    Nice video.
    I moved to England from Northern Ireland aged 5 in the 1960s. We returned for short trips twice a year for many years always on the Larne Stranraer ferry. Although only a short 2 hour crossing I remember fondly having a cabin many many times. Happy times.
    That cabin at only £20 was pretty cheap.

    They should REALLY consider building a rail bridge/car bridge from Belfast to Scotland

    • @fetchstixRHD
      @fetchstixRHD 7 років тому

      A rail bridge/tunnel wouldn't be as useful as the Channel Tunnel is (considering that the railways on either side use different gauges). As for a road bridge/tunnel, I guess it depends on how long it would be...

      There just isn't enough traffic on the Scotland to Ireland crossing to make a bridge or tunnel economically viable. Won't happen.

    Remember now (in 2022), there is no longer from any NI Railways (T-NIR) or indeed from any Irish Rail (IE) stations, thru rail/sea ferry/rail travel tickets. Eg Derry to Glasgow or Galway to London. Only now, thru Irish Port (sea ferry/GB Rail tickets) eg Rosslare Port to Swansea or Belfast Port to Glasgow, exist. For internal T-NIR or IE rail travel, one now has to book that portion, separately (going either way).

    from Canada:
    Q: at 2:52 you show the passengers disembarking by minibus. I was not sure on seeing this if the minibus actually boarded the ferry to load the passengers on it, or if they disembark on a wharf with the minibus extremely clos to the side of the wharf?
    In Maritime Canada, (at least before the construction of the confederation bridge between New Brunswick, across the straits of Northumberland to close to Camp Borden, P.E.I, some of the ferries were/are capable of handling the direct boarding of railway trains for the crossing af about 30 miles or so.
    This is accomplished by the use of special boarding antries. the train would approach that ans simply continue onto the boat when it was appropriately docked.
    What boata were used for this I am not sure and it would likely change seasonally. In the summer, my wife and I returning by car from a vacation sortie, were able to board the Abegweit ("ABBEY-weight") icebreaker for the trip. during the summer it was used to assistwith the toureist season, but in the winter thus ship was used to break ocean ice for the shipping, likely in the vicinity of Charlottetown Harbour, (that is also a naval base). When standing on the deck of that you are about 80 feet above water level, and the fuel cost for a single crossing was about $20,000 CAD at the time. these boats have a hull kin to the thickness and strencth of a battleship in order to be force driven over top of the ice and break the ice by their sheer weight and force!
    We believe the ship got its name from the Micmac frst nation tribe who inhabit the area along with everybody else to this day.

    Comparing and Contrasting the Cities of London and Belfast
    The Cities of London and Belfast have some similarities and differences unique. We can compare the cities respectively as capital cities of their respective countries. They are also similar because they are major cities in the United Kingdom. In retrospect, this paper will portend the contrast between the two cities in terms of education, scenery, and living standards.
    London is revered as one of the most attractive cities globally, which means it is a destination for most across the world. This attraction means that the living standards in London are higher compared to Belfast. London has the most institutions of higher learning as compared to Belfast as it boasts the like of Oxford University, one of the most revered institutions globally. In terms of housing, London has more expensive tenancy rates than Belfast. However, due to the population in London, industrialization is high, increasing the rates of pollution compared to Belfast.
    In conclusion, living in London is better than living in Belfast. Apart from the high standards of living and higher pollution rates, London fulfills your educational goals, and with the scenery, it is never a dull moment in London.

    Why does the minibus go to Hamilton Square instead of directly to Lime Street? If you're paying for a shuttle to the main station, it doesn't seem logical for it to leave you at a light rail station from where you will need to connect there first. Why doesn't it go all the way? Sorry, I've never been in Liverpool, is Lime Street very far from the ferry docks?

    Don’t really understand why you would travel this way, unless you have a real fear of flying?
    Flying is much quicker, just over an hour if I remember correctly from Gatwick to Belfast international, then an £8 bus ride to the city bus station.
    Ferry looks nice, but all that getting on and off buses and trains surely make this journey rather tedious.
    Good informative video though, but I just don’t get the reason for going on the ferry unless you are not far from the ports or are taking a vehicle on board.
    I live on the south coast of England and took my wife to Belfast for a long weekend birthday treat (we absolutely loved Belfast by the way). Tavel time was pretty short and we made the most of out time there, rather than all that travelling.
    What are your reasons please?

    • @seat61
      @seat61  4 роки тому +12

      This is the way everyone travelled, back in the 1930s, 1950s... Why should we HAVE to switch to an airliner, 5 hours of train, bus, airport, flight, airport, bus - missing out on a real and great JOURNEY and also 5 times the CO2 emissions? We all need to avoid unnecessary flights these days. This one is easily avoidable!

    • @montyzumazoom1337
      @montyzumazoom1337 4 роки тому

      Don’t start me off on co2 emissions..... if you enjoyed the journey that’s fine but it’s no use comparing it to the 1930’s and 50’s.
      If you have the time and perhaps a fear of flying then that’s a different story altogether.
      But for me a long weekend trip to Belfast to give my wife a Birthday treat was well worth the short flight. It mean that we spent more time in and around the city, which we enjoyed very much.
      Each to their own, but thanks for posting the video, I did find it interesting, and the ferry looked nice.

      jamestoni Me too. Too much stress plus it’s not like there’s a stop over in each location either. Seems like a waste and no doubt an expensive one at that!

    Unfortunately, we no longer have "quality" rail services in this country. People who used to pulled on their uniform & it was written into their contract, they WERE there, to meet the needs of the service. I am a big fan of Billy Fury, Cilla Black, The Searchers but have never wished to go to a sectarian, dive like Liverpool. I reside 8 miles North, North East of Glasgow, and have Glasgow if I wish that sort of thing.

      We do indeed have quality services, in both Northern Ireland and Great Britain. But we don;t like to admit it...

      I thought they said 'stay' in Scotland rather than reside. You should try a visit to Liverpool, I think you might be pleasantly surprised
