Some people don't like squeaky catch she uses in this song, but I think part of Sia's genius is emotional expression, and that catch and the vocal fry express both desperation and determination. It's probably my favourite Sia song.
The advice that Adele gave Sia was to do with performing at a concert and sometimes if you can't hit the high note or need to rest your voice for a bit, you turn the microphone to the crowd so they sing it instead. I think with Adele it's more about 1. Her pen game - she writes amazing songs that resonate with many people. 2. Her emoting. You FEEL what she is singing I don't think anyone is objectively saying she's a powerhouse singer, or comparing her vocal ability to Whitney, Celine or Aretha etc...

Sia is from Adelaide,my home town! At one time she had stage fright so she sang facing the opposite direction away from the audience!

I love her voice squeaks. It's one of my favorite things about her voice. Her new song "Immortal Queen" has some of her best squeaks.
