Need for Speed Underground Need for Speed Underground 2 Need for Speed Carbon Need for Speed ProStreet Where are these? Are you okay? Did you smash your head on a wall or something? This is utter disrespect.
Any reason why you didn't mention NFS Underground? I feel like that was the first time a "drifting" mode was in a big franchise. It was also my introduction to drifting as well.
That's actually a valid point. I saved NFS for 2009, since shift upgraded drifting to a level that was infinitely satisfying. But I left 2004 open, could've put Underground 2 in, good point man, thanks.
@@ricer746 Yep i also belive that 2004 nfsu2 spiked the world with the drift events... Tons of nowadays players are in becuase of it. it was a must mention!
Interesting list and definitely a couple of games I hadn't heard of. I would have liked to have seen more information in how drifting was implemented in the game; powerslides, handbreak turns and clutch kicks (Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift Game 2006) and what impact that had on following games.
Considering what could be included in this list, there's quite a lot of omissions. Need for Speed Underground 1 & 2 are better examples of drift racing in the Need for Speed franchise (and yes, the series introduced drift racing in 2003, not 2004). If you were only going to include one game per franchise, you should of chosen the first Underground for this list instead of Shift. On the subject of rally games, DiRT 2 and especially DiRT 3 have incorporated drifting in their games as well, and it isn't merely an afterthought either. However, I will say I did catch interest in OverDrift Festival from watching this video. Although seeing as how user reviews have gone from very positive to mixed as of release, I am very skeptical about buying it right now. Perhaps I should look into it more before I make judgement.
You make good points, as many in the comments, but I can't squeeze too many games in a single year, because then it would be a never-ending video :D And yeah, Overdrift Festival has gone down, but the game is still very much being worked on, so if you buy it, the updates will hopefully solve the problems.. Especially considering, the developers actually listen to their fans, so I'm pretty hopeful
Does anyone remember NFS: Carbon? That greatly improved the Drift of Underground 1 & 2 bringing with it a new Drift mode that would be in the canyon in the style of Initial D (yes, you can use a Corolla GT-S Apex if they were wondering), Not to mention when you modify the game a bit or resort to mods like the Redux 22' that by pressing a key (in my case K) enables the Drift in conventional races and in free mode (not to mention added the BTD [Brake To Drift] for the handbrake on the Space key, something that improves the gameplay a lot)
idk if anyone is really into the driving mobile games, but recently i found a game called Static Shift Racing on the iOS App Store that i immediately fell in love with, it feels kinda like an old school Need For Speed game and it just recently released!
this is not a bad list at all. for 2006 im surprised that d1gp for the ps2 didn't make it despite reviews saying it was bad (they're not wrong lol) also wish project gotham racing made it on there bc that game rewarded you for making your car go sideways

another mention is the entirety of the battle gear/side by side series, its great fun, and the final game, battle gear 4 tuned has loads of tracks, and can be played on teknoparrot
So many important games that you skipped. - Shutokō Battle '94 Keichii Tsuchiya Drift King - SNES - Gran DORIFITO 2 - It was a very popular game for drifting in the PS1 era - Touge Max 2 and Touge Max G - PS1 - D1 Grand Prix - Project Torque > Drift City - R-Factor > LFS - TDU has the same impact than FH for drifting when was released
By the way, in 2010 you had nothing but Gran Turismo 5, the first GT with a solid online community dedicated only for drifting, with hundreds of cars and dozens of tracks. I was there.
oh is Xtreme Racing same to Kansei racing? I once used to play game called Kansei and it is allot like the one you shown as Xtreme Racing, esp the sounds of exhaust pops, those are unmistakable
3:08 It's not really an adaptation of Initial D since the franchise was developed before Initial D ever has a video game and still a manga. It might be influenced by Initial D later popularizing touge, but it has tributes to actual real life JP street racing history itself. The Tokyo Xtreme Racer actually started to simulate highway duel scene (inspired by Midnight Club of the 80-90s). TXR: Drift was actually the spin-off series specifically focusing on Touge. But fun fact, it's also a spiritual sequel to Wangan Dead Heat/Tokyo Highway Battle:Drift King, which is drift focused but still on highway back on the Sega Saturn and PlayStation (1996), way before Initial D shipped their first arcade cabinet game in 2002. 6:36 I have to disagree here. The main audience for these racing arcade cabs are obviously Japanese, and having a physical steering wheel and stick shift is the best way to play these games. Besides you still have the Initial D console games anyway. It'd have a more casual gameplay for controllers, and they have stopped making them. Initial D arcade cab series on the other hand, still has a new entry released in 2021. 7:23 The reason it was successful (and still is, in Japan) because it was the "Smash Bros." of Japanese racing franchises, similar to Project X Zone for fighting game publishers. It has many collabs, such as TAMIYA (Mini 4WD), Ridge Racer, D1GP (Japanese Drift IRL league), freakin IdolMaster anime (lol), but mainly two of the most popular JP racing franchise: Wangan Midnight (highway duel, Midnight Club) and Initial D (touge drifting). I heard it was also more like current gacha games, where you collect "rare special" cars from these franchises. 8:25 I don't know why you pointed out Peak Angle Online as specifically the MMO drift game, when Drift City was indeed an MMO too. It was made in the S. Korean MMO boom lol. 9:22 It's just 2 dollars so not really offensive. But I understand why people don't like it. It's very uninspired: the camera angle is clearly copying modern Need For Speed, the UI too from possibly NFS:Carbon. The game also visually looks too much like a Unity demo rather than a finished game.
