I've been using action cameras extensively for about 8 years now and in my personal experience these cheaper cameras are not really worth the money if you intend on using them on a regular basis for long periods of time. I've owned 11 different cameras made by Akaso/Eken/SKJ Cam/DJI/Yi/Hawkeye and every single one of them has died in under a year, i'm pretty sure for heat related issues, except for my Yi 4k and DJI Osmo Action. Both of those still work flawlessly. I use them for filming my freight hopping videos and they will get used sometimes 8-10 hours straight andtake it like a champ. I completely understand that how I use them is sort of a "worst case scenario" in terms of testing it's endurance but personally i'd rather pay $400 for a camera once and use it for several years or more, than pay $150 every year to replace a cheap camera.
It’s worth mentioning that GoPro isn’t worth it either though. They may be the standard but they set it extremely low. DJi has, in my personal opinion, taken the spot for what the standard should really be.
@@casey360360 I find Insta360 to have the better image quality. You're absolutely right, for the money, gopro needs to offer better hardware. Failing cameras and lost footage is a common complain with gopros.
@casey360360 Gopro is trash and pricey. Always overheating... they are known for that. I can't even trade in my old GoPro Session 4 because it's so outdated. So much for catering towards consumers, lmao. Mind you, I always had trouble functioning this camera as it lags or doesn't respond on the app.
I have to agree with the game changing image stabilization and quality of sensors. Ultimately, whether you buy a budget camera or an expensive one, will you have usable footage at the end that isn't a headache to watch? Not to say you can't obtain good footage with a budget camera. But having used older GoPros, china knockoffs and now an Insta360 X2, I can tell you that with all my previous cameras I would be lucky to get a few good shots out of them. Whereas with the X2 damn near EVERY shot is not only usable but looks amazing by comparison. For example, friends and family would normally get bored pretty quickly watching my older, shaky GoPro footage even if the content was interesting. But with the X2, they're amazed at how stable and "cinematic" the footage looks, often asking me who was shooting the video or whether I had a drone or gimbal setup. It's not cheap but the price difference is completely worth it for this one aspect alone in my opinion.
That brings up a whole conversation too. The meta of content consumers. Consumers won’t watch anything that has poor audio and footage with a non-cinematic feel. The days of true armature content creation is pretty well gone. Buying an inactivated cell phone to record with is better than most if not all of the sub $100 action cameras on UA-cam.
@@casey360360If you wouldn't mind, could you throw out 2 or 3 examples of the phones you're talking about? I have a Brave 7 which was about 200 Canadian and I'm liking it for what it does. They improved the stabilization a bit and the night time filming. In fact I'm doing night time tests on it right now in very torturous conditions with a pitch black side of the street and lights on the other side going into a pitch black trail with zero lights but my headlight. They've added a "Night" mode which I'm pretty sure just limits the ISO to 1600 max as recommended on the Go pro. They only thing is with heavy duty bumps at almost pitch black the stabilization has a hard time keeping up with such little light to deal with. Ironically, it seems to do better when there is no light pollution on the pitch black trail with just my 3000 lumen wide angle light bar on high(it's way to crazy for the street). I'm assuming it has enough light in the shot to stabilize properly at that point. What I might do is go down to 2K 60 FPS and see if the camera has more to work with at night. The thing has like 50 settings so I'm sure if I fool around with it long enough to get some good night time riding footage. My bike only has front suspension so that doesn't help. In the day it's great, which is pretty much almost any camera as it has the light to work with.

Agree that there are far too many models and the specs overlap too much. You really need to check out what sensor is used. The EK7000 all have a 1060P sensor as do most of the V50s.
