Because traditionally farmers have been selecting seeds based on the taste. Unfortunately in the past 30 years Turkey started using American seeds and we are losing our heirloom variety produce. Technology is great but technology can't give you sun ripened, tasty tomatoes.

OMG!! we really miss the wonderful array of Fruit and Veg in Turkey! However things are quite expensive for the Locals We are back living in Scotland now and keep saying how expensive and poor quality some things are. Always shrouded in horrible plastic as well!! This is a once-in-a-week district bazaar where you can get cheap and fresh greens and fruits. I am not even talking about the flavor, it's priceless. Thank you for bringing it to us, Mr. Scarsbrook. One of my favorites is apricot, it's different than the dry one you used to consume. It's "igdir Apricot", bigger than a large egg and juicy as a melon. Since it's tender, not inadequate to dry or export.
They cannot get cheaper it is not that easy. All the agricultural materials and pesticides are coming from Bayer an foreign companies. We pay a lot for fuel too. We have the most expensive fuel in Europe. Hearns are so poor and has no money. 98 of hearns have charges. you cant say it like that.

I am afraid, the ordinary Turks are not as happy about these "ridiculously low" prices as tourists, who are coming with euros, pounds and dollars amid the falling lira...
Turkish people do not earn much, even those prices high for us..lowest legal salary is around 250 pounds and you can imagine how those prices high for us. We do not make 2000 pound per month
@S A around 300-400 pounds per month in places like Fethiye. ın some big cities your salary can be 400-500 pounds. As you can imagine that is not a big money to live on, especially in big cities. If u are retired from Europe, you can be heaven with your pension in Turkey. 2000 pounds is a very huge money and you can afford lots of this things.
Now since I became a vegetarian I should move back to Turkey. Vegie and fruit prices are very high in Australia and that's the one from the supermarkets. Organic ones are horrendous pricey. I remember when I lived in Adana in the 60th a loaf of Turkish bread was 25 Kurus and a bottle red or white wine was 5 Lira. Since then I lived in 5 different countries, but I have nowhere seen fruits and vegetables as beautiful and tasty as in Turkey.

@E. man Yes, the rural areas (villages) have an amazing variety. They have really tasty fruits, veggies and eggs there. Can you imagine eggs and chicken that you can actually enjoy without seasoning? Cucumbers, peppers, grapes etc that *snap* when you bite into them.
Going to the local market is definitely one of my favorite things to do when in Turkey. Outside of the big centers, be aware that not every day is a market day, and the days vary from one town to the other as the same producers/sellers go from one town to the next on different days.

when comparing the prices, consider the monthly income in the UK and in Turkey which is something like 350 pounds for most people mate. Earn in The UK and spend it in Turkey which is the only thing that makes sense. Otherwise, what you call as cheap doesnt make much sense at all.
Yes, we find the vegetables in Turkey big markets to be ripe, unlike the kind we get here in Italy, picked before ripe and sequestered in carbon dioxide to get color! The taste is wonderful, like I tasted 65 years ago in America. Turkish people eat well. For a lot less.

that's it, my 4th visit to Turkey, I will spend more time in Fethiye, Dalyan & Antalya to cook from fresh produce. I spend 23 days last June & July, but only 2 nights in Fethiye, because I was traveling all over Turkey + Rhodes. No mater which city I was in, for breakfast, there's always tomatoes, cucumber, black olives, bread, jam + eggs. My Gulet/yacht group all admitted that we will never gonna eat cucumber + tomatoes for breakfast once we leave Turkey :) I love the BORECK- crispy phyllo envelope with spinach +cheese
Now living in the US after living in Turkey, there are 2 things to highlight. 1- the prices of fruits and vegetables in the US are incredibly high. 2- although prices being a few times higher, the produce looks and tastes like as if it was printed in a machine.

I visited turkey a year before the pandemic. Got the chance to visit sunday open market in Alacati. Even then the price can be ridiculously cheap it was like heaven. All types of fresh fruits and vegetables I feel like buying them all. Im not coming from rich country mind u, so I think most ppl will find turkey not that expensive. This maKes me want to come back :(

Now living in the US after living in Turkey, there are 2 things to highlight. 1- the prices of fruits and vegetables in the US are incredibly high. 2- although prices being a few times higher, the produce looks and tastes like as if it was printed in a machine.
You got it right. Most fresh stuff comes from Mexico, Canada...all dipped in food grade wax to prevent them going bad

You are lucky that you living in fethiye, prices in Istanbul are nearly the tripple of these. I should probably move to fethiye :)
I visited turkey a year before the pandemic. Got the chance to visit sunday open market in Alacati. Even then the price can be ridiculously cheap it was like heaven. All types of fresh fruits and vegetables I feel like buying them all. Im not coming from rich country mind u, so I think most ppl will find turkey not that expensive.
