this to say, your analysis was amazing and it made me love the song even more!
this is a really well made video. good job. this made me appreciate the song even more.
so good
You articulated so many of my thoughts about this song so perfectly and reminded me why I love it so much. I’m excited to see you talk more about them, clearly they hold a lot of meaning to you as they do to a lot of us fans. I discovered them about eight or nine years ago now and this album dropped at the perfect time of my life where I’m directing relating to so many of the lyrics. I love twenty one pilots, I love your video. The sun will rise and we will try again, stay alive.
Wow man. Such a good video
You, my astute and eloquent friend, are something very very special.
Subbed with enthusiasm.
This is a magnificent piece of media.
I really really love your videos and I am really really happy you are part of the clique because they are my fav band. thank you for another sick AF video.
oh my god this notification got me so excited. i enjoy your videos so much i never would’ve expected you to cover my favorite song off my favorite band’s newest album.
This is a phenomenal video, thanks so much for making it! You put into words all of the things I was thinking and feeling about this song. You make a lot of great points that a lot of people miss when talking about their music. Now I wanna hear your thoughts on other twenty one pilots songs!
I also love how you analyze the music theory and drum beats as well! Josh's drumming is so intentional and it often gets overlooked.
Yessss the stressed out joke lmao
shoutout to you for making it work!!
OMG?? TØP ANALYSIS?? I am hyped
wow such a powerful and deep analysis of the song!! I wasn't able to pinpoint why it stucked so much with me but now I can, thank you!
Also, the bit about keep trying and starting fresh again, no matter how much time has passed the cycle of ups and downs is still there but the time have given more tools to face it... I think is the overarching theme of Clancy. The lyrics of Oldies Station come immediately to my mind, that "push on through" that is simply the evolution of the "stay alive"... because we have all grown in these 10 years and we stayed alive, but now we have to keep pushing through❤
I look forward to your next analyses, I have immediately subscribe after this one!!!
yes yes yessssssss! exactly! Great read on the theme of the album. It's like, what do these problems look like now with a decade's worth of tools and experiences? I love that you drew a line between "stay alive" to "push on through". Thanks for watching!
2:02 fun. MENTIONED IN 2024 LETS GOOOO YEAHHHH
YESSSSS fun. FANS UNITE
The use of truce at the end there, that killed me. It’s perfect.
I also like the idea that (keeping with the school metaphors) no matter how bad the grades you got in this semester were, everyone starts with 100s next semester. I’m not that big of a fan of Clancy as a whole, but this song was one of the great ones off it
I have been a fan since 2018, kinda stopped for a year from SAI (i LOVE it now), I know tyler had a lot of Christianity involved in his earlier work and its still present in his recent work but honestly, in 2018 I was 13 so i didnt really paid attention. I interpreted this song as a suicide attempt especially with "I remember the yellow dashes in the streets" as in, standing in the middle of the road waiting for a car to hit and then "i pray those lights would take me home" as in, the car lights ending him, another reason is the repeated "I dont wanna be here".
I'm 19 now, hearing the lyrics from a different perspective and observing them from a religious light makes me appreciate it even more. I am not christian, but tyler has always implemented religion in most of his songs where its asking for a higher power for some sort of relief instead of directly making it sound like it is about God. I think the way tyler writes music helps connect with a lot of people regardless of what he's is explicitly saying (I dont know if that makes sense).
I appreciate your review and I adore this song so much more now. Thank you!!!!
A tøp video from you!? Absolutely stunning babes✨
YESSS good to know there's at least one person in my audience that is a fan hahahaha
@@mediaprocessingchannel :)) and also, its so refreshing to see someone speak about how masterful the songs themselves are, and not just abt the lore. (which ofc is also wow)
I said it 11 months ago
I say it once more
This man is attractive
I liked this analysis. And completely agree with most of what you said and I appreciate the music chords and beats breakdown, too.
May I suggest you not swear as much so more people can have access to your channel. 😅
Real ones know you’ve been spitting 21p hot takes since 2014, except the medium was a booth in the Langley Denny’s at 3am on a Tuesday night over hashbrowns and bad coffee 🙏
😭😭😭 thank u my dear friend, this means the world ❤️❤️❤️
I COMMENT SO PEOPLE WATCH THIZ MORE WOW
NGL, it’s the one of the songs on Clancy that I skip, along with The Craving (Jenna’s version) 😢
no wayyyyyy what for! Just not ur vibe? Which ones hit most for you?
omg the subtitles redacted ritardando, I hope you didn't get demonetized
omg! Thanks for letting me know haha. This reminded me to get going on the manual captions for this video. They're uploaded now!
The anti-body Christian theology didn't exist until after the 15th century it was not in classical Christianity. The body is good, God came to us in a body. He is going to redirect our body at the end of time. Maybe your version of protestant Christianity was not enough, I had to leave protestantism too, but maybe you would find more meaning in classical Christianity.
yeah, it’s one of those things that feels like a product of Protestantism and Protestant work ethic, so I know it’s not representative of all Christian belief. I think there are ways to have a more liberating theology, but a lot of American Christianity I see doesn’t attempt to reckon with that. Post-deconstruction I can see a lot of the positives, so I love to see people who may be taking the good and running with it.
@@mediaprocessingchannel for sure. I know for me, I was on the verge of losing my faith until I found Catholicism. I also grew up in a Christian school and was surrounded by the culture and I found a lot of things that didn't make sense to me: evangelicalism culture just being white suburban culture, the hate if the body, the inconsistency of the reason to go to church, my ultimate purpose as a follower of Christ, and many other things. I found real answers to these questions in Catholicism and orthodoxy which have thriving communities in America, so if there is any part of you that is still wanting to be Christian then I think those may be helpful to look into. Great video! I'll listen to your new album when it comes out.
Wait, St Augustine was also very much not into the flesh. He was against lust and for living for the god, the afterlife, not for the life on earth, for the flesh.
Just to be clear I'm not Christian so I don't think this.
why is Christianity in the content warning?
It’s a sensitive topic for some! Also wanted to warn people that there’d be some potential criticism of it ahead too
how is that a question
excellent video...........
Oh my. This was so good. TOP speaks to my heart and has been there for my mental health journey and it is so validating knowing I’m not alone. Thank you so much for this thoughtful take. 🫶🏻
