This was the greatest performance Joan ever gave and let me tell you why. Joan was born to play "Mildred Pierce" she literally walks through the role she is Mildred. In "Possessed" however she plays a character that Joan Crawford the woman could never identify with. Joan would have been devastated if a man ever left her, remember she ended all her relationships Alfred Steele died he didn't walk out on her and she was in total control of all his funeral arraignments right down to who would ride in which car and in what order. Critics are often wrong an example is "Rain" it was a flop in 1932 today its regarded as a classic. The same with "Daisy Kenyon" and "Johhny Guitar" another highly regarded movie and is consistently in the top 10 westerns of all time. "Possessed" is by far her best performance.
I love having joan crawfords rain movie on as background noise when I'm on the nod after having a hit of smack, I really feel like I'm there, like I'm her.
I now know why the interior of my great grandmother's house was so elegant..... She had a chandelier like that but smaller above her dining room table. And those curtains..... Very similar huge thick insane drapes. She was mimicking the movies.
