Freddy was a Texas Treasure. He was in the band called the Texas Tornados. They have a lot of great songs in their catalog. "Laredo Rose", "If That's What You're Thinking", "Who Where You Thinking Of", "Anybody Going to San Antone", "Menocino", "ay te dejo en san antonio", and "(Hey Baby) Que Paso" are a few. One of the members is Flaco Jiménez, he plays the accordian. He plays with Dwight Yoakum some.

I remember driving to work one morning in the '70s and hearing this song on country radio for the first time -- and I was shook. My actual thought was, "That's either the best song or the worst song I've ever heard." After hearing it a few times, I decided I truly loved it. And I still love it today. Freddy Fender's voice can cut right through your heart.

He is Freddy Fender, a native of San Benito, TX. His real name was Baldemar Huerta. Being Latino in music wasn’t uncommon in those days, but many changed their names to more white sounding names. So he chose Freddy and the surname Fender after this Fender guitar. Another Latino artist of the time was Ritchie Valens who was born Richard Valenzuela.

You have dove down a very deep rabbit hole here. Mr. Freddie Fender has many many fantastic songs. He was also in a couple of groups. "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" is another great solo. I think you would really like " Who Were You Thinking Of" by the Texas Tornados with Freddie as the lead singers is one you will find amusing. Freddie was born in Texas, but referred to himself as a Tex-Mex. I always loved his voice.

This song has always been special to me... My father used to sing (Cover and Imitate) it when I was a kid, and he used to bring me to jam sessions with (Literally Dozens) of his musician buddies would all take turns on stage, backing each other up, and just having fun in general... They were held either in local venues, or even in peoples back yards... Brings back lots of memories... I remember many times when my father would get called up to sing this song, everyone would jump out their chairs and onto the dance floor, and if you weren't fast enough, and there was not enough partners available, you might have ended up either sitting it out or dancing by yourself... Very often my father was the ONLY one, out of dozens of musicians that could empty the seats and fill the dance floors... He sang many songs, but this was the song my father was known for...
My father never got to meet Freddy... The only big star he ever met was Mel Tillis... They took a Polaroid picture together, shaking hands, and Mel signed it for him.... My father kept that Polaroid taped on the dash of his truck for YEARS, until it literally disintegrated to pieces.. I can't imagine what my father would have done with an autographed picture with "Uncle Freddy".. Probably would have had it blown up and hung it in the living room...

I got my first listen to Freddy every Saturday night my best friend and his Dad would load up motorcycles in the van ( 2 seats w/ a folding chair in between for the 3rd seat that at acceleration would tip over backwards). Heading to the flat track races. My friends Dad while driving would ask for a Coors out of cooler then pop in Freddy in the 8 track player and we would sing this song for the 1.5 hr drive. Some of my favor memories as a child.

I hate to make this a “cliche” but HE was born in SAN BENITO TEXAS. He was born June 4, 1937 and left us on Oct 14, 2006 @ age 69 in Corpus Christi (SELENA’s City). There is a WATER TOWER , dedicated to him in His Honor on June 2005. The tower has his Image & his name on it. If you drive in Texas in the DEEP SOUTH Tip of TEXAS (called The Rio Grande Valley) in route on US HIGHWAY 83 (east to west), NOW called INTERSTATE 2 you will see the tower. Fender became famous with this particular song, a crossover, which earned him more national breakthrough & recognition in 1975. He later paired up with other famous singers such as Doug Sahm, Famous Flaco Jimenez & Augie Meyers and the band was named Texas Tornadoes. They were considered a Conjunto, Tejano, R&B, Country and Blues Band. He joined other famous bands as well in the following yrs. FENDER Also was given a Star on Hollywoods Walk of Fame in 1999. He also received many many other awards. HE HAS MANY OTHER HITS too.
