I was a quite young when i met him with my father around 10 years old, my memory from then is not so good but i remember that night clear as day. I was the youngest person to yell a request. Well he played it then after the show invited My Mom Dad and myself backstage. Talked to me not like i was a child but a peer and with nothing but kindness. Dad got his guitar signed by john and it sits on the wall to this day. I miss him.
John Prine was one of the greatest singer/songwriter/storytellers of all time. Illegal Smile and Hello In There are a couple other John Prine classics. RIP John. 🙏✌️
One of the greatest losses to music was the death of John Prine to Covid. He was one of the best songwriters of my generation, and it breaks my heart that he is gone.
I'm glad you've been directed to John Prine. This is one of the most devastatingly beautiful and haunting songs that I've ever listened to. I was too young for Viet Nam, but in my brief college stint I hung out with Viet Nam vets my older brother's age, and to a man they would tear up when this song was played. I hope you'll spend a lot of time exploring Prine's catalogue. He has other profoundly beautiful and sad songs, and love songs, and songs that will make you smile or outright laugh out loud while singing along with him. I hope to enjoy watching you get to know him.
As much as I love john prime since I was 10, he died of throat cancer, not covid... and yes, I'm an unvaxed trump supporter who never wore a mask. Guess what, I dont get sick every three months. Actually, haven't been sick in years! Volunteered at the hospital and all covid patients recovered... yet all my social media was deleted for sharing my story.
The best songwriter/story teller of all time. I'm 35. My dad showed me John when I was a kid. Wasn't my thing then. Rediscovered in my early 20s. He's a legend
What a beautiful, sweet, humble and kind man. The greatest American storyteller to grace this world. One of a kind, we'll never see his likes again. the things this man overcame in his life, i still can't believe he's gone ~ I know he's out there smoking that 9 mile long cigarette. We miss you John ♡
John has a great sense of humor as well. Try Illegal Smile and Dear Abby. Seriously, the man has not written a bad song. Bonnie Raitt had a hit with Angel From Montgomery.
John Prine once said of this song, "I hope you hate hearing it as much as I hated writing it." Now that you've seen how John could make us all cry for so many years, you should listen to a much later version of John Prine and his duet with the talented Iris Dement at the 54th Street Sessions. The song is "In Spite of Ourselves" and I guarantee it will make you smile. Be sure and get the 54th Street Sessions because there is a story that goes with the song.
To me, the broken radio is a metaphor for a broken man, and "sweet songs don't last too long" means the good times are few and far between. "Little pitchers have big ears" is an old saying that means be careful what you say around the children, because the kids hear and understand more than you know. I think the song is sung from the point of view of Sam's children "There's a hole in Daddy's arm..." So this is more than the story of an old soldier in a downward spiral - it's also a story of the collateral damage to his family. Sad as sad can be.
I heard John Prine in the late 70's and couldn't' stop listening. When Henry Deutschendorf started his musical career he took John's name as a tribute to him and became John Denver! I saw Prine in concert, by himself on a high school stage in Denver Co. 1981 He's one of my favorites.
John Prine is a true artist, his words paint very vivid pictures in my mind. I love it when I meet fellow fans, it’s how I select my friend and acquaintances
There are to many perfectly written songs from John that you could go down a long road of music...BUT one of my favorites that I believe you would enjoy is "SOUVENIRS". But then again I'm just a nobody passing by in this wonderful world of music. RIP John Prine you shall forever be missed.
Saw him so many times through the years. A master wordsmith. Couldn't respect him any more. He has tons of lighthearted hilarious tunes too. Go get ya some Britt.
I was introduced to John Prine's music by my ex-husband. We declared "In Spite of Ourselves" to be our song, because it was so funny and fit so well with our personalities. In the end though, "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness" became our song, though it was never declared the way the first one was. It just happened. We parted ways, but John Prine will never not remind me of that time in my life.
John Prine was a genius when it came to story telling, another of his songs that will make you think is Hello in there, or for some Prine humor check out In spite of ourselves with John Prine and Iris Dement it's hilarious. RIP JOHN
Those vets came home to get spit in the face, those boys didn’t want to go yet our country doesn’t give a crap about them or any of the boys coming home from fighting for this great country, any Vietnam vets reading this welcome home soldier we love you, many years too late but welcome home.
A True American Legend who could put you right there in the moments of his songs. A much unknown, under appreciated singer/songwriter. I for one was years behind most by the time I found his music. It only took this song and a couple more to realize I had stumbled onto greatness. RIP John Prine
John Prine is just special and a master songwriter. He can make you cry, laugh and anything in between. I have been a John Prine fan since I heard him for the first time. May I suggest In Spite of Ourselves and Please Don't Bury Me... these songs are much lighter than this one. Thanks very much for this reaction!!
I have been performing John's songs for over 40 years, and I believe in his line about broken radios he was referring to Sam not being able to be the man to his family that he always wanted to be, thus he was the broken radio that could no longer produce the sweet songs he had dreamed of.
Thank-you. Not too many reactors cover JP. He wrote scores of great songs and they were frequently other people's stories and the stories of "average" folks. Unlike many, he did not have a big ego. He was actually a humble guy. So refreshing.
I saw John perform live more than any other entertainer in my life. This song brought tears every time I heard it. It is far from the only emotional song he wrote. “Hello in there” becomes more and more sad the older I get.
John Prine wrote some song songs that were sad, but he also wrote a bunch more that could make you smile. He starts a bunch of songs on the "John Prine Live" album with humorous anecdotes. He is considered the goat by a bunch of songwriters.
I first heard john prine in 1980 or 81 and I've been hooked ever since. This song is one the first three sons he sang at an open mic night at a little club in Chicago. There are so many great songs he has written. "Hello in There" and "Paradise", are the other 2 of that first open mic night, after playing there for awhile he got worried that the people would be tired of the songs so on the way there that night (on a bus I think) he wrote another of his classics, "Souvenirs" which has always moved me and shocked me at how he wrote it on a bus ride. After nearly 50 years, some bouts with cancer he passed in 2020 with Covid. A song that just happens to be the last one he recorded is one you should hear, "I remember everything." Enjoy
There are a lot of colloquialisms in here that I'm not sure if you got or not but you definitely got the idea of it and I'm so glad you got to experience the incredible John Prine. He died a while back but he left us with a ton of fantastic songs. As far as sweet songs not lasting long on broken radios, I've always just seen that as a metaphor for the whole story, where a local hero comes home but it doesn't take long before it turns into a tragic story given all the shit he had to deal with. Little pitchers have big ears, is an older expression that means children hear a lot more going on in their environment than we think they do. I think the saying originated from the idea that pitchers, especially old-fashioned ones, the handles kind of look like ears. When you guessed that the grass growing around his brain meant that he basically just kind of group fuzzy and foggy in his thoughts, that's half right but there is a double entendre there and of course grass is slang for weed. So he shot up lots of morphine and smoked a lot of weed. He has so many brilliant songs. He originally was a mailman with a walking route in Chicago and the rhythm of his feet moving along had him just creating songs in his head all day long. He has written some of the most beautiful and touching songs. Hello in there. It's about old people. Spanish Pipedream is really upbeat and really fun and I've played it countless times in a band that I was in for awhile and it always got the audience dancing and singing along. The list goes on and on. I met him a couple times and he is one of the nicest people and funniest people you will ever meet. He is sweet and endearing and compassionate and brilliant. Or he was. RIP buddy.
hi steve:) not surprised to find you in a john prine comment section lol yeah, i may have seen john live more than any other solo artist in my life i loved that man so much and was gutted to lose him during the pandemic after everything he had overcome to that point what a poet, what a storyteller he was a blessing!
In my humble opinion he Was the best of the best! When😢he😢passed away from Covid I cried like a baby! It was like losing family! Please do more of his songs!
Hello Britt....John Prine, in my humble opinion, was the best lyricist......ever. If you listen to everything he wrote over the many years he performed.....I don't think anyone has done better. It will take you a fair amount of time to cover all of his work, but you will be a faithful lover of everything....John Prine. RIP Sweet John RIP
He was from Chicago and was a big part of the folk scene there. Another great story teller from Chicago who died young was Steve Goodman, you should check him out, Britt.
I had to subscribe just to give you credit for reacting to John Prine I first saw John Prine and the early seventies Jerry Jeff Walker didn't show up for his death if John had to play the whole night in a small College sitting with his storytelling, guitar in my high school sweetheart I continue to follow his career through his entire life is fighting cancer and making that come back after that you need to check out many phases of his career or maybe even a documentary about him I've seen that somewhere very very enjoyable thanks and I hope you continue down this rabbit hole
John Prine is one of many beautiful singer/ song writers. A few others are John Denver, Jim Croce, James Taylor and Carol King. You should check out some of their music.
I came for John Prine but I’m staying for you. You are a lovely, thoughtful young lady. The way you really listen to the music and lyrics of all different genres is very refreshing. Watching your reactions is like having a conversation with a friend…thank you for that. Peace to you as well. ❤️🔥
Since you like songs that tell a story, you are very lucky to have found John Prine, one of the great American songwriters of any generation. Though his prolific career spanned 50 years, I always hear the same 4-5 songs on all the reaction channels. I recommend a few less frequently played gems: "Far from Me", "Spanish Pipedream", "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness ", "All the Best", "Unwed Fathers", "Summer's End", "Donald and Lydia" and "Long Monday".
I only "found" John after he died from covid. He had survived at least 2 bouts of cancer, one being throat cancer. He thought he'd never sing again, but he proved himself wrong. I'm 67 years old and the song that I heard first was "hello in there" and not ashamed to say I cried. He has so many great songs with stories. I love Summers end, and angel from montgomery. From his last album, released posthumously, try I remember everything. For a laugh, listen to John with the wonderful Iris de Ment singing in spite of ourselves. Just too many to mention.
Same age, same story. What a find! My husband and I just heard 'Let's Talk Dirty in Hawaiian' on Pandora John Prine Radio this evening . Laugh out loud funny!!
John Prine has the soul of a poet. The world needs more people like him. He can really paint a picture, can't he? This song reminds me of a Johnny Cash song - "The Ballad of Ira Hayes". As with a lot of Cash songs, it carries a powerful message. I hope Oliver Anthony can, in some measure, carry on the truth-telling tradition that Prine was so great at. We need to hear sad stories, so we can be thankful and choose a better path.
I've recently discovered your channel and am loving your reactions. I'm so glad you discovered the talented Mr. Prine. Bob Dylan called him God's favorite song writer.I hope you listen to more of his work. 1
One of the greatrst songwriters ever. You would really love (and may even cry to) Hello In There, a song about lonely and somewhat abandoned old people.
John was lost to covid recently RIP. He had such a way with words, his song writing is hard to match. I suggest listening to Souvenirs. A modern song writer and story teller that I put up there by John would be Jason Isbell. May I suggest listening to Elephant if you want a story that will affect your day. Keep up the great work Brit
John loved Jason and his wife, Amanda Shires. Jason's tune "If We Were Vampires" feels like something John could have written when he was younger. And I definitely think Amanda's song "Wasn't I Paying Attention?" would be a great reaction video - it's dark but plumbs some of the same emotional depths that "Sam Stone" does. Another great tune from John Prine is "Lake Marie" - but his entire catalog is a worth listen.
My father came back from the South Pacific after WWII with what they called back then Battle Fatigue. (PTSD) He suffered from it the rest of his short life. He died at 41 from cancer. I know the feeling of being a kid at school when the other kids recognize the clothes you're wearing as the old ones their parents donated to the church. I still loved him though. He couldn't help it. The last thing he told my Mom was to never let me or my brother go in the service. I went to jail for refusing to go to Viet Nam and I'm proud of it.
Glad you've found John Prine, one of the great songwriters of the last sixty years. I first head this song on US forces radio in the early seventies, went straight up to Glasgow (Scotland) to try and buy his LP but the record store had never heard of him. Got it eventually and haven't stopped playing it since. RIP JP❤
One of his songs that was one of my all time favorites was"'Take me back to Muhlenberg County" A beautiful song about going back to a childhood place that he loved in Coal mining country in Ky. He was such a great Talented performer that never got as much recognition as he deserved!
Nice reaction Britt to the one and only John Prine. If you want to see his other side (his humor) try :"IN Spite of Ourselves" or ANY other of his songs. I can tell you he never wrote a bad song and lots of people will attest to that. I cried like a baby when he passed. Such a beautiful soul and a decent person. R.I.P. John.
John Prine was a GREAT storyteller. This song is so sad, as is "Angel From Montgomery", Some of his songs are sardonically funny, like "Illegal Smile", and "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore". I miss the old boy!
John Prine is all about storytelling. He started as "The Singing Mailman" in suburban Chicago in the mid '70's. "You're Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Any More" still fits American life, sadly. One of my favorites "Grandpa was a Carpenter" will sure make you smile
Not sure if you check these comments, but one the best tributes to John was Brandi Carlisle’s performance of Hello In There on the Colbert show the day John died. What a tragic loss.
I first heard Sam Stone in high school in 1972 when my teacher brought in John's first album… The song we're still named "Great Society Conflict Veteran's Blues" back then... The line 'there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes' really stuck with me because I knew a few people like that at the time
His last song was recorded in his living room, shortly before he died, "I Remember Everything" it's a fitting summation to 50 years of amazingly, beautiful stories.
Quite the experience, I am glad you got to have it with your family.
John Prine was one of the greatest singer/songwriter/storytellers of all time. Illegal Smile and Hello In There are a couple other John Prine classics. RIP John. 🙏✌️
Yes DD! 2 great tunes that I haven't heard in awhile... Gonna go play them both right now!!!
better than Dylan even
I love both of those. But Lake Marie ... that is a storytellers song to beat all storytellers songs.
@@olliehays3206 Arguably better with that type of uniquely American metaphysical lyrical irony, but Dylan has more strings to his bow.
Lake maria

I cried that day
He died from complications related to covid, let’s be clear. He didn’t die from covid.
I still cry

Prine said first time he played it in a coffee house in Chicago no one clapped or laughed or anything and he thought they really hated it.
Mexican Home is the one that rips my chest open everytime.

One of the greatest songwriter to ever grace this earth with his presence...
R.I.P. John Prine. An American Troubadour. Covid killed him, but his music will live forever.
He has a incredible catalog of music
The best songwriter/story teller of all time. I'm 35. My dad showed me John when I was a kid. Wasn't my thing then. Rediscovered in my early 20s. He's a legend

My husband and I just heard 'Let's Talk Dirty
in Hawaiian' on Pandora John Prine Radio this evening .
John Prine is an American Treasure! Try “Hello in There”
I've recently discovered your channel and am loving your reactions.
One of the best songwriters of all time. Try Souvenirs. My favorite
‘When I get to heaven’ is a great one. I always picture it and it’s fun to imagine.
RIP JP❤
John Prine is one of the great American songwriters from any era.
One of his songs that was one of my all time favorites was"'Take me back to Muhlenberg County" A beautiful song about going back to a childhood place that he loved in Coal mining country in Ky. He was such a great Talented performer that never got as much recognition as he deserved!
RIP john Prine, we lost such s national treasure when he passed
Nice reaction Britt to the one and only John Prine. If you want to see his other side (his humor) try :"IN Spite of Ourselves" or ANY other of his songs. I can tell you he never wrote a bad song and lots of people will attest to that. I cried like a baby when he passed. Such a beautiful soul and a decent person. R.I.P. John.
Hello in There ❤ John Prine
John Prine was a GREAT storyteller. This song is so sad, as is "Angel From Montgomery", Some of his songs are sardonically funny, like "Illegal Smile", and "Your Flag Decal Won't Get You Into Heaven Anymore". I miss the old boy!
John Prine and Bob Dylan ...2 artists you should listen to more......
one of my favorite performers .genius "hello in there" , "illegal smile "
The architect who made the Wall intended it to be just like that: a reflective scar in the earth that reflects your face to you.
I pray you react to *“In Spite Of Ourselves” by John Prine & Iris DeMent live*
I love this song. It is funny and beautiful and reminds me of my wife and our 45 years together.
ThIs guy is one of our best lyricists ever.
Lord I so miss John Prine
John wrote many of his wonderful songs while still in his 20s. RIP John.
The line 'there's a hole in daddy's arm where all the money goes' really stuck with me because I knew a few people like that at the time
Britt, this man is a most talented and respected songwriter. He’s also funny! I adore him!
His last song was recorded in his living room, shortly before he died, "I Remember Everything" it's a fitting summation to 50 years of amazingly, beautiful stories.
And it makes me so sad because it showed he still had a lot to give us.
The song that made John Prine famous
Summers end tells a story It’s one of the saddest songs you will ever hear Haave some towels ready.
