I am so glad that Germans, Brits, Americans and plenty of other nationality love keeping vintage machines alive just because these machines are cool AND historic!!

Great for your father. I have been doing my military duty at the 40sth squadron in BKOK. Still remembering the sound of this workhorse.

I've flown in September 1987 as a passenger with this particular helicopter at the Oldtimer-Airshow Hahnweide near Stuttgart/Germany. A fantastic experience! All the best for the pilot, Mr. Bernd Hauber and his S-58, also to Mr. Eddy Brokken!

This brings back a lot of memories for me. My dad was the first Sikorsky Crew Chief on the first one of these ever built. He did all the experimental tie down tests and was assigned to them for many years. He was sent to Bangkok Thailand as an adviser to the Thai Air Force on these from 1969-1971. he would lift me up into the left seat, the co-pilots seat, with the Thai pilots when they went through some of their starting procedures. Quite a thrill for a young kid.

What a fantastic way to honor your dad. At some point we will all see our lives flash before our eyes. It would be a shame if it's not worth watching. Your Father is a very lucky man. Nicely done.

Thanks so much for putting this on. I flew a 34-d in Vietnam with the US Marine Corps and later flew the S-55 (sort of like going even back more in time in civilian life in the Canadian Arctic. Kind of rough but I always felt it would get me home. Great memories and a great sound.

I was stationed in Fulda Germany with the 58th Engineers at Downs Barracks from 1960 to '63 and the H-34 pilots used to let me fly with them on border patrol if there were no brass going as long as I was in uniform.I have some pics of the east german border from the copter rides on the weekends when I was able to go.This is a great video and brings back memories of the old days.Ron G

If I was the pilot in the orange suit, I would had been delighted to have this fine man on board. "Do you want me to carry you, sir? " "No, I´m fine, I used to fly one of these years ago"..."ok, you take me then!" Awesome.

great Great GREAT video. It is wonderful to see you n your dad getting the chance to experience the S 58 again.
This video re kindles my memories to the time I took my late father back to Pearl Harbor 60 years to the day when he had the over night duty on the Tern - AM31 which was tied up across the end of 1010 pear, 2,000 feet across from the Arizona when she was destroyed along with over a 1,000 men's future........
    Again Thank You

Sound of the 50's and early 60's actually. The S-58 was made in 1955. Born in 1960, I only remember jets and turbines by the end of that decade.
Very cool video. Never heard of of these start but I've heard plenty of big 'round engines start up at the Reno Air Races. LOVE the sound.

Well, for me it’s the sound of the sixties.... :)
The S-58’s/ H34’s at the base where my dad was stationed arrived in the early 60’s and were replaced by the turbine Sea Kings in the mid 70’s...

My dad was a mechanic on, (i don't know what model) 60's tho', one time they had an oil pump go out on a cross country flight. they set down in a clearing in the woods, my dad had along his Lambretta motor scooter. he hops into the nearest town and calls the base to send out a new oil pump and the change it in the field and resume their flight. Got pics somewhere

For as cool as turbine engines are, and as much power they produce...they will never have the heart warming sound of a good, old fashioned radial engine. Starting a turbine sounds like strangling a cat...starting a radial is like waking up a lion.

The S-58 or H-34 Uh-34 is an early helicopter and is Sikorsky's last piston engine powered helicopter as most in Vietnam now have been reduced to scrap but were restorable. this still has the original wright R-1820-84 radial engine but then again in the 1970s these were converted to turbine power and have good lifting capacity. as this S-58 in piston engine form one of them someday may be aquired by Kermit Weeks in USA for his Fantisy of Flight collection in Polk city Florida. as he collects aircraft and helicopters up to the 1950s as the S-58 was made in the 50s some of them which is a larger version of the Sikorsky S-55 H-19 chickasaw.

there is some S-58s that remain in the world ferring passengers cherry tree drying, and other tasks it performs. as few remain with their wright cyclone 9 r-1820 9 cylinder radial engine 1525 horsepower. some in the 1970s were converted to turbine power using two P&W pt-6 turbine engines or twin pack. as this helicopter saw service in vietnam as many remain derlict or scrapped in vietnam. many airworthy s-58 H-34 choctaws remain airworthy mainly in the United States. either airworthy or on static displays in museums.

most H-34’s in the US and other military were retired in the early 1970’s..
Also , if you look at the early US space flights (Mercury in the early 60’s), the recovery of the capsule was done by H34’s

I loved the old Sikorskys, I remember watching them fly over the Hollywood house where I grew up. The The big radial-powered rotors made a "tokka-tokka" sound that felt powerful to a 5 year old boy living in the Hollywood hills in the 1950s

S-58's are not as rare as you think. Plenty of S-58's in the USA....especially the S-58t with the Pratt-Whitney PT-6 turbines...they are in DAILY use in the USA. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department flies an S-58 as Air5 on a DAILY BASIS.
I find it quite difficult to believe there is only ONE S-58 in ALL of Europe that is airworthy. These were produced until 1970. Perhaps you meant to say it is the last airworthy RADIAL POWERED S-58. I might believe that....

See? that´s the difference between us... i do my research before i write comments...S-58´s are out of service with the LA County Sheriff dep. since 1999 !! .... They have or had had H-3´s ( S-61´s which are totally different helicopters... ) which are being replaced by Super Pumas right now.... I know there are still S-58´s in service in the US , but not that many...especially not piston ones...
now, find me 1 article or picture of another S-58 still flying in Europe now...good luck
